  • Now i wanna hear Lou Reed through Sunn O))) sound.

  • I first found out about this album when I was walking along side a street with my friend and we heard a guy yell "PIECE OF SHIT" and he threw a cd out the window almost hitting me in the head. We took it back home and listened to it and I realized why the guy threw it out the window.

  • This album has it's fans- Ian Astbury of the Cult, Howard Stern. I kind of like it, not the best album ever made. I think it will bounce back a little bit in a few years and be regarded as influential or ahead of it's time, maybe. I certainly don't hear this awful album people have said it is..

  • god damn it's so funny when Anthony says I'm the Table! i could watch that part over and over and still laugh lol

  • I'm the Table!

  • i dont hate this one

its one of the album that when you listen it in the right mude its a good album but you cant listen it all the time

  • I really like the end of all of his reviews, it just really pleasant

  • Y NO HAIR?

  • I'm... not a fan of this album. Although the theme was very good in being consistent, it really just sounded... meh. Also, the source material in this context just... I don't know, didn't work for me.

Also, they must have been trolling on some level, I agree lol.

  • OFF! shirt?

  • lulu is good music!

  • 666 videos!?

  • I actually like the record, I do agree with you about the guitar sound, and have thought the same with every Metallica album since the black album. Its easy to say oh this sucks, but if you give it a sincere listen and pay no mind to the opinions of others, its a decent record.

  • "doing what they want to do"... you took the words right outta my mouth... they are doing what they want to do.. yea this may not be their golden years anymore but who cares you have to give them credit for atleast doing stuff especially since they both have been around since the 70s, yea it may sound like shit but who cares they are doing what they are doing and i respect them both for it!

  • lets hear for frankY LOL

  • Maybe if Lou had to have picked a different band to back him up, people wouldn't hate it as much. When people think of Metallica, they like their chunga-chunga guitars, and not much else. Lou has always put out challenging music, but because Metallica has done something different, it was panned.

  • I'm the table! that still gets me

  • I AM THE TABLE

seriously though, it sucks really hard

  • The hole almum just seems lazy and improvised.

I can appreciate not giving a fuck about the response, but taking a big brown rancid shit all over your fanbase crosses the line from addmirable to plain deuche-baggary by miles.

I hate the ''poetry'' not because of the themes. I actually like those. They're just clumsy in therms of writing and lazy in terms of rhyme.

Suckage, intentional or not, is stliss suckage.

  • oblivionized !

  • personally i prefered st. anger than death magnetic

  • I AM THE TABLE.

  • Much more thoughtful and considered review than any others I've seen/read. Still yet to hear the whole record, only heard snippets so far. And dude, I would LOVE to hear Lou reed collaborate with Electric Wizard!!

  • I gave the hole album a listen so i gave it a shot. It was ok but I'm not a Lou reed fan. just glad i didn't buy it. I hope Metallica does not do this again.

  • I love Metallica, and i dis all the haters! But fuck me... this Lulu album pissed me the hell off. Not 1 song is any good, Ive never thrown a Metallica CD in the bin but lord i wont ever listen to it again. I want my money back assholes!

  • I don't buy the excuse, 'it's not a Metallica album so don't knock it' - sentiment. Metallica's name is on the monstrosity, so fans have an expectation not to hear stuff like "I AM THE TABLE", 'Spermless like a girl' and something about a couple of monkeys in the last track, it's like Weird Al Yankovic wrote a parody of Metallica collaborating with Lou Reed but even he was too embarrassed to admit to being part of it. It's a feel good album - I was laughing the whole way through...

  • still can't get over him saying i'm the table it's still funny as hell and just the fact that that's one of the lyrics makes me laugh i even heard the song the view it's self and laghed worst and funniest abstract lyrics of all time.

  • agreed

  • 0:11 - 0:14 Basically every Metallica fan's reaction to the collaboration lol

  • No, it is insane... i dont think its terrible, its just interesting.

  • Most people who say it SUCKS probably haven't even listened to it.

  • @MrTrufflePigs I listened. It sucks.

  • I bought this album and I think it's just a waste of money.

  • Ever since Metallica shunned everyone who shares music and content online I never respected or bought anything from them again.

  • @Wiseguyzmoney they had a right to do that...i would've done the exact same thing

  • @willcapps420 Of course. And I also have the right to never pay for a concert from them again too. So ya.

  • @Wiseguyzmoney lol...i get where you're coming from though if you feel that way about it...i just happen to feel the same way they did about it ya know...it'd be the same thing as you and i (for example) sitting down and writing a novel..by the time it's done,,it's already synced across itunes, loaded onto every1's ipad,,other artist plagerizing our work blah blah blah...i guess i can see where people are coming from who feel the same way you are though. it was never about "money"

  • i fucking love lou reed and the velvet underground

and i dont like metallica.....at all

  • @admiralgumdrops i'm a HUGE metallica fan but ever since i heard this i've became more interested in lou reed and velvet underground :-) i like all different types of music though :-) besides rap that is lol

  • Thankyou for directing me to the better songs of this album (appreciate that). I heard 'the View' and my reaction was "bleuh!" but I did quite like 'Dragon' (which you suggest) until it got to about the 7th minute and still sounded pretty much the same as it did in minutes 1-6. I think it needed to be shorter and contain more dynamic, but it's alot better than 'the view' (I think). Thanks again for the in depth review!

  • EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • I respectfully disagree with you regarding the album, I personally think it's terrible. Props for the OFF! shirt though.

  • Haven't listened to this, but I am going to give it a fair listen after hearing this review

  • I think the "editing mistake" was him checking wikipedia to see if Lou was still alive

  • Is this guy trolling? o___O

  • I don't care if it's a metallica album or not.Its shit ....Metallica think they can fart in a microphone and people will buy it up and if you bought lulu you proved them right.

  • What is the album anthony has in the background? Please answer.

  • @willbobmud Jay Reatard - Matador Singles

  • To me this album is a Joke/Fuck you/Experimental .In a recent live show Lars said " We are going to play Lulu in its entirety" then he said " Just kidding lol". Even in the interview for promoting the cd Kirk Hammett said that every track was recorded on the first take ...that's why some tracks are off. I was surprised how blunt and offensive the cd was. The first track I listened to was "Pumping blood" , I was like not bad, not bad ....then Lou kicked in uhhhhh.I would give it a fair 4/10 .

  • you are the guy that i was waiting to hear!

-metallica and lou reed make the music they wanted to do.

    -we dont get it.

-we act like mass : we dont like it, were angry.

personally, i just dont like it. but i respect both bands, a lot!

  • Haha the music sucks, but this is pure fucking genius by both artists

  • So its a troll album and yes it does a pretty good job of pissing me off, good for metallica and Lou Reed for that i guess. Unfortunately, this album is also horrendously bad. There is no way this is better than Audio, Video, Disco. No. Way. I mean, jesus even the album cover is just....ridiculous, it's obnoxiously pretentious, which pretty much describes the whole album,

I don't care who's name is attached to it, it sucks.

  • Thumb's up for a Metallica/Bjork collaboration!

  • Cool

  • this album is a 5/5 for mee

listed it as 2 of 2011

    right behind nickelbacks new masterpiece

  • @benjaminkinkaidiris Seriously?

  • @powershifting He has to be joking right?

  • @benjaminkinkaidiris regards, President of the Nickelback fan club

  • @benjaminkinkaidiris i can smell your sarcasm

  • @benjaminkinkaidiris i hope thats sarcasm

  • So this is lulu thing I was hearing about, lol Iced honey

  • Metallica took a crap and collectively wiped their butts with a Lou Reed poem. It's terrible.

  • Offended? This album doesn't offend me, I would have loved a good Metallica/Lou Reed combo album. It's not offensive all.

What it is, is just not good, and/or bad. That is all.

  • great review, man!!!

I don't know why many people is expecting to hear "Master of Puppets" every time Metallica releases something new

again, well done review dude!! you are the best. cheers!!!

  • @DimwaDepenga Yes,people do expect some hard ass shit from Metallica.Anthrax, and Megadeth both have came out with killer hard thrash albums,WHY-IN -THE-FUCK CAN'T METALLICA DO THE SAME,I will tell you why, because james, lars and kirk sold out years AGO,and when we thought they learned thier lesson with D.M....sorry!!!! They have let the fame and money fry thier brains, and thier fans are now Anthrax and MEGADETH FANS TO THE CORE!!!Metallica is dead.

  • @KJBPSkipper "fame and money"? LOL, you can't say that Metallica is "sold out" or "dead", that's absurd!! 'cos you can't say Lulu is a very commercial album! Metallica is just playing what they fuckin' want to play, not what stupid close-minded metalheads want to hear.

I repeat: Metallica is not dead, because they are not playing something that EVERYBODY could easily hear.

And after all, what authority do you have to enunciate a very conclusive phrase such as "Metallica is dead"??

  • @DimwaDepenga Wait a minute, cosed minded metal heads!? Really?! So I guess you are saying that metal is not creative enough or what?! Listen motherfucker, metal has alot more meaning to it then over half of this computer generated crap this new generation listens to...........................GO FUCK YOURSELF.Metallica should be pumping out what the fans want, period, because they are what pays thier way in life, without them, they are NOTHING.Stick to the music you know asshole.

  • @KJBPSkipper I'm not talking about Metal music and musicians. I'm not even talking about all metalheads, but specifically "close minded" ones.

I'm a metalhead also, man!! I know better than anyone that Metal is a really talented and creative Music genre..

  • @DimwaDepenga Then why are we having this conversation, because you need to be more specific on what you mean, dumb shit,do not bother writing back,I am done.

  • @DimwaDepenga That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Remember that song from years ago it was called One? Yeah, that had an MTV video. Three letters- M.T.V. Metallica sold out a long time ago, and their egos lead them to glorious "lightning" ride of fame and fortune. If you worship Metallica you shouldn't deny this fact you should just realize and live with it, buddy.

  • @DimwaDepenga dear friend the fact is NOT about making music which is not commercial and not easy to hear, but is about making SHITTY music, that's an equal thing,so people from all cultural level will think this album is garbage, yeah metallica today is democratic!!!

  • 15:07 LOL!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm so glad Lou is still upsetting those sad conservatives who want to stick every piece of music in a neatly labelled, easy-to-understand box!

  • 6/10? This is not an above average piece of work...awful vocals, boring arrangements, all around lazy compositions, terrible musicality, etc. Easily the worst metal effort of all time. This album deserves a negative integer.

  • i want TH1RT3EN

  • hahah I love how you got so excited when "The View" made sense.

  • wait, i totally love laurie anderson too. do you know the piece 'handphone table' ?

  • i like that you're laughing in a lot of your recent review openers. music is so funny nowadays. also, review the new weeknd tape bro. it's out.

  • i dont care what any of you "Metallica" fans say, i dont care that this isnt a solo studio release by the band, but this is a definite sign showing how they are selling out, just to make any money they can scrounge from the scraps of their fans

  • first listen to this album, i hated it, but after the second and third listen, it grew on me and i slowly started to love this album, i guess i was dissapointed that this wasnt a "METALLICA" album but i gotta give metallica and lou reed props for this collabaration, and to me this is on my top 5 fav albums of the year and i do hope that they will work on another album in the future.

  • I appreciate this album for all the amusing articles and discussions it has birthed :P

  • @louiscfc93 true its not a solo album. I do believe lou reed and metallica are equally responsible for the creation of this

  • is that an OFF! shirt?

  • i guess i'll listen to it one day...bring it to the table!

  • Gosh, every time I look up above the cover I see those little annotations that say nice things =) it makes me very happy.

  • I AM THE TABLE!

  • I'm not mad that this album was made, I just think it's bad. That's all.

  • what's next? Megadeth and Neil Diamond!!!!???

  • @tangleone I hope not

  • I still like Metallica and Lou Reed, I'm not the kind of person that immedately hates a band after they made a horrible album. But my humble opinion is that this album simply sucks. There is no catchy chorus im any song, the guitarwork is subpar for metallica and Lou Reed just doesn't belong in this kind of music. I still find the artists great, they just made a mistake.

I guess the bottomline of this review is don't hate a band after 1 album but try to look at Lulu with rosecolored glasses.

  • Review the new burzum 'compilation'

  • I sorta was upset hearing Lou Reed was doing this as a giant Lou/Velvet Underground fan.

    And not a Metallica fan....

But I kinda admire Lou's spirit doing this. like "Fuck you"

  • ace review though it sounded like a 7at least through my rose-tinted earphones ;)

you know what, you should really do a monthly re-review of lulu, if you are still listening to it that is :)

  • The other problem is that alot of Metallica fans cant get it into their heads that this is not a Metallica solo studio album.

  • Alot of Lou Reed fans are stuck up and alot of Metallica fans are idiots. So add the two together and you get the reception for this album

  • This isn't about "rock fans being angry" this is about an album that sounds like a total shit train-wreck. Metallica is thier usual "try to be too hard to be cool and relevant" vs just being. And I have no clue what Lou was thinking. It just doesn't work.

  • @whiteyanderson Trying too hard to be relevant? If they were desperate for relevance, the LAST person they would go to would be Lou Reed. No offense to him but he hasn't exactly been breaking album sales records lately.

  • The heavy editing is a poor method of hiding how crap you are at presenting a review.

  • Thoughtful review. Disappointing score.

  • Metallica should of done this acoustic.

  • Imagine if he done it with koRn

  • I almost feel like you're trolling us with that 6/10. Seriously? Come on!

  • I can't believe that Celestial Lineage by Wolves in the Throne Room got the same that Lulu got... it's just... really?

  • 3 shitty metallica albums in a row. This man is done listening to a band of hypocrites.

  • i hate you seriously, i regret watching

  • I don't often agree with reviews as completely as I do with this one. I wish the album were the masterpiece Lou and Metallica claimed it is, but considering that it's basically OK, I absolutely love how easily people were provoked into hating it. I've said it before and will say it again: nobody deserved this album more than Metallica fans.

  • Anthony In "THE DEFENDER OF LULU"

  • que pasaria si vuelve dave a metallica ?

  • Nice Dopethrone plug!!! :P

  • Did you review any of Black Mountain's albums?

  • Awesome review, dude. I can tell you are competent. The criticism on Lulu reminds in some ways of the one on Scream (Chris Cornell). These guys obviously don't do something like that to sell out, they do it because they can, well aware that it will piss off a lot of fans. And I agree that this album could have been a chance for some "quality CHAOS", like Sister Ray or The Blue Mask, but you know what? Both Lou and Metallica had already had a few failed attempts at that in recent times.

  • thanks, a fair review for a change. I am a lifelong Lou/VU fanatic and I didn't know what to make of this but upon a few listens, I actually love it. And not all Lou Reed fans are nose in the air snobs. I just love 90% of Lou's music better than anyone else. thanks for the objectivity

  • why listen to metallica when there is megadeth

  • Wait... so you gave this album, described by you as a poorly-executed troll record, the same grade you gave The King Of Limbs?

I'm not one of those Radiohead fanboys who venomously attacks any critic of theirs, but when a failed attempt at pissing people off is equal to a dichotomous, tense, concise, atmospheric, minimalistic masterpiece, I sure am left scratching my head.

  • Well done Needle drop. Thank you

  • Album - Peace of shit. Bye

  • @Janopooh *Piece =}

  • Just when i get to like Anthony's reviews, he gives 6/10 to this and Mastodon gets 5. Admittely, The Hunter is not a great record, but still its a very good, almost pop version of the band. But 6 for this ?

  • @sicrvat

    Because Mastodon is fucking shit?

  • @TopTenCrew true true

  • Sorry, but in my humble opinion, *you* are talking shit. You are advocating a commercialized style of music. You are advocating a sort of Justin-Bieber-Metallica. I am lucky: Metallica disappointed you, but surprised *me* :-)

  • Lars Ulrich shouldn't be allowed to hold drumsticks

  • This album also makes St. Anger look like Black Sabbath's Paranoid. THis album actually made me think St. Anger was a decent album

  • well if you ever want an impetus to ever commence your suicide, this would certainly make me want to kick the chair.

If this album is a great troll, is your review also a good troll? It has to be... you gave this piece of steaming pile of shit a higher rating than the new Mastodon album which you gave an offensive 5/10? Yes, you are right, Metallica and Lou Read created something unique; a unique clusterfuck that should have been scrapped early in the project.

  • FINALLY somebody who actually took the time to listen to the album, and gave a GOOD review of it.. This guy understands the album! Listen to this review, and give the album a listen, and pay attention to the things he said..

  • @5stringsab

you are fucking nuts to think that is a good album... name a high point of the album, i dare you too. There is absolutely no redeeming quality on any particular moment of this album. The whole thing should have been scrapped from the get-go. Every time this album gets played, a heavy metal god dies

  • @dbck74 Well, I listened to the album 2 times.. My favourite part must be junior dad.. Though the last part of the song is a bit boring imo.. I don't LIKE the album, but I understand the album.. It's creepy, weird, improvised, and it's meant to be like that.. It's not a fun record to listen, that's why I probably won't listen it again the next few weeks.. Atleast apreciete the fact that Metallica and Lou did something entirely DIFFERENT, instead of playing it save and POP

  • I like the album, I think it us something that will go down in music history and is one of the most challenging things I have heard. The atmosphere is very intense and dark and it's great. But I can't help thinking metallica held back in some parts.

  • anyone who liked death magnetic, loves this new album FACT!

  • @MurderNun

really, cause i liked death magnetic and absolutely loathe this album

  • I fail to comprehend how you think this album is better than The Hunter.

  • Light 6, I agree.

  • Go fuck yourself bra

  • I was looking forward to this release and the first few minutes I listened to it was enough conviction for me to say it was ordinary for a Metallica album lacks riffs and Lou Reed's poetry fucks the album right up. I hope their next album is much better than this. I admire Metallica's courage for doing this project didn't quite come off like the S&M album but Sorry, I HATE this album.

  • Anthony, could you please review Evile's latest release, "Five Serpent's Teeth"? It's an AMAZING new thrash album.

  • Hey, theneedledrop, many of the songs literally ARE the first takes. I heard 'tallica say so in an interview. It would have been nice if they would have put more effort into it and pieced stuff together better, but you're right, they probably just don't care.

  • @JoshTAnderson36 A lot of the album is also improv, just metallica doing stuff on the spot. Lou Reed said Lars must have some secret signal for them cause everyone would be right together and guitars would stop and then come back in at just the right moment and such. It gives me more respect for the guys knowing that. And as far as people saying the riffs are bland, let's see them write that shit on the spot first take. Plus they are probably saving their good stuff for their real album.

  • @TrollingYourButt Let's hope so! I have a lot of respect for Metallica and the risks they've taken for the sake of doing what they want. However, a lot of relatively closed minded people do not respect that and will continue to talk shit about Metallica for years to come unfortunately.

  • I hear people bitch about Lulu all the time. There are some parts of that album that are just mindblowingy good, but the rest of it.... idk. The great parts can't make up for the shit. Still, some very bright points. Anyway, I agree that 99% of people that malign the album so ferociously probably haven't listened to the whole thing. The whole thing is on the internet for crying out loud, you DON'T have to pirate it to listen to it.

  • My goodness I think I got stupider from listening to this album. Like, I think this album made saying 'I am the Table' a THING, and not particularly a very good THING. I swear BrokenCYDE and Ke$ha couldn't make a lazier album.

  • XD

  • When I first heard LULU I didn't even know who Lou Reed was. But from the first riffs I thought: wow this is AWESOME. So I started to search for positive reviews, because I was so sure that the whole world would love this album. So it came to me as a HUGE shock to realize that album is getting mixed reviews and DIE HARD METAL fans hate it. Until now I didn't even know that people can actually hate (good) music.

  • @Mrlauris1982 Metal fans (including myself) are typically music elitists and purists. I, however, see Lulu for it's artistic greatness and their noble attempt. There are some AMAZING riffs on the album. However, it's just too much of a jam session. If they would have spent more time piecing stuff together rather than the random ramblings in more than one song, it would be MUCH better. Lou's fucked up lyrics and vocals make it hard to get into the whole concept of the album too.

  • @JoshTAnderson36 It's Reed's of key fucked up vocals what makes this music fresh and interesting to me. It has it's own unique style. Feels like Reed just reinvented singing/declaiming and in some strange, odd way it just fits perfectly.

To all the LULU haters out there: just stick to the album you like the best and don't worry about this too much. ;)

  • @Mrlauris1982 Well I don't consider myself a Lulu hater. I love a lot about the album. Yes, to the Lulu haters, just don't listen to it. If you don't like it, oh well. They had fun making it.

  • @Mrlauris1982 me toooooooo

  • I AM THE TABLE!!!

  • @mayhem409

    Not Table but TABLET

    I AM THE ROOT

    I AM THE PROGRESS

    I’M THE AGGRESSOR

    I AM THE TABLET

    THESE TEN STORIES

  • is it just me, or does t guhisy kinda look like kirk hammett?

  • It would be admirable if they were doing their own thing if it was at least even the SLIGHTEST bit listenable. This shit is apathetic millionaires wiping their ass with your ears and laughing at you for listening. I prefer to listen to bands that TRY.

  • its unique alright

  • I will download this for free and give it a listen

  • @doomslayer133 I Did that and honestly it was not Great but it wasn't bad either there is a few highlights if you try to hear the beats without Lou Reed idiot spoken word vocals only on Iced Honey and Junior he sounds good: The songs i recommend are Pumping Blood, Iced Honey, Fustration, Junior Dad and maybe Dragon or BrandenBurg Gate

  • The big problem about Metallica is that started not caring what people thought about what they released. They made the music they wanted. That's fine BUT it was just not good. We don't all want another master of puppets. That would be redundant. What we want is that same visceral feel that we had when the intro the Battery came on. You felt soul and passion in their stuff. I don't get that with their new releases. I guess that's fine because Metallica doesn't care if I do.
