This is one of the best product tests for any product I've ever seen. I like how you used the green screen to show us exactly what was happening on the recorder. I love the fact you showed a number of external microphone applications so if someone was looking for a specific type of mic then they can find it. This made my purchase way ever. Thank you good sir. Awesome video.
@hotboyme Thanks for your comment, the mode we recorded in is 16 Bit 48k wav. You have the option of going up to 24 Bit 96k. You can also record MP3 compressed files at 32kbps, 64kbps 96, 128,192,256,320 as well as BWF 16bit and 24 bit.
Could you confirm that the recording hasn't been modified and there is no noise from the internal microphones? I bought a Samson C01U plug and play which was noisy and don't want to make the same mistake again. Cheers Tim
@timawells Thanks for asking. The audio file is as is from the recorder- completely untouched. This is the actual audio that you will get with the DR-40 and the microphones tested.
i was wondering if its possible to actually record both the internal stereo mic aswell as both of the external channels at the same time? (essentially 4 unique mono tracks, true 4track recording)
@tividor Yes, you can record to the Internal mics as well as the XLR inputs at the same time. Simply change the REC MODE to 4 channel. It's 4 unique tracks inside 2 separate, Two Track files.
Guy, Thanks for the great review. I'm looking for a solution to a 'buzz' problem on my Sony CX700 and think that a PCM recorder is the way to go. If possible, I want to avoid adding the sound in post, so (1) am considering connecting my Rode SVM via Y cable L/R ext mic inputs on the DR-40 and (2) from the headphone out to the mic input on the handycam. Obviously I'll have a useable recording on the DR-40, but will it go to the SONY? Interestingly, iRig mic to iPhone 4 using a m2m plug does work.
@anjonjp If you're going to take the Headphone/Line out, you'll want to use a Line to Mic cable with a -50dB pad. We make one. Google "dvcreator line to mic cable"
@dvestore Thank you for your prompt reply. It's truly appreciated it. Also, I have taken a look at the cable you suggest. Will definitely be putting all of this into consideration. I also read your excellent write-up on the Roland R-26 on your Facebook page. Thank you for doing this, it really helps us all out a lot.
Which mic would you recommend between the NTG-1 & NTG-2?
That is, is it better to have the mic powered off the phantom power of the Tascam (NTG-1), or is it better to power the mic from its own battery (NTG-2)?
Which will give a better signal/less noise/hum? Or would there be no difference? Thanks
Hi from the UK. I was looking through reviews of this unit to accompany DSLR filming and it's the coolest demonstration. You can see everything and hear it in action so thanks!
great video guys! I just bought one of these. now how do we mount this thing? Im going to use it for DSLR v ideo is there an adapter for it or does it come with a 1/4 "20 screw
@christianhermida Zoom has an inexpensive 1/4-20 to cold shoe for around $20 check it out at dvestore - it's called the HS-1. I personally prefer the Manfrotto 492 LCD so I can articulate the unit and watch the levels/battery status/recording status those are about $49 though.
Hi m8, ive just bought one of these recorders as to me the build quality and features beats any other at this price range. Is that a mic stand your dr-40 is on?
@4009richard Just a tip that will save you lots of battery life when shooting in the field with condensers.. Get condenser mics with battery power like the shotgun NTG-series from RÖDE. One extra battery will in that way usually bring almost a day more in battery life.
@hey86x Thanks! One of the new features in the Tascam DR-40 is called "Peak Reduction" which helps set the levels for you - it will automatically bring the levels down should things get loud - the only drawback is that it may not be fast enough to catch rapid rises, so the Dual mode is an excellent "Safety track".
@kiksterman Thank you. I appreciate the comment. I'm glad that you found the video to be helpful, positive comments like yours make us want to create even more awesome content.
btw, what do u think this recorder comparing to Zoom H4n? what are the major differences? is this worth the saving? (since its cheaper than the h4n) or maybe i just better spend more on h4n? i need ur opinion here, thanks.
@huggeek The Dual recording with the safety track is the biggest benefit over the H4n. I would spend the money saved on a mixer - that way you can really hear where your $100 went :)
@thenetfilmmaker That would be a good test. I'm not a huge fan of the AT875r, but the price is amazing. That would make a good pair. I'll have to get one and test it out, because yes, the AT875r is "hotter" than the NTG-1. You can listen to the two in another vid we uploaded youtube.com/watch?v=PwHc7hWGwHc
@dvestore Thanks, I love the rode mics, but the ntg-1,2, really need a preamp/ mixer with these music oriented recorders. The ntg3 would be ideal but out of this price point. The at875 setup has potential of being a acceptable audio solution south of $500. I really appreciate the response. By the way, the link you posted isn't working.
@thenetfilmmaker I'll have to get in another AT875 to test. Sry the link was bad. The episode of ours is called "Recording audio in less than ideal conditions" watch?v=PwHc7hWGwHc
@elevn7 Hi Jack! Thanks for watching. Yes, absolutely. Although I did not demo the internal mics, they sound quite good when recorded to the SD card. There is a reverb effect. I like that I can record the two XLR's and still record using the on-board mics. For under $200, I think we're going to see a lot of these out in the field. I just hope that are serious save up for a mixer too to get the best results.
its not a joke, you did all this for the test, Amazing video very helpful, thanx.. Like.

do you need to use a mixer to adjust the individual levels of the 4 tracks? I believe on the Zoom H4N you can?

Hey man, I have the same headphone and same mixer :-)
So you have doubled the track one lower than the other: this is really great!
Well, what are the other 2 meters?
Thank you very much!

Just used this for my new short film. It rocks! Better than the other two choices mainly because of the dual track mode.

@dvestore yep i totally agree with you, a mixer is very important, n i think thats the way i'd go too for now..
got any advice for a 'best value' field mixer out there? need it for video production

Im really curious about how this performs with the at875, which if im not mistaken is a bit hotter than the ntg-1

Great demo Guy, nice to see you again. Been a while.
Would it be possible to use one of these as an external
mic for a prosumer video recorder ?
Are there any built in effects like reverb for example?
thanks for the demo. ;)
cheers!
