Lovely video... Ruffles (J1) has passed away now... But Granny (J2) is still kicking... first identified in 1911, one of the oldest documented orcas. I miss watching these guys.
@Mess0723@Mess0723 J-Pod is a name for a particular family group or "pod" within the southern resident community of orcas. There are also K and L-pods that belong to that particular community of orcas as well.
@ReneeMagicGrl yes J24 is a female named Echo :) if you search on google for whale research you get to the site from the whale research center, they have all the ID's from J, K and L pod there ^^
Hey I actually sponcer Keet (J33) from the same J pod. I am planning to go to Canada and do some whale watching and hopefully see him or at least the Jpod. I can't wait.
hey i have some good video of Ruffles and granny as well , i'll have toget off my ass and post it for eveyone to see .... i was just off the coast of vancouver when i saw the j-pod , very exciting !
This is J-pod. Ruffles is the 58 year old male orca with the tallest dorsal fin. It actually is curvy, hence the name "Ruffles." His mother is "Granny," the matriarch of J-pod. These orcas stay with their mother their whole life, not with a female they mate with. They live in San Juan Island area for the summer. You can see them from the lighthouse on San Juan Island or go out on whale watching boats. It's thrilling.

Everybody knows that Everybody trys and act so smart that they know his name but I learned that a way long time ago. A 5 year old could /guess/ his name.
I seriously doubt a five year old could guess his name. Chill out. Marilynnblock wasn't even talking to you so there's no need for your snidy comment. And he wasn't acting smart. All marilynnblock was really doing was informing future views what the whales name is, how old he is, etc.
Anyway, all males get wavy dorsal fins eventually. It happens as they grow older and mature.
Thats really cool. I sponcer Keet J33 his mother is Slick and he has an older brother Mike and 2 younger siblings Alki and Echo (the new baby). I know they are around from may until October but when is the best month to try and spot the whales. Do you sponcer any of the whales? and I know this was ages ago but. RIP Luna. If you don't know Luna was a very loved whale and she sadly died.
