  • Ah shit!! we see perfectly that the huys are threatening the elephant with their sticks... The elephant is not at all interested by this stupid activuty they force him to make... pathetic...

And more pathetic are people who laugh.

  • yeah, with a trainer in the front and a stick, then he can paint, so please stop the abuse, no matter where it is, in a zoo, or in this asian camps.

  • I love elephants; that's why I have to advise everyone to NOT go to Six Flags. They have a long, sad history of elephant neglect and abuse. Many have died prematurely because Six Flags was too greedy to pay for proper care. Don't take my word for it; this info is easy to find online with just a few minute's search. Please go instead to REAL animal sanctuaries where they don't make the animals perform silly tricks. Teach your kids to show respect and compassion towards animals, not domination.

  • Rolf Harriss paints much better

  • Personally I'd rather see them playing happily together and behaving normally, like elephants, rather than doing silly, unnatural tricks for tourists. Yes, they're incredibly smart-- anyone with eyes knows this. They don't need to prove it daily by doing tricks. Don't support these kind of shows; instead demand that zoos let their animals behave naturally, as they should.

  • this one looks like it doesn't want to paint :[

  • This is probably an elephant that was just given color and a canvas to paint on. Without proper teaching (sounds stupid right? I know, but it's true) it won't learn, it's the same with a person whose just starting out, but still these animals are more inteligent than people (it's been proven) and they obviously know what there doing, and if they didn't want to do it, than they wouldn't.

  • lightshadow22 : "these animals are more inteligent (sic) than people (it's been proven)"

This kind of statement makes me despair.

I might accept that the elephant is more intelligent than... well, no, let's not get personal. (Do you think it's possible to train an Elephant to spell "intelligent" correctly?)

If you really believe it has been proven that they are smarter than humans (though not smart enough to free themselves apparently) then point me in the direction of the evidence please!

  • I agree with lightshadow, looks like it is just slapping the easel for treats, not at all like the painting elephants in thailand.

  • "Shut up"? "Comment on this video" says the caption - exchange of views & discussions on the videos are part of the whole ethos of this site, which is why the 'Comment' dialog box is there AND WHY YOU USED IT to make your own comment.

So you don't agree with people's comments? Tell them to "shut up", that's really adding to the debate.

I think it is you who needs to grow up.

  • Excellent point, Geoth!

  • i think you all sound like a bunch of losers. why the heck are you all arguing about the elephants. an elephant painting is truly something different and quite amazing. so why dont you all just shut up and enjoy it. my God.look at the other related videos if this isnt "impressing" you enough. grow up.

  • ive seen MUUUCH better elephant artists.

  • actually, there are elephants that can draw things. did you see the video of the elephant who drew an elephant holding a flower? it was unbelievable!

  • look at the other vids T.T

  • This elephant is clearly not as talented as those other elephants that can paint flowers. He should give up now or try abstract art. :P

  • An interesting experiment to try is to take the trained elephant and see if the untrained could learn form the trained.

  • That would be facinating! I'd still like to know if there is some type of traced scent marker the elephant is following. If not, I find it also incredibly amazing the elephant has all those strokes memorised.

  • At last, a video that shows how Elephants paint when not trained to copy a human conceit (Holding a flower - well, really!).

The skill is in it's ability to wield a brush & paint; It does not have the capacity to make a 2d representation of a real-world object. People are so eager to assign animals anthropomorphic qualities that that miss the true beauty in nature.

  • Exactly! And look how happy this elephant is splashing paint around with glee! So neat!!!

  • To Geothemusicman: Why does this video bring you relief? The elephant is still PAINTING! A habit that I'm sure was not instinctual on the savanna. Painting is a human medium period, 2d 3d or 9d!

  • To daviddynette: My relief is at seeing a video of this subject that is not misleading.; the wonder is in the fact that THE ELEPHANTS CAN PAINT - Not only can they paint, but they can TRAINED TO PAINT REPRODUCTIONS of stylised images they copy, with a skill that clearly surpasses that of many humans, which is really truly astonishing.

Unfortunately the inference is being drawn that these paintings are the sole creations of the Elephant's imaginations, which I am afraid is just not the case.

  • I think we agree a lot more than you think. I will say, just as we are taught as children to paint, these elephants have been taught to paint and not by their parent elephant, nor from miraculous inspiration. Some human children prove to be talented artists. Do you think one elephant may be more skilled at the craft than the other, or is that ridiculous?

  • Not ridiculous, more inevitable I'd say.

Is this particular elephant untrained or untalented?

  • Leaning towards untrained...exactly your point. However, I believe talent can be enhanced from lots of good training. A person can have a good ear for music and can study music theory, other artists, and practice, then gaining the ability to express their talent more so. I'd say the first Elephant is talented due to lots of training. Cheers!

  • to daviddynette: Are we arguing over something/anything?

  • this poor elephant just isn't a gifted artist like his brothers and sisters! we can't all be picasso ya know!

  • this poor elephant just isn't a gifted artist like his brothers and sisters! we can't all be picasso ya know!

  • this poor elephant just isn't a gifted artist like his brothers and sisters! we can't all be picasso ya know!

  • the other elephants arent trained. They pain what they like. This one is just not interested.

  • I disagree throughoughly. This elephant actually looks like it's having fun, as do the trainers. I noticed this elephant isn't getting it's ears pulled towards the painting, and the gaping mouth here certainly looks like joy to me. The other elephants clearly had been intensely trained to paint what their handlers thought would be endearing to the tourists. Do you really think an elephant with a flower in it's trunk means the same thing to an elephant as a human?

  • I think this elephant is a tard. hehe

  • What kind of picture was it? From camera's point of view it looks like it's just slashing the canvas and the video didn't show the end result. :(

  • Because that's how and untrained elephant paints. The fools who think the self portrait with the flower is the elephants own imagination. They probably think this one is just not a talented elephant!

  • I know that the other painting was just taught to the elephant. I try not to lower the IQ of teh internets you know. I was just wondering what the end result looked like.

Still, even though the other elephant was taught the picture, some people couldn't even copy the original.

  • haha fair enough! It is AMAZING they have that much control over those massive trunks!!!

  • True. I suppose it's quite comparable to human hand in it's accuracy. Would love to see a world where humans could use their nose as a gripping tool. (not for pens or peas)

  • wow i want a elephant so it cant paint for me and so we can have fun

  • How much does the picture costs? , I mean watching the elephan painting it is very impressive.

  • The picture was given as a gift from the park.

  • cute
