'"It's on for Brussels"- a confirmation that Coe & Ovett would meet in the 4th IAAF Golden Mile. Ovett had directly confirmed this to the press when running the Mile in Oslo. Now, he suddenly found an alternative appointment, running in a minor international match for England in Norway. Ten years later he (Ovett) says the decision was Norman's; Norman maintains it was Ovett's.' P.98 Born to Run; to which Ovett wrote the forward and was contributor to.
"I'd expected Ovett to run in Brussels. I'd always planned to be there, and he was committed to it too. Two nights before, I'd been sitting in the office of the Sheffield Morning Telegraph, with Alan Hubbard, when an agency story came up on the wire that he wasn't running. Wilf Meert, the promoter, would say Ovett had agreed to run, but Norman arranged this fixture in northern Norway," S. Coe, P.100. Looking in Ovett's bio there is no mention of Brussels. Butcher's book concurs he pulled out.
We may not agree on things and I respect your right to your views and opinions, but I don't lie or make stuff up. Whether or not it was exactly 3 days before (I did originally say "about 3 days") Brussels, it is a fact Ovett was due to run &pulled out late in the season. I know Ovett ran his WR in Koblenz 2 days before, his decision to not run in Brussels came before this. I was making the point that had he run, both would have been pushed to run much faster than the actual times that they run.
if he hadn't hit the curb he could have been 3.46 , amazing run. wish ovett had been there, if they had run more often together i reckon they would be close to elgs times. gotta think ovett was capable of 3.45 and im sure coe could have done 3.44
coe ill accept of a fast pace had the sprinting edge on ovett and at that speed Coe would have probably won. if only we could have had cram 85 against ovett and coe 81 then elgs record would be close. great nights these were, look at the crowds.
I agree with you. I'm not sure hitting the curb lost him much time, but he wasn't giving his all on the last lap. He says in his book that he was "surging" over the last lap; picking up the pace a little, then laying off, like he did in training. He believes had he gone all out for the record at the bell, rather than treat it as a race as Boit was still there (hold something back til last 100) hed have run 3:46.5 that night. He certainly wasn't tired at all at the end.
Good run given pretty dire pacemaking. First lap too fast, next 2 too slow. Ovett was down to run in this, but pulled out about 3 days before to run a pointless 1000m in a 2nd rate Norwegian meet. If he'd run I think the world record would have been blown to smithereens.
That's not true. Ovett set his record on August 26th. This attack on the record by Coe was on August 28th. It would not have been smart for Ovett to try and run another record pace just two days after setting his latest mark. Look at the info for this race at the upper right. If if were the other way around, you'd tell us Coe was busy fighting cannibals in the Congo and couldn't make it to the meet.
Have you read "A Perfect Distance" by Pat Butcher or David Miller's "Born to Run" (Coe's biography). Both were athletic editors of British national newspapers at the time. You might find out a few new things about what was going on behind the scenes at the time. It was widely reported throughout the summer of 81 that Coe & Ovett were both down to run the Golden Mile in Brussels on Aug 28th. If you read AW then as a 9 year old then you'd have seen it mentioned several times.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to set up a profile with wrong age, etc!? I've got nothing to hide, have you? Think I might have been chatting to you elsewhere this past week. Oh well, each to their own. See the apology for calling me a liar is forthcoming! I did make one mistake. It wasn't a 1000m but an 800m in a place called Ardal on 29th August. Time 1:47.0. Milerman just being very reasonable. I have all these races myself too, but have no idea how to upload them on here.
Only a clown puts their real info up on sites like this with all the mud slinging going on. Too many psychos will start emailing you when you tick them off. I do go to sherdog, the MMA site. If you go there, we may have been posting at the same time, but I do have my real name over there. If you want to post your videos, convert them first. I apologized to Milerman, I don't want to miss out on any more vids. Someone else had a good collection here but then pulled them.

What makes you think I'd put my real info up on Youtube mate? ; ) We can argue after Milerman cools off. I want him to keep posting vids!
