Syd was quite obviously mentally ill. The drugs just made it seem like normal LSD tripping out behaviour. I think by this point he probably didn't want to be a pop star at all.

We all think its sad that he gave it all up, but maybe it was what he wanted.

I actually must disagree - from what I've read pre-breakdown Syd was quite the ladies man - he was a natural extrovert, physically beautiful, charismatic and talented and he knew it. He had many girlfriends - girls were very fond of him and he enjoyed their company. Post-breakdown Syd is another story. By 1972 he'd already had his breakdown - he was no longer the extrovert he once was and was becoming quite a private person and reclusive.
