Going into a Hammerlock so as to not make the trainer look bad for not knowing his holds is what anyone who knows their hold names should do. A hammerlock would also be my first guess in that scenario

I have the training DVD and there Samoa joe botches a lot of moves expecially suplexes.

Ironically he billed himself as the "samoan suplex machine" then he understood and became a brawler.
