I've seen the other sketches where he is more of a mindless eating machine, but if you ask me giving him that voice made him a hundred times more unsettling.
I can explaing best by paraphasing this part of a short horror story where a young man just saw his friend eaten by a swamp monster-"I saw craftiness, something sly that said I know exactly what I'm doing. Intelliegence, that's what it comes down too, and intelligence in a creature like that is a horrible thing indeed."
This character, Yorick, when voiced by Jim Henson, usually sounded very gruff. Imagine Rowlf the Dog but deeper and even more gravelly. I have two Sam and Friends episodes with Yorick speaking as voiced by Jim as well as "Where Hunger Is From". Sam speaks in one episode as well. Only three sentences and he sounds like Guy Smiley from Sesame Street but I'm not sure if that was ever his permanent voice.
This muppet character was named either Yorik or York. I was TERRIFIED of him as a kid. See, he ate EVERYTHING, including other muppets. Jim Henson started out in the Washington area, and we watched his show regularly. And whenever he came on, I'd run and hide.
Man, Jim Henson's Muppets sure loved to lip-synch back in the '50s and early '60s didn't they? Even Sam, the star of "Sam and Friends," just lip-synched; he never had his own voice!
Is does this video make anyone else feel uncomfortable? D: WTF is this?

The voice is an old "Word Jazz" recording by Ken Nordine. Predates the sketch.

@CanadianSushi828 You see, Sam and Friends, the TV show this aired on, was abstract and different.

Imagine if Yorik was voiced by James Earl Jones or Jack Nicholson....

Only other voices worthy to compete, but the original Word Jazzman is still without parallel...
