Gas House Gang will forever be my favorite quartet, but I agree that you can hear maturity in Jim's voice in his work with Crossroads. That is not an insult.....he's amazing with GHG...and well, beyond words with Crossroads.
What? How the hell can my comment get thumbs down? I'm just saying that I think he comes out better with crossroads than he did with the gas house gang. His voice has obviously grown since then. So that's not a bold statement for me to make, or is it?
I don't think your comment read that way man, it sounded like you didn't know Jim was with GHG or something. I got it, but I had to ask to clarify-no worries.
Man, I love this quartet, and I love their style, but I'm not sure I like their interpretation on this one. Consider the origins of the song. The melody part here is singing with feeling, but the feeling is upbeat and snazzy. Not exactly the message of the song if you think about the lyrics and put them into context.
Alright, fair enough. I just don't like the bass in this performance. He's got no resonance in his lower range and would not be considered a bass at all by the standards of choral practice.
I also have a little bit of beef with most people that sing this song because none of them can hit the last note. This example is no exception; he is nearly a quarter-tone sharp on the final note of this song. I'm not sure I understand why every bass feels obligated to sing it even if they can't...
All valid points as far as style, etc. is concerned. Jim Henry has good resonance in his lower range for being a baritone (what it sounds like you consider him to be). I've sung with the man. He has an F two octaves below middle c with great clarity and resonance-check out lazy day. So he could be considered a choral bass, but maybe not an opera bass? I'm not terribly sure about the differences. Not arguing, just chucking in my personal experience with him.
No, you're right, if he can hit a low F, he's a bass. I was just thinking he would benefit from a lower range here. I meant no offense concerning his talent. Most of my initial learning of barbershop bass came from listening to Gas House Gang songs like Bright Was the Night. I just didn't really feel like this song suited him best.
That said, I've done a little research on Tennessee Earnie Ford and this is pretty true to the original hit other than Jim's sound being a little darker.
Yeah I know, the first thing I looked up when I saw this discussion arise was the original videos. No offense was taken, he's not built like some of the mutants out there that can hit the ridiculously low notes with disgusting ease but Jim is good at what he does. I also picked barbershop up from the Gas House Gang. The song fits his showman ship, but probably not the range-I'd agree.
All around great quartet. I was fortunate enough to be able to sing a tag with them a few years ago after they performed at the the Buckeye Invitational. It was awesome.
I appreciate the helpful video info - Best Regards coming from West Palm Beach Florida

If you listen to some of Jim Henry's work in crossroads he has a good resonance in his lower register.
