The first prisoner was named Charles Nolin. Nolin was the cousin of Louis Riel. Nolin said to Riel he would not agree to take up arms so Riel took him prisoner. Riel was to have him shot but Nolin decided to take up arms to save his life! Another man was Henry Walters. Walters owned a gun shop in Batoche. One day Riel came to his shop with many armed men and demanded weapons and ammo. When walters said no Riel took him prisoner with many others at the church.
Now about Thomas Scott. Scott was a white man that was captured by the Metis along with 49 others. When in captivity he was screaming at the guards. One night Scott escaped but was captured a little later again. Riel decided to put Scott on trial for treason. Most of the men voted yes to his execution but few said no. Scott was executed by a fireing squad of 5. That was concidered Riels biggest miscalculation.

People need to know that the Government of Canada paid for and produced this short film that appeared on television for years -- it is a part of Canada's shameful history, and our people need to be educated about it. It was missing from our history textbooks for too long. This series of short videos/commercials helps to educate people about what we've missed in school.

He "struggled"? A little abstract. What he did was a bit more concrete - he basically decided to a create a country out of his own in Manitoba, and shot a man there, Thomas Scott, who opposed him. That started a war between Canada and the Metis.
So "struggle" is a polite way of saying he was an armed insurrectionist. But it's not entirely honest.

The first prisoner was named Charles Nolin. Nolin was the cousin of Louis Riel. Nolin said to Riel he would not agree to take up arms so Riel took him prisoner. Riel was to have him shot but Nolin decided to take up arms to save his life! Another man was Henry Walters. Walters owned a gun shop in Batoche. One day Riel came to his shop with many armed men and demanded weapons and ammo. When walters said no Riel took him prisoner with many others at the church.

Now about Thomas Scott. Scott was a white man that was captured by the Metis along with 49 others. When in captivity he was screaming at the guards. One night Scott escaped but was captured a little later again. Riel decided to put Scott on trial for treason. Most of the men voted yes to his execution but few said no. Scott was executed by a fireing squad of 5. That was concidered Riels biggest miscalculation.

Saskatchwan was sold to Canada by the Hudson Bay Company, which owned it at that time. If there would have been some kind of mass communication back then he proably would not have set up a provisional government. Basically he was guilty but in principle it was a reasonable error. Which is why he was pardoned a few yeras ago. He is also considered one of the fathers of confederation (Manitoba). Louis Riel is the only MP in Canadian history to be executed.
