  • I'm trying to make one of these out of ebony and quartz.

The spindle is a thin ebony pin, maybe 4mm wide, and the whorl is a quartz pebble.

I have yet to find any cotton, however.

  • Thank you for the compliment. I enjoy teaching.

  • Your videos are sooooo helpful. I find myself always coming back to your site. You cover every point, and all as if we are all sitting with you in your living room. Thank you so much!

  • Today i made a supported hand spindle, and made a video, tho i need to post it. it spins nicely, i made it from a chopstick and a round 3 inch in diameter wooden circle that i also made.

  • @Twilight101cp Good for you. The chop stick may be a "lot" heavy and not round - if this isn't satisfactory try one of the bamboo "skewers" - a bead can be a good whorl too. Good luck. Can't wait to see your video, let me know when you post it.

  • @Spin2Weave it should be up- i posted it not sure if its live yet. Go to my channel and it should be there

  • I'm new to this and don't even have a spindle yet or carders or nuthin. But these vids are super helpful. I'm 11 and I LOVE doing stuff with yarn, and crochet ( I have no idea how to knit, i need to learn ^.^) and these vids are awesome. I've always wanted to go to Arizona.

  • @Twilight101cp You can buy roving and a hand spindle and you'll be ready to start, don't need the carder etc with prepared roving. That's all many people ever use. There is a list at Yahoo for spindlers - lots of active members. I love to spindle, it's very portable and you really can get a lot done if you keep at it. In Bible times, and before, that's all they had to spin everything they needed for weaving cloth of all kinds.

  • Like the idea of cutting in some silk to the cotton!

I find that spinning in a bowl held between my knees is most comfortable and efficient. And I agree that with practice, the spinning should be smooth without any stops or starts.

  • I love your videos, you are so good at demonstrating exactly what I am interested in. Thank you

  • Thanks for the videos, they're really helpful. I can't wait to get my support spindle!

I'm wondering where you got your Takli though with the brass whorl and who made it?

  • Thank you! This helped so much. I am taking a cotton hand spindle in to my class of kids to try, and the tips were beneficial!

  • That's really helpful to see it being spun! Thank you for putting this on here.
