After all these years I still expect this to be followed by Supers Ready. Thumbs up here, if you, too, expect to hear Gabriel singing "Walking across the sitting room.... " after hearing Horizons. In fact we all thought it was the introduction before we looked at the LP notes. .... Or was it just me? Oh well.
Wow. I had no idea Hackett could play acoustic guitar so beautifully. In my view, he's much more musical than Howe. Howe is so ham-fisted. I'm impressed. (and yes, I do see the Bach derivative here. Still, it's amazingly well played with feeling).
Three dislikes? Must have pressed the wrong tab by mistake. How do you go to this video and not expect something besides what it delivers. Beautiful and timeless music.
I wish steve would do another pop album, maybe could be called 'Cured Again?' I think with the modern technology and his voice now being a lot stronger it could be a great release.. also he should bring back Nick Magnus
Is mazing how he makes it look so easy. This is a very hard song play (i know because If now the entire music) and he plays it like hes playing a basic song that any baby can play. Very good.
You are right. They are not equal. But the inspiration has been aknowledged by Steve Hackett himself (he was practising on this Suite when Horizons sprang to his mind)
jazzplati. I do not get excited at all. I'd prefer to hear something that is pure Hackett rather than Hackett-strongly-inspired-by-Bach. Hackett himself has acknolweged the derivation
So I've just interviewed this gentleman here, only to discover that my very sophisticated KORG Tone Works PXR4 hasn't recorded a single word of what Mr Hackett said, graciously leaving me with nothing else than my memory to remember the ton...s of names and titles the man has mentioned.
Selling a PXR4 by the pound, in case you're interested.
I saw him doing this at University College of Swansea (as was) in 1983; (he performed it twice in fact that evening). When I see some of the talentless wannabees on X Factor, I want to show them this video and say; 'that's a musician AND Rockstar, so go back to your video game guitars'.
A wonderful combination of grace and dexterity. Though it is slightly rushed (especially at the end); this is my favorite version. I wish more of his nylon guitar work was availabe on DVD.
Well, you could very well be right, but even in the actual album version (off Foxtrot) they sound identical. The album was recorded in '73 so I could understand an audio quality and I can understand this being a live performance.
I think it is hard to tell without seeing that left hand. Harmonics or dead note, I absolutly love them :)
I looked at a few other versions and I think there is a good chance you are right- there is another version of it, though the camera is quite far away unlike this video which focuses on his hands, and it looked like it was not a dead note- but as said, the camera was far away and the differences of a few inches can easily be distorted by the distance and poor quality.
It could well be the other way round, "Horizons' is from the 1972 Genesis album "Foxtrot" and Jaco's album appeared in 1974. But a more realistic guess is that both pieces are based on Bach's first cello suite.
This is blissful

It s not a question of how many notes or how dificult . Back in 72 it was an incredible piece before the fantastic Suppers Ready music .
There was something magic about the music

Steve Hackett has nothing but tons of beauty in his hands. This piece is just masterful, tender and pure awsome.
signorechanta 1 year ago
this piece was inspired by the prelude in G major for Cello by Bach,
but obviously Hackett just got inspired by that, it doesnt mean that he's actually playing THAT song, this is unique, and very emotional, awesome...

The first two bars sound the exact same.. I never noticed that. Weird..

Horizons has been inspired by J. S. Bach: Suite for cello n. 1 in G BWV 1007 (Prelude). It is actually almost equal. Listen to it!

The intros are pretty similar. I won't really call it equal though.
