I got on the elevator at work on Madision Avenue when I was employed at Warner Brothers Pictures, and huddled into the corner was this man all dressed in black with black hair and all. I was so surprised I said, "You're Ed Sullivan."
He thought about it for a few seconds, and the most beautiful grest big white toothy smile came onto his face, and he said, "Yes. I am."
Dick wasn't kidding. At this time, he was virtually unknown. He had done some stand up comedy spots on the Tonight Show and Merv Griffin's show and a few guest shots on panel game shows (like WML) but that was about it. He wouldn't get his first network show for another two years.
For years WML was broadcast live from a studio that was a former small theater in Grand Central Station. But when CBS went to color in 1965, that studio wasn't big enough for the additional lighting needed, so CBS moved WML to Sullivan's studio. It was a challenge to strike Sullivan's sets and put up the WML set in the 1 1/2 hours between shows which were still being broadcast live.
Gee, I didn't know that WML and the Ed Sullivan show were broadcast from the same theater. So this means, then, that WML was produced in the same theater that David Letterman has his show in?

It's the Ed Sullivan Theater so Ed Sullivan better appear regularly on that stage.
Lots of other shows originated from that theater. David Letterman is the most recent.
