  • Being the man... ROFL!

I'm gonna pick Mushihimesama Futari up on eBay. But DAMN it's expensive! :'(

    OH WELL HERE I GO.

  • it's good to see someone giving attention to imports, people is all like "durr it should be sold on Xbox live no wonder it makes poor sales"

i wonder if you're going to review Espgaluda II Black Label, i'm playing it for a long time, but i like Futari more

  • This series is great! Please make more Substance TV!!

  • Bleh, I didn't really like Espgaluda, but I really do want to encourage Cave to keep pursuing their region-free policy... Decisions, decisions...

OTOH I loved the original Mushihime-sama on Maniac mode (wasn't very good at it though), and Futari is every bit as painfu^H^H^H^H^H^Hawesome. Will take a bit more work before I can get within the top 1,000 on the leaderboards though T_T

  • Awesome. Great narration, too. :) Great to see Cave get some exposition.

  • ive just been watching all ur vids after hearing about them on the forum i visit.

I must say u are my favorite games reviewer on you tube especially as the games u cover are all right down my street. I love the coverage of shmups and beat em ups most of all 10/10

just do me a favour dont mention deathsmiles when it comes out in the us as im so geen been in the uk :-)

  • Thanks man, glad you enjoyed. Yea, I here you guys in the UK get screwed as far as game releases. :(

BTW: What forum did you hear about us from?

  • At least they got the best version of Ico. I'm pretty miffed about that, considereing how amazing Ico is IMO. :( But they didn't get Chrono Trigger the first time either...

  • Your show should seriously be on TV. I just can't get enough of it! I just wish you would make them more often, although I bet it takes a while to edit the video to make it look so professional, cause it looks awesome, and coupled with your humor - Best gaming show ever!

  • @nastyguard007

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the support. Episode 12 (I hope) does not take as long to make as 11. Rest assured, it's in the works right now.

    -Erik

  • But if it was on TV, then it would suck, because awesome video game shows are banned on all TV :(

  • Yeah, the TV execs would push us to cover Halo 45 and Grand Theft Auto 21. AND they would change the host to one of the Jonas brothers. It could happen and I would cry.

    -Erik

  • That would suck.

On a sidenote, I wish Cave would release some of their games for the PS3. I know the 360 is more popular in Japan for arcade styled games, but I don't have a 360 :(. The PS3 is also region free, so that's another plus.

  • It is interesting that the 360 is the home Cave shooters this console generation. During the last console generation, the Sony PS2 was the king of Cave shmups.

I imagine the main reason they are not out for the PS3 is the cost and difficulty of programming the cell processors.

  • What about the Wii? I'm pretty sure that's easier to program for than the 360. And everyone owns a Wii in Japan, so I think that would sell more. I just want to be able to play a Cave shooter, is all :). I'm not really too interested in getting a 360 atm (and I don't have the spare change for it either).

  • What i heard is that microsoft actively went out and courted all the jap shmup developers that released games at that time for the dreamcast or ps2. A really well thought out move by MS to make the 360 the must have console for shmupping in a market that MS only have a small share of.

Shame MS arnt on the ball enough to bring more of the games to the west tho

  • That would explain Trigger Heart Exelica. That game seemingly came out of nowhere. Since the 360 is like the Dreamcast 2 (as far as I'm concerned), I'm hoping more of those Dreamcast games come to XBLA (Mars Matrix, Power Stone, Jet Grind Radio, and of course, Panzer Dragoon Saga...OK, that's a Saturn game, but it would be cool).

  • Thanks for the info. You're right, smart move by Microsoft, but as you said, bad move not to bring it to the West. Luckily we're getting Cave's Death Smiles Stateside. It was picked up by Aksys for publishing in the USA.

BTW: ESP Galuda II has just been announced as a region free release for the Xbox 360. Though this is only for the standard edition as the LE is still region locked. It comes out February 25th. More lovin' from Cave!

  • Totally pre-ordered my copy of ESP Galuda II!

  • Yes, good job my friend. Pre-ordered mine as well. Cave loves us oh so much.

BTW: I can guarantee you ESP Galuda II will be in a future episode of Substance TV.

  • Are you going to review Death Smiles (the horizontal Cave shmup that's going to be released in the US)?

BTW, who's doing the ESPGaluda II port? Is it going to be M2 (the guys who did the Mushihimeblablabla port)? Because those guys are great (they made Monster World Collection :)).

  • @jedahdoma What do you think of the game compared to the first ESP Galuda? And a minor question, but in the first game, I noticed some enemies died in a pool of blood, which I thought was pretty cool. Are there any enemies like that in the sequel?

  • Out of curiosity, what version of Mushihimisama Futari do you have (Limited, first run, or standard)?

  • I only have the standard edition. :(

  • Hey Brian, nice show as always.

I was wondering if you could possibly incorporate some reviews of Turbografx games in the future. It is my favorite system and I feel that it often times doesn't get the attention it deserves.

    Thanks!

  • @Chantumon

Yes indeed. There are a few Turbo Grafx games in our upcoming lineup of episodes. After reading you're comment, I think we can rearrange our schedule a bit. ;) Thanks.

    -Erik

  • Took the words right out of my mouth! :)

Yes, we've had a few Turbo Grafx games on our mind, but you're right, we've not given any lovin' to the Turbo Grafx or PC Engine. As Erik said, that's something we'll be changing. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Isn't Shinobi 3 the 4th game in the series?

If you include Shadow Dancer? (and you should)

  • great show cant wait for another episode

  • I like the show. I think you have a great voice for this and you got some nice editing in there. Not sure how this is called, but it does look professional.

But something feels weird. It feels extremely standard. Lots of "literary style" words, but ultimately devoid of any soul. You always say the same things too. Your reviews are as normal as they can get.

I guess what I want to say is that there's nothing special, there's nothing to stand out. It's... bland.

    It's not bad though...

  • Seriously, Mushihimesama Futari is TOTALLY worth picking up. I recommend getting an arcade stick as well to play it for that authentic experience (plus the 360 gamepad just plain sucks for those kinds of games).

  • I couldn't agree more, an arcade stick is a must when it comes to shmups. For those used to playing on the 360 pad, you'll notice a dramatic improvement in your skills.

  • Why is that? It's a shmup, controls aren't really incredibly important... (unless they absolutely suck). The 360 analogue stick is probably good enough for most.

  • I couldn't disagree more. With all the bullets headed your way, you'll need the best controls possible. The analog stick is average in my opinion. The best shmup tournament players use joystick because they are reliable with tight controls. I would give it a try sometime. You may be surprised. :)

  • Well, yeah, that's why I said good for most :). Most people aren't shmup tournament players.

  • and also because I think arcade sticks are more important for fighting games, like SFIV.

  • They're also more important for shmups as well. That's why the tournament players use them. You don't see tournament SFIV players using a 360 controller do you?

  • This is oh so true my friend.

  • Hey, I'm just saying that the game will probably be playable, even if not in the best form. SFIV is very hard to enjoy without your prefered controller expirience. And not everyone is a tournament player.

  • @anupsanju It's playable, but I'm just arguing that these kinds of games really are best played with an arcade stick. They're designed to be played with one right from the get go, just like fighting games are.

  • Not really;haven't you played any console only shmups for the SNES, Genesis, TG16, Saturn, PSX, etc.? Or are you talking about Cave shmups? Because you're probably right about the latter.

  • O god I played Konoa. I got really bored really fast

  • You have not given it a chance. Do NOT judge the game by the first hour or two. The difficulty curve is mad so that it is maddingly easy (maybe even boring to...some people), but it ramps up nicely and gets much better. Then again, if you don't give it a chance, you're only missing out.

  • @anupsanju : Thats actually true I got bored. But I cant go any further because my wii exploded and I sent it in for repairs lol

  • GREAT episode guys! I'll always have a soft spot for Shinobi 3 and Klonoa 2. I've only played the PS2 port of Mushihimesama, but the 360 version looks incredible.

  • It´s a good thing I got myself a 360 pretty recently, since I think I´ll check out those games available for it. Hopefully there´s a demo to try out... I´m not too sure of shoot ´em ups...(yeah, I refuse calling them by the other name) my kind is the original type like R-type, Ikaruga or Gradius. The dodge bullets and a million bullets vs one continue isn´t my cup of tea really... but I´ll try it out anyways, to see if I can handle it.

  • The game looks daunting, but don't let that scare you. Like I said in the review, there is a novice mode that will introduce you to the gameplay system without throwing a billion bullets your way. Even the more bullet ridden modes, such as Arrange, look difficult, but in reality it's all about learning how to play he game. In fact Arrange is one of the easiest modes. And like any game you see others play well, it takes a little time to learn, but you can also master those skills. Best of luck!

  • Thanks! Well, just got to add those points then I guess.

  • shinobi 3 is awesome!

  • Vision - "COMIC BOOKS!"

Yeeeaahhh! We're done at last! On to number 12, but holy crap there's been a lot games that have come out lately. NO TIME! Stuck on Muramasa and Tatsunoku vs. Capcom and well, to many to name.

Thanks everyone for your great input.

    -Erik "The graphics guy"

    Erik

  • Great episode! It was full of games that I've played & loved and have & should play.

  • good work!

  • Good show as always guys! Worth the wait!

I have Shinobi III on the Genesis and I agree that its one of the best Genesis titles ever! Its one of my top favorites at least.

  • I love this show SO much! Every time a new episode comes out I have to ebay at least two new games.

  • If we don't end up making you poor by the end of an episode, well then we just haven't done our job. :)

  • Also, if anyone doubts the amount of content contained in the game, each of those game types (1.5, Arrange, 1.01, Black Label) are divided into the subsections Original, Maniac, and Ultra/God, each of which have their own unique rulesets and bullet patterns. for example, 1.5 / BL Original gets harder the better you do, while Maniac's difficulty is the same every time. Maniac involves Dodonpachi style chaining, while original involves switching between shot types at different score levels, etc.

  • Glad to see you cover Mushi Futari, it's without a doubt one of the finest games I've ever played, up there with Mario World, Chrono Trigger + Cross, and Super Mario Kart which are my other all time faves. For people on the fence about getting it: it really is the finest shoot-em-up out there, and if you have ever really liked one you owe it to yourself to get it. I love Ikaruga / Blazing Lazers etc, but Futari absolutely demolishes them. The only shmup I enjoy close to as much is Mars Matrix.

  • So many great games reviewed and so many more still out there. No wonder these are only once in a while. By the way ever hear of a game called The Legend of Dragoon?

  • Another great episode. I really liked Klonoa 2 being there as, regardless of me just playing the Wiimake of the original, I think is a good franchise that needs some acknowledgment. Keep up the good work, sir.

  • What do you use to edit?

  • I use Adobe Premiere CS3.

  • Too bad Mushihimesama is so expensive. When there are so many cheaper shmups in the US (Ikaruga, Blazing Lazers, MUSHA, Gradius II, etc.), it's hard to spend $(I think 70? Maybe 80) dollars on a shmup. I honestly feel it could've been released as an XBLA/PSN shmup.

  • It's is expensive, I won't deny that, but as I said in the review, it is well worth the money. I personally enjoy seeing a retail release of this game. Having a tangible product makes the deal. Plus, compared to buying the arcade game, there's no question which is the better deal. Trust me, you'll enjoy this, and past that, you won't find another shmup like it.

  • i dont think that last game gave me a big enough seizure lol

congrats on the new ep brian i will inform you on when my new written reviews are up and all my old reviews have been retyped so scan over them sometime

  • Damn good stuff boys, linked the episode on our homepage. Sucks I wasn't able to beat you to the punch, getting out a review of Mushi, but I need to get an AV Splitter because the input lag makes playing the game impossible.

  • YAY!!

    It's finally up!

  • This episode was awesome!!! I love the way you do the stuff now! The man stuff was pretty funny. :P

For further episodes of substance tv, I'd suggest a scoring system, and perhaps some games that aren't all that great, because every episode has good games, makes it seem like you like everything. Also as I said before, PC games. Also you could have a meter for how difficult the game is.

    and oddworld...

  • I forgot to say that the quality wasn't really top notch. Perhaps this could just be my PC.

  • Yea, that's YouTube for ya. The video is still processing so it won't be the best quality ATM. Come back in a few hours once they finish processing everything and it will be much better.

  • Good watch. That SHMUP is insane. Bullet hell at its finest.

  • Mushihimesame Futari looks insane. The soundtrack sounds pretty kickass too.
