(to danimations80) I thought False Bay was already protected for ALL cephalopods? I'm not sure what the punishment is but it's pretty extreme. And could you get a bigger protection area? It's pretty much the whole area between eyre peninsula and yorke peninsula. But oh well, it's a pretty damn good cause.

@XzoahX well the tentacles of cuttlefish, octopi, and squid are just pure muscles and once it has at least three arms on you it wont let go, or thats what i heard from my professor on a presentation
@XzoahX theres only one type of Cuttlefish that can really do any real damage to a human and their os small youd have to swallow one to have anything happen, the Flamboyant Cuttlefish, they dont usually ttry using their color-changing to HIDE, they use it to warn things their highly venomous, its of ocurse probably one of the smallest species of Cuttlefish, they could fit in the palm of your hand their so small
@XzoahX you see those 2 tentacles in the V-shape my friend? its telling you to get away or its going to attack you, its their defensive display, its how they say "Back the F off" to other animals
@ig88bc The "W" shaped pupils of a cuttlefish's eyes are actually due to convergent evolution. Cephalopod eyes evolved in parallel with the eyes that you and I have, and the structure of their eyes, although similar to our own, is completely different. Cephalopod eyes are superior to ours in many ways, featuring highly sensitive colour vision, no blind spots, and greater photosensitivity.
Just a bit of useless information for you, there. :P
@Kiltmaster "the structure of there eyes, although similar to our own, is completely different." ? So which one is it?
"The "W" shaped pupils of a cuttlefish's eyes are actually due to convergent evolution." Convergent with what? Ours? We don't have w shaped eyes. Convergent evolution is where two organisms evolve to look the same independently what dose that have to do with w shaped eyes?
It's scared because you have it surrounded. Freaking out nature is fun until it eats you! I don't think anyone's been attacked by a cuttlefish....but the internet knows...I'm going to find out...
This is the most beautiful sepia I have ever seen!!! I know probably his pose is meant to ward of potential enemies, but to me he soooo looks like he's posing for the camera, eyes closed and relaxed.... what a beauty!
Why are they called a fish? They're not really a fish, are they???!!! (Everyone notice how I used the correct form of they're (they are) above... just thought it deserved some attention since most don't get it right :-D ha!
@squito94 i guess that its trying to immitate bright colors because it usually means bright colors = poisonous so dont eat me...for all i know the Flamboyant cuttlefish which is the smallest is the only poisonous one
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
once you eat it or once they disect it for researh or wateva they should find out how they do that camoflague thing and try to breed it with another animal maby a mimic octopus that would be cool i would pay for 1 of those a mimic octopus that can mimic stuff and change its body color and texture so cool
Oh, he's not sleeping. I've seen a few cuttlefish do that, It might be a defensive posture or something? Also, I don't think they'd taste that wonderful... Or they'd be too chewy for me. I'm not a fan of squid and octopus as it is, but I wouldn't want to eat a cuttlefish. They're too intelligent, it'd be a waste.
they taste good.. grill it and put some spices inside.. try to grill it for few minutes at least 20 mins. per side, that way they are soft to eat and not chewy.
BEAUTIFUL! This is excellent footage. What a huge cuttlefish. It's so neat that you were able to get up close and personal like that. Cool! Thanks for sharing...
why is it just hanging there? usually they are pissed off at first and then get curious. But I guess you could hypothosize (can't spell, don't care) that they have distinct personalities, and thus reactions to things. Interesting little guy
lol he's giving you the peace sign but I know that all that means is that he sees you as the predator and wants you to go away lol still I love the color to him :)
Cuttlefish have been known to make their way through a maze in science laboratories. scientists have studied cuttlefish intelligence and it has been proven that they can even distinguish different between different colors and puzzles.
It is probably trying to scare the divers away. And it probably won't hide itself because he is smart enough to understand that the divers was no threat.
And last, the cuttlefish have a special type of eye that looks like an "W". I'm not quite sure why, but the cuttlefish has one of the best eye sights in the ocean. (I don't know if it can sleep, most fish don't.)
Why bother to make a fake out of this? There are lots of images like this in docummentaries, and this is a home made video. I don´t think it´s fake...
Cuttlefish only use their camouflage when necessary, like when it's hiding from predators or lying in wait for prey. This one not only wasn't hiding but is brightly colored, I wonder if it was mating season?
Depending on how frequently divers are in the area the cuttlefish may be accustomed to people and not see humans as a threat.
actually, cuttlefish can't see color, just texture and pattern. so they have no idea what color to turn, they just know about how dark or light they should be.
They aren't totally colorblind though their color vision is much more limited than humans though they can detect the polarization of light which us humans can't so there's a lot about their vision and camouflage abilities that we don't understand.
What does that have to do with anything, i don't care at all about this fish or whatever any of you guys think, i just stated what it looked like to me so don't get all butt hurt about it, damn, who gives a hell anyways its just a fish so drop it.
It's actually a cephalopod..related to squid and octopus :) sometimes species are named before scientists find out what they're related to. If I had a say about it I'd name it mini-cthulhu.
