My best friend and I worked at the ponyride mentioned in this video back in the early 70's, junior high & high school. We loved it! I can still remember all the ponies' names, and the Stars who brought their children there for an afternoon of sweet childhood memories. It was a great little Beverly Hills Secret !
Ralph Story had a simple delivery that was so effective. He did so much by letting the story take center stage. ...that was the secrit of Ralph Story!
Hey thanks so much for sharing. I cried like I had lost a family member when they closed it down. I loved the bumper cars and remember they had a tennis ball hanging down on a chain to check your height to go on it alone. And the ponys too. I remember how I loved giving a cube of sugar to those horses still in their stalls. The Beverly Center was and is still a curse. An ugly piece of concrete, plastic and steel blotting out the sun. Thanks Again fellow Beverlander.
glad to find this. brought back a lot of memories. i grew up about 1 mile from there...on maryland drive...and i loved going there. my mother used to get mad at me because when i was about 10, 11, 12 years old i would wake up early on saturday mornings and sneak in and feed the horses apple slices. i was so sad when i went one time and all the ponies were gone...
this is great, I held my oldest daughter's first birthday there in 1973, I remember it cost me 101.00 and that took care of 40 kids and their parents, a birthday cake, hot dogs, drinks, and ride tickets! a great deal by today's standards! I was so sorry to see it go!
My grandmother used to take me there in the 1970's. I loved it so much. The carousel, the boat ride, the ferris wheel, the train thing w/ the cow that moved & the barrel that pretended 2 fall on you. I live a block away from what it is now called, "The Beverly Center". So shitty. I refuse 2 go into that dump. We'd go on pony rides & my pony was named, "Cookie". I will never forget yet it pains me deeply 2 see that shithole of a place where true happiness once existed in the middle of L.A.
@knockout68 I know what you mean. I was born in and raised in Los Angeles and as a kid in the 60's it was a sweet place to be a kid. Now it cost a fortune to take kids to all these corporate franchise cookie cutter rip offs like ChuckECheese. A kid can't have real fun anymore. It breaks my heart. About the only thing left is Traveltown at Griffith Park.. No way would I pay that ransom to get into Disnetland.
Thank you so much for posting this. I remember the place very well. My mother took me there on several occasions. After all these years seeing the footage of some of the old rides made it seem like it was only yesterday.
I remember the boats that went around in a circle and the western wagons and the duckies too! My brother once knocked out a tooth on the Whip (bumper cars). ( I think it was called the Whip.) Ponies ran slow, trot, and cantor. Hated the trot! ANd they always ran right back into their stalls.
Of course I remember! I was so upset when they tore it down! My dad used to take me and my brother there on Saturdays. I loved that little roller coaster but was afraid of the haunted house! Ponies were fun too. Please Google "Why I Hate the Beverly Center" and read more of my memories!
At the end the old guy says "now there's no place for kids to go on their birthday". No place I guess except Chuchee Cheeze and five thousand other places.
Outstanding vidclip, Adam Conlea--thanks for posting it. I remember Beverly Park very well. Born (1952) in L.A., I attended MANY birthday parties there; plus my dad would take me there periodically just for fun. I remember the helicopter ride, and a haunted house ride, and how the roller coaster scared me. Off to the side of the park was a billboard built close to the ground; my friends and I would climb around inside its foundation and superstructure. Beautiful memories!
I worked there, for probably 3 years, 1964-1967, after school on Friday from 3PM-5PM and all day on Saturday, Sunday. I started for .95/hour and got raises until I made $1.55/hour. I started out operating the boat ride & advanced until I was operating the Dodge Em and Ferris Wheel & Merry-Go-Round. It was a very good job, except for having to pick up the cigarette butts from the gravel ground. A wonderful memory. Aloha from the North Shore of Oahu.
Great footage from here in "A Guide for the Married Man" (1967).

My wife went here as a child. I remember driving by before it was demolished. Later on, I worked near the site after it became the Beverly Center.
