You heard him surely, I heard him in house a few times myself starting in 1972 as Don Jose but it was not a big voice at all compared to say corelli or tucker but he was a musician and an intelligent singer. I like his recording of canio, especially his vesti la giubba. The guy is amazing for a variety of roles.
Mingo's actually not that bad here, though as usual he sounds distant and has very unclear diction which for me makes him unlistenable. I don't understand why he's so popular when there are far better tenors out there. He's not even in my top ten.
Domingo's is the most beautiful voice to have recorded this great aria, not excepting Patzak, Heppner, King, Roswaenge. Of my favorite Florestans, Vickers and McCracken had more sheer power, which combined with their sensitivity to the text to make their renditions magnificent. But Domingo isn't significantly behind them.
If he lacked overwhelming power -- well, by all accounts I've read, Domingo's vocal size and thrust were were well beyond merely ample:) --
i have the fealing he can sing nearly everything and it sounds great
there is video of Gedda singing this aria, he is great zoo of course but he is not a dramatic tenor and thats the great with domingo. he can sing all roles
I used to have this in VHS form about..9 or 10 years ago. It was my very first encounter with opera, and I love the whole program! I think I'll purchase this in DVD form again. Placido is just amazing! He show you the magic of opera!

@VinylToVideo Perhaps I commented too hastily before hearing the horrible final minute and a half.

I absolutely adore this, even if I am "strictly Jose Carreras fan", but this is so sad and beautiful, such a touching performance...
