Smaug could have had an echo effect added but the puppet is freaking epic.

Yes -- That was a puppet! It required 3 people to work in unison to operate it - One in the head/body to operate Smaug's mouth, and a person on each wing that was constructed on a pulley system.
It's amazing in the video but it was truly majestic in person on the stage.
