  • This is great! I have an old geo metro that I want to convert

  • How do I find out how to build one

  • @spedshift

One way is to go to 300MPG.org and purchase a copy of the instructional video, BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC CAR.

  • im 16 and want to convert a car to electric but my dad says its a waste of money so how much would it be to convert a car?

  • @MrIpodcollector

That's a bit like asking how much a house costs.... It depends.

I built my own simple electric car for about $1300 total. You can easily spend lots of money on an electric car, but it you put in the work yourself, and make use of used and homebuilt parts, it can be done on not too large of a budget.

  • what would you say the average age in the room is? 56? this isnt good :|

  • @shithustler420

I've looked at the statistics on my YouTube videos. The biggest single segment of viewer is 55 year old Males.

I think that that age still has a bit of the earlier spirit of DIY and hands-on repairs. Cars now seem to be all computer controlled. The electric car conversions seem to appeal to guys who come from the age of carburators and points.

  • Ben, this truly inspired me!!! Looking for garage space to rent right now, craigslist has a couple of non-running cars, electronic warehouse for dc motor nearby, going to order the controller from the link you recommended... My main issue, I have nooo idea what i'm doing or where to find the expertise to help me pull the engine [and other stuff i need to keep] and a machinist to help me with the coupler and mounting plate. But I am soooo ready to do this.. not giving up.

  • @DHMIII

I designed the BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC CAR: CHEAP DVD as an intro for people who don't know where to start. You can find that at 300MPG dot org

Also, check out books on EV conversion at your local library. There are quite a few good ones out there right now.

  • AMAZING BEN!!!!

i am doing the same thing for a senior project in college

my bro and i will be taking a vw dune buggy and converting it to electric

any suggestions or tips to help us along?

  • @tarsman013

    Sounds like fun!

Watch the upcoming other sections of this presentation for more general tips.

Check out MPaulHolmes videos. He converted a VW Bug!

  • @tarsman013 you can watch evtv.me too

the temptation is to use lead batteries but I say always go with lithium, it's cheaper in reality due to the lower mass drag and the longer life.

thundersky is a DIY favorite because it's simple and affordable.

you might want to choose a real car when spending all that effort anyway. a 92/93 Geo Storm seems quite aerodynamic and relatively light. and can be found cheap. aerodynamics is the dominant energy drain at above 100km/h. cut in half doubles range

  • Very good job Ben!!! And it looks like a pretty good audience too! I also can't wait for video 2. You just keep moving up in the world. Keep up the good work!

  • @MPaulHolmes

You'll notice that I was wearing my Open ReVolt t-shir!

  • Awesome guy =P

  • Part 2?

  • @afdhalatifftan92

Hold your horses, it's being edited...

    Check back tomorrow.

  • @BenjaminNelson

    Lol! Sure!

    Can't wait to see it...
