it's awesome to know every turn, every curve and every piece of this track thanks to Gran Turismo 4. Thanks GT4! If I ever get my car there I'll be comfy as a kitten like I'd driven it 1000 times...haha.
Love the motor. Lingenfelter has some amazing potent kits for this motor. They have a 475hp, 530hp and 610hp packages for the LT5.
The LT5 block is basically an aluminum L98 block, but almost everything else is different. DOHC, and 32 valves. The motor was designed by Lotus and was built by Mercury Marine. It was a very expensive motor to make and it was the only OHC V8 Chevy has used [not 100% sure, but I think so]
A majority of the time the people who talk shit on the comment are people who catch buses or ride in taxis everthing they know they read in a magazine, this video is hot and he not even pushing it to the limit he just toying with the speed of this beast.
For those who can't seem to find the information that is already on this page:
"Part of a lap at the Nurburgring in my 1991 C4 ZR1, not very fast as it is only my 4th lap, I eventually get fed up following the Porsche and try to keep up with the BMW that goes past."
The LT5 is not simply a LT4 with quad cams. The LT5 was engineered by Lotus and entirely different than the LT1 and the LT4 (which was just a buffed up LT1). LT1 engines were cast iron, not full on aluminum like the LT5's were. The LT5 was much closer in basic design to the L98 if anything, but engineered way more competently. Best motor made until the later LSX architecture. For their age, those cars and engines were bad ass. They still are today.
Not quite, in fact, not close.. GM owned Lotus at the time, and Corvette approached Lotus to assist with the design of the fastest production car in the world. Over four years both Lotus and GM designed the engine which was eventually assembled in the US by Mercury Marine at Stillwater. So, Lotus had an important input; the DOHC in particular, but they certainly did not 'engineer the entire motor start to finish'
Were did in the F*%#@ did you get that this was basically an L98 block? This is asnentirely different motor. Not one part was used fro the l98 except fuel injectors, but instead of 8 there are 16. I own one and it is a terrific motor.
@Artuir82 Not totally true. The reason the LT5 got the LT designation is because it shared the 4.4 inch bore spacing with previous LT engines. The first LT engine was the 1970 LT-1, the next was the LT1 II with reverse cooling & some parts are interchangeable. The LT5 was engineered by a team headed by Mercury Marine Project Engineer Terry D. Stinson & only the 32-valve DOHC heads were designed by Lotus.
@Artuir82 You're welcome. It's an interesting history because while many believe the LT5 is dead nothing could be further from the truth. Much of the technology that went into the LT5's heads later went into the Cadillac Northstar engines. One could even go so far as to say that the LT5 motor is the granddaddy of the Northstar motors & when Carole Shelby went looking for an engine for the Shelby series 1 it was not surprising to me that he chose a Northstar engine & then later supercharged it.
A zr-1 did 7:40 on a wet track with an ammature driver (I believe it was an engineer for GM or something). Dry with a race driver it will blow away the nissan, bugatti, and other cars in its class.
Rite on wkjeepguy24, that's what I was thinking, an old C4 ZR-1, there is no supercharger whine !! Plus that older hood looked familiar , we used to have an '85 C-4.
What a hand full , amazingly qwick but the steering was very scary, like totaly wrong!! Had lots of fun in the 80's SMOKING all of the MUSTANGS I could find!!!!! KOOL VIDEO , THX

The engineers at GM are brilliant. The new ZR1 comes with a plexiglass window on the hood. This way when you blow a rod, which frequently happens with vettes, you'll only need to replace the window as opposed to the entire hood.
hahahah omg dude ur a moron. do u actually think thats why they put a plexi glass window???? no its to show off the super charger... but ur right on one thing... they are brilliant
Hey now! As an owner of a '91 ZR-1... I agree.....That car is screaming to be opened up. But then again... I personally wouldn't want to wreck my ride!!
Yeah - low 40's with engineers driving and on a damp track. They're probably waiting for the Corvette drivers to get a break from winning races to come run it hard. And Chevy does standing starts, Nissan does flying starts. And nissan spent weeks prepping their drivers at the Ring, Jan had one day in the ZO6. Probably not a 7:25, but def in the low 30s.
They are scared of losing. Every car does flying starts when getting a lap time. Due to short finish line take off 2 or 3 sec and its still very slow to the gtr. Btw German car companies tune their production cars for months on the nurburgring.
Got some real smart ones here. That's a C4, 90-95 ZR-1. The ZR1, lacking the dash, is the C6 platform supercharged LS9 beast we'll be seeing soon. The C4 ZR-1 was powered by the LT5, quad cam 32 valve that put down 375 to 405 HP depending on the year.
agreed.. this is a 94 or 95 405HP 4CAM 32 valve "ZR-1" not the 08 620+HP supercharged "ZR1" Furthermore both lingenfilter & Callaway already got hold of a few and made some blazingly fast versions including a 780+ HP twin turbo super Speedster.
if they exact more power it goes agianst everything they are about,gm guys dont wanna take away from the historical feel of there cars plus it is not needed, why do that when they can get u 2 buy an LSX motor that is rated to 2200hp.. it is business if u sell a car that powerful u are basically battling yourself
lol u guys dont get it the point of have a V8 is so we dont have 2 beef up hp-per cyl it is so we make good power in a calm fashion chevy cold easily beef out there motors and have them make insane numbers but then wat fun is it 2 tune and drive it
well, they could have sucked more horse power out of the engine.. no doubt, but then the power would overcome the back wheels so there would be no sense unless you put racing slicks on it.. besides, low 3 second 0-60.. 200mph+ top speed? this is not a slow car.. over 1G cornering force? seriously you honda KIDS need to take a second look at this, and i cant wait until lingenfelter gets a hold of it
I duno maybe they didn't want everyone driving around in 1000 hp cars???? the point is that everytime there is a discussion about American V8 engines and Japanese I4s, the HP per cylinder card is always pulled
which in everyday driving means nothing... My ls1 Trans Am will still smoke that s2000 from a light even though it's engine is more "efficient" then mine....
And what makes you think that GM can't extract more power out of the LS3??? Besides i doubt that you will be able to get anymore power out of that measly honda engine without forced induction because it's maxed out already.
I think you guys are getting a little off-topic. Look, there are more changes to this car(carbonfiber roof, carbon ceramic brakes, shorter 1st longer 6th,ect.) than any tuner shop or "backyard mech." could ever do.You'll see why they went this route when the test # come up.Oh, and the s2000 does so at 9000 rpm people seem to forget that when comparing small and large dis. engines.Check her power at 3000 rpm and you can compare.
I agree just stating that no DOHC motor has achieved the hp numbers OHVs have if so please enlighten me (7000-8000hp). Also in case u didnt know crf is the designated name for hondas offroad mx bikes I'm a huge fan of honda and love DOHC motors such as the K20 just supporting our domestic market. However by built for boost I meant that those motors have high comp pistons and would give out under high boost. Besides there all hp and no torque typical of a top end bias motor.
The new ZR1 is built for boost where the old one obviously isn't, meaning it has far more potential for hp boost/increases compared to an N/A cars from the factory. Besides the old ZR1 motor was difficult to work on and far more moving parts prone to failure. Push rod motors are still proven and able to hold way more power than any DOHC motor by design. Both awesome cars...
s/c a car, and engeneering a car for 650hp are 2 totally different things. The s/c on this car is only a small part of the improvements done to this car. That's the difference between this and any tuner car, including lingenfilter. These engineers are some of the best in the world, no comparison to any tuner shop.
I was an test driver on the ZR-1 program back in 1989, and I have to agree that there's nothing like the sounds of 4 cams, 32 valves and that induction system to stir your soul.
I experienced the car at 175 in the high banks at Talladega and on the road course, but nothing would compare to lapping "The Ring" in one.
This is on my list of things to do before I die...
This is not a new car. This is a ZR-1, which was made between 1990-1995. They made 6939 ZR-1s during that time. They all came with an all aluminum 350ci, 4 cam, 32 valve V-8. This engine produced 375hp/370lb/ft or 405hp/380lb/ft depending on the year.
You can find on of these here in the USA between $15000-$50000 US Dollars depending on the condition, mileage, repairs and or modifications.
ahh i found that out to online!.. but driving it is just a little bit.. oh i dont know, different.. maybe the guy in the porsche has done it more times.. i do know for a FACT!! you would be awsome!!! just don't fight your dad while you are driving it. i know for myself i lost it in turn 7
The base C6 is supposedly faster, and the C6 Z06 is much faster. Arguably the C5 Z06 is quicker, but that depends entirely on the drivers and the day.
All in all I would buy a ZR-1 over any other Corvette. Not because of the low production, but because nothing sounds like an LT5 at 7000rpm.
it's awesome to know every turn, every curve and every piece of this track thanks to Gran Turismo 4. Thanks GT4! If I ever get my car there I'll be comfy as a kitten like I'd driven it 1000 times...haha.

gotta love zr-1's. the lt5 was soooooo far head of its time. great engine. great car. king of the hill (and yes i know the c6 z06 is faster)

You are right about it still being the King of the Hill.
I am glad that people are starting to post videos of ZR-1s up here. Not many people know how special these cars are. Thank you #262!
