I used to own a St Bernard more than ten years ago. She was the love of my life and my best friend. When she died it was the most painfull thing I had to do was bury her. she was laid to rest with her stuff toys,blanket and pictures. Animals mean more to me than children. I agree that the previous owners hsould have chosen better, but maybe they had to downsize their home, or maybe certain things came about. You can't say they're stupid if you dont know why they gave him up other than "HE GOT TOO BIG". :-\

It is a known fact that Sts get huge. and 3/4 that size probably means that the ones you've seen are bred from smallar lines, are female, young, or even a combination of those three. This is the normal size for a full male st. that is from the bigger lines. Plus if he isn't a pure bred, if any of the other lines of breed that he has have the "big" gene, he will grow to the full size of some of the bigger breds.

So this dog was given up by his owners because he got too big. How pathetic is that? All it takes is some cursory research to figure out what size a dog will be, based on the breed. And with the Internet that research takes literally seconds. It frustrates me that people put dogs through this; because they find out they can't handle them, when there is plenty of material that is easily accessible to tell you if a particular breed will be right for you.

I'm so glad he was adopted. He's just a big little baby that deserves love and loving home. The people who gave him up didn't deserve him and don't deserve animals period. He's a St. Bernard, what did they think he was going to do? Magically turn into a tea cup size? I'd love a St. Bernard, but I'm afraid they might be uncomfortable in South Los Angeles weather, so I'm sticking to English Bulldog, Great Dane, or English/ Napoleon Mastiff.

Saint Bernards are incredible dogs. If you have the space and the willingness to deal with all the hair and drool, you will have one of the best friendships of your life with a St. Bernard. They bond strongly with their caretaker. While they are indeed gentle, loving, quiet, sweet dogs, they will defend you without hesitation if they feel you're being threatened. Mine just died two weeks ago from bloat. He was a rescue and I had had him almost 4 years. I miss him terribly. He was so loving.

St. Bernards are great dogs, I got one in early '80s and he was my best friend until he passed away. "Beauregard" was always good with kids and very protective of anybody I cared about, he was a 187lb. lap dog who could clear off the coffee table once that big tail started wagging! What people need to understand is that they are great in any setting because they adapt so well!!
