Desire HD's a shocker. Not only is it a monstrous piece of engineering, what it tries to be is what it's worst at.
The nice large screen is a selling feature, so they add a screen that is quite frankly well past it's sell by date. No retina, no amoled, just a basic screen made larger.
Then there's the performance, it's so sluggish, browsing the net takes a month. The call quality is terrible, the biggest reason is because it's so quiet, you don't hear it ring. Finally, battery life is a shocker

Blackberry for example go their own way and make a quality device with no care or desperation what Apple do.

The Desire HD isn't exactly pocket-friendly. We’ve been making calls with the thing and holding it against your face not only makes your hand ache, but feels a little daunting, even if the call quality is perfectly fine. The screen resolution matches most of the top Android devices, but doesn't quite give you the sharpness of the Apple iPhone 4. Like the others it does have a glossy finish, so reflections will be a problem and viewing it next to a window or outdoors will never be easy.
Is the Desire HD a phone or a tablet? We think it's a bit of both. Although its size means it looks hilarious when held up against your face, its 120mm (4.3-inch) screen has been slapped onto a slim case, which means it's technically possible to pop it into a pocket. (Although this is not advisable) Unlike the iPad, the Desire HD doesn't feel like a pack of A4 paper that's come to life. It feels more like a very, very big phone, in the same way that the HTC HD2 did.
Unfortunately, we are not so impressed with the overall quality of the phone. It doesn’t feel cheap but we wouldn’t classify it as a top-shelf model either. The rear of the device has plastic inserts which are disjointed, you can see the gaps on pictures of the phone. The size of the phone instantly turns us off, it can fit in the pocket, but it's certainly not comfortable. Other problems include the screen quality and battery life. It's strange to see these faults in a high end smartphone.

I got this phone yesterday And my one does not have a gap between the sim card cover and the phone altho i have heard of that problem! Although i love the htc and this large screen admittedly htc needs to put more research into their speaker system, this is the third htc phone ive owned and all them seemed to have an issue with the sound when playing music, its very tinny and have to turn the sound bar well past the halfway mark to just about hear anything, if you are not lookin at this a

Every company that wants to connect with people, bring out an app for the iPhone. An app for finding its free wifi hotspots. Sky, BBC, CNN, Premiership. Even your own football team has it's own dedicated application.
Just been downloading new ringtones to iTunes, just a matter of dragging to iTunes folder and all is done. Apps for iPhone which you actually pay for are so much in the minority. Then free music sites are many.
iPhone is just so simple, yet stunning, it's so sexy.
The speaker is truly horrific on this phone. It's the worst I've ever heard. The quality is appalling. My N73 from 4 years ago sounds a LOT better than this, let alone my iPhone 4!

The sim card cover is made of a brittle plastic and fails to sit flush with the aluminum back. The side-mounted battery lid is pretty much a nightmare with the no retention for the power cell, which just slides out and falls on the floor.
The aluminum sticks out in front of the screen, the problem is apparent on both sides of the display, it's just a failure on HTC's part, The Desire HD rests directly on the camera lens itself, which anyone serious about photography would cringe at. The screen?

Hey David. I have a rooted HTC Desire with RCMixHD_v0.10, unfortunately it does not have a functioning camera app, besides that everything works.. Do you know if there is any rom out there which has the same features (sense hd) and includes a functioning camera app?
Hi there! I was a little disappointed with the quality of the Desire HD. The uni-body is outstanding but the plastic used are really really bad. They don't rest properly. The screen is OK, but don't expect too much, definitely no wow factor. The loud speaker is very tinny. I personally found the camera for still images to be outstanding but for the HD video recording is not up to the mark. And finally, the battery is mediocre. This is my experience with the DHD. HTC could have done it better!

So to sum up.......... poor battery life, poor screen, enormous size, headphone port on the bottom, no front facing camera, no gyroscope, poor ringtone volume....
I gave in and got one. I have now gone back, what an absolutely terrible piece of kit. It doesn't even know what it is. Am I a phone? Am I a laptop? Am I an iPad? Am I a brick?
The only thing I can say for certain, it's very, very hungry. Get a day out of this brick and you have done well. You could follow HTC advise and turn off wi-fi, 3G. Notifications, Multi Tasking, Locations etc.....
In other words, treat this beast with extreme caution,
@wafcarl There are several reasons why the battery isn't so good yet. first of all, use it for 10 days to get a much better performance. ALso, when in idle, there is a proces that takes 100 % CPU. This sucks energy. It's a software bug. It will be fixed soon.

They try everything but cant overhaul them, so only one thing was left, make the phone even bigger. Mobile Phones were thought to be better when smaller not to long ago, but HTC is doing it's best to change that.

The Desire HD isn't exactly pocket-friendly. We’ve been making calls with the thing and holding it against your face not only makes your hand ache, but feels a little daunting, even if the call quality is perfectly fine. The screen resolution matches most of the top Android devices, but doesn't quite give you the sharpness of the Apple iPhone 4. Like the others it does have a glossy finish, so reflections will be a problem and viewing it next to a window or outdoors will never be easy.

Is the Desire HD a phone or a tablet? We think it's a bit of both. Although its size means it looks hilarious when held up against your face, its 120mm (4.3-inch) screen has been slapped onto a slim case, which means it's technically possible to pop it into a pocket. (Although this is not advisable) Unlike the iPad, the Desire HD doesn't feel like a pack of A4 paper that's come to life. It feels more like a very, very big phone, in the same way that the HTC HD2 did.

Unfortunately, we are not so impressed with the overall quality of the phone. It doesn’t feel cheap but we wouldn’t classify it as a top-shelf model either. The rear of the device has plastic inserts which are disjointed, you can see the gaps on pictures of the phone. The size of the phone instantly turns us off, it can fit in the pocket, but it's certainly not comfortable. Other problems include the screen quality and battery life. It's strange to see these faults in a high end smartphone.

I got this phone yesterday And my one does not have a gap between the sim card cover and the phone altho i have heard of that problem! Although i love the htc and this large screen admittedly htc needs to put more research into their speaker system, this is the third htc phone ive owned and all them seemed to have an issue with the sound when playing music, its very tinny and have to turn the sound bar well past the halfway mark to just about hear anything, if you are not lookin at this a

The Desire HD is quite frankly garbage. I was expecting a nice aluminium rear, not a rear full of cheap plastic panels.
The screen is terrible, why no amoled or retina? I sent an email to HTC, the response was "it would reduce battery life"

I suppose the best way to compare the screens on iPhone 4 and HD is to use television.
So, would you prefer a 36 inch tv in standard format, or a 32 inch in high definition?
The differences in screen are the same.
If you prefer the 36 inch in standard format, why not get a 42 inch in standard format, aka The Dell Streak.
For me, it's quality over quantity, it can only be The iPhone 4.

The iPhone looks so much sleeker and smooth. At the end of the day, every single mobile phone company are trying replicate the iPhone.
So many times they have tried, but keep failing. Touchscreen phones were brought out for ease of use, but they cant understand that.
Then, all these buttons on the front of them, yet none of them swith the phone out of standby mode, you have to use the main power button at the top.
With such a humongous device as the desire hd, that's a real two handed operation.

Every company that wants to connect with people, bring out an app for the iPhone. An app for finding its free wifi hotspots. Sky, BBC, CNN, Premiership. Even your own football team has it's own dedicated application.
Just been downloading new ringtones to iTunes, just a matter of dragging to iTunes folder and all is done. Apps for iPhone which you actually pay for are so much in the minority. Then free music sites are many.

The speaker is truly horrific on this phone. It's the worst I've ever heard. The quality is appalling. My N73 from 4 years ago sounds a LOT better than this, let alone my iPhone 4!
The battery life is quite simply atrocious.
I found the on board messaging very annoying. I don’t like threads, or SMS mixed up with social networking posts
Again, the built in app is awful, try downloading the "Handcent" app it's a great SMS/MMS program that works just like the iPhone’s.

After very careful consideration and reading a number of reviews I had no option than to choose The iPhone 4.
The Desire HD seems to drink battery life like a tramp drinks special brew?!
The Desire HD is also way too big for me. If I want a small HD screen to watch movies I'll probably buy a lap top!
Putting the Desire HD in your pocket is fine, but be very careful when sitting down.
Plastic battery and sim tray covers, poor reception, shocking battery life, no lens cover.

Apple had plenty to live up to after making the three highest-rated phones to date and with the competition stiffer than ever, it could have been a problem. But Apple has done enough to stay ahead, thanks to the iPhone 4's camera, iOS 4, and a simply stunning screen. The iPhone 4 is very expensive, but no other phone can offer quite the same class, sheer, silky pleasure and is so much a status symbol as this beautiful piece of engineering.
The iPhone 3GS is gone -- long live the iPhone 4.

The sim card cover is made of a brittle plastic and fails to sit flush with the aluminum back. The side-mounted battery lid is pretty much a nightmare with the no retention for the power cell, which just slides out and falls on the floor.
The aluminum sticks out in front of the screen, the problem is apparent on both sides of the display, it's just a failure on HTC's part, The Desire HD rests directly on the camera lens itself, which anyone serious about photography would cringe at. The screen?

I wanted this phone to be brilliant. What I simply can not understand or excuse, why did HTC not complete the jigsaw. Everything to make this phone be the best in the world was there, but they declined to do it.
Major design flaws including the camera stuck out the back of the device.
Poor quality plastics over sim and battery trays.
Mediocre battery life. Surely, more memory, more power and enormous screen would set the alarm bells ringing on battery life?

Hey David. I have a rooted HTC Desire with RCMixHD_v0.10, unfortunately it does not have a functioning camera app, besides that everything works.. Do you know if there is any rom out there which has the same features (sense hd) and includes a functioning camera app?

Hi there! I was a little disappointed with the quality of the Desire HD. The uni-body is outstanding but the plastic used are really really bad. They don't rest properly. The screen is OK, but don't expect too much, definitely no wow factor. The loud speaker is very tinny. I personally found the camera for still images to be outstanding but for the HD video recording is not up to the mark. And finally, the battery is mediocre. This is my experience with the DHD. HTC could have done it better!

I gave in and got one. I have now gone back, what an absolutely terrible piece of kit. It doesn't even know what it is. Am I a phone? Am I a laptop? Am I an iPad? Am I a brick?
The only thing I can say for certain, it's very, very hungry. Get a day out of this brick and you have done well. You could follow HTC advise and turn off wi-fi, 3G. Notifications, Multi Tasking, Locations etc.....
In other words, treat this beast with extreme caution,
Oh, and get yourself a briefcase to carry it. lol

@wafcarl There are several reasons why the battery isn't so good yet. first of all, use it for 10 days to get a much better performance. ALso, when in idle, there is a proces that takes 100 % CPU. This sucks energy. It's a software bug. It will be fixed soon.
