  • I'd love to see a remake and or re-release of this game for modern PC's. IF they could get details back then, I'm sure it can be done now!

  • Damn, I just had to miss this game by a decade. I came across this while looking up games set in SF and well, I end up reading about Vette's then-"unheard of" features and I just had to see it for myself. It looks really good for an 89' computer game and it kinda makes me feel that we take those gameplay elements for granted nowadays. Great job on this video man.

  • Wow, what a robust game.

  • Ahhhhhh good old pc sound xD... I don't even remember what it's called anymore...

  • well done.

  • Great reviews bro, keep the good work.Loved that you used the background music of the first need for speed, that music brings memories!.Good job ;)

  • the title looks like Vettel

  • Very nice vid. Reminds me a lot of memories.

  • You are a great ... i was 14th in 1989 and i plaied a lot of our to this game ... The first one that permit you to kill pedestrians ... it's' the father of Carmageddon

  • Another great review! :)

  • this probably looked bad ass a shit load of years ago.

  • not mentioned: 2-player mode has a Tag game, in which you have to track down and crash into your opponent. And there were some Easter eggs, such as driving into Alameda (across the bay bridge) to see the Spectrum Holobyte offices... it was a great place to hide when playing tag.

  • Wow. This was sure a game ahead of its time... and amazing how much paper it had!

  • haha i thought this game was some obscure shit that nobody else knew about

i bought a CD with a bunch of games at Office Depot maybe 15 years ago, and this was one of the games on the CD

  • hahAha

  • Your reviews are consistently classic. Found you via 'Blood' and 'Shadow Warrior' then 'Stunts' and now this. Great sardonic trips down memory lane (FYI loved the tow truck inserts). Can't wait to see the rest of your reviews.

  • dang. gotta remember the old days

  • LOL!!! I thought this was the most amazing thing I ever saw when this game first came out!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers this!!!

  • I got a map of L.A. when I bought Midnight Club L.A.

  • Hold k while driving to keep the car straight.

  • 3:38

    ROFL!

  • Vette's are badass! ;D

  • Still worth playing though

  • I remember playing this game quite a bit mainly because I figured u wouldn't get lost when I actually went

But when I went to San fransisco I got lost anyway

  • Wow you reviewed Vette and Stunt Driver? Two of my favorite games from childhood. Awesome, thanks for this!

  • Wow, I was clearing out some old magazines today and looked through a few and saw a review of this game and was shocked to see polygonal graphics in 1989, in addition to all the features and controls. Looked it up on youtube and found this excellent review.

Very impressive stuff for a 386 game, but maybe even more impressive was that in a few years Papyrus released Nascar for 486 pcs, which was my first pc racing game and pretty damn good.

  • lol you almost sound like the computer generated speech =D

  • gta iv its inspires for vette this game it free word !!!!!

  • man these make sick its the momement

  • 3:39

    the irony.

  • I can't get the car to move, I awnsered the question right.

  • @boobidee Did you shift out of neutral? Are the controls set properly?

  • @phreakindee I did not shift. Thank you.

  • I used to love this game on the old 386

  • the world famous San Fransisco gas station lol

  • never seen this awsome lol

  • I remember playing this game as a kid, it was great. For it's time, it had a surprisingly large area and map.

  • this game looks like babyes made it

  • @eluabs Ironically, so does your comment.

  • @phreakindee im just sayn :) btw u are good a rewiewing games.....at least i watch u comment sims

  • Alright... what is your excuse?

I was going with the flow of traffic (252MPH in the opposite lane =P)

    Okay don't it happen again

  • Open world driving games, the first I would think of?

    Hmmm... Stunts!

  • what an ambitious game for its time. Too bad about the sound, may be an amiga version would have fixed that. Not sure it had the processor capacity to handle this game though.

Your reviews are top notch, informative, funny, I love them.

  • I used to have the MAC version f this game for my LC. The graphics and Sound were INCREDIBLE. Real engine sound, and the intro had some great music. If you can find it, I would highly recommend it on the Mac.

  • ftw!

  • Spectrum Holobyte ftw!!

  • look like a nice game

  • LMFA0o0 phreakindee this is your funniest review L0LLL all the way up going to the engine sound L0LLLLLLLLL

  • omfg :D This game is baaaad :O

  • Great game, love the attitude. Thanks D.

  • Man, to get those kind of extra goodies with a game these days you have to like, PRE-ORDER the SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S LIMITED EXCLUSIVE EDITION.

  • oops nevermind its corvettes hence vette, i didnt watch it yet when i posted that , duh

  • sounds italian, is that because there are italian sportscars

  • Great review, as always :) Thanks!!!

  • @phreakindee Well anyway most people probably got it already... mine arrived a day early but it wasn't the Limited Edition D:

  • LMAO! Toyota sucks ass!!!!

  • As far as early driving games is concerned, I always preferred those with 2D images like Test Drive and Test Drive II over those with 3D graphics like Test Drive III, and yes, Vette. The problem is that they had to go through a lot of trouble to make the all the 3D info fit into so little space that they had to slim it down as much as possible. At the end I would really dislike the graphics so I wouldn't see much of a point unless technology to support it could improve.

  • I remember the first Test Drive on the old Commodore Amiga. That was my first racing game...well either that or Rad Racer on the NES, can't remember which one I got first.

  • Great review! Glad to see it wasn't a, "Omg Grand theft auto has 432489038901238 times better graphics!" I love the early anti-piracy, gotta feel bad for the dude who loses his owner's manual among their other 500 books for DOS, Windows, Other games, and possibly some older BASIC computers like most people had.

  • this is way ahead of it's time

  • Looks like a cool enough game, and strangely one I was completely oblivious to. I thought I knew about all the old racing games. Support for multiplayer is a great feature for such an old game, but no support for sound other than PC speaker is really bad. For the old time classic racing game I still prefer Street Rod or stunts, but I will definitely give this one a spin. Right after I'm done playing Gran Turismo 5 :)

  • Reminds me of Street Rod.-

  • They don't make game covers like they used to... oh well. Reviewing NFS HP anytime soon? :P

  • Awesome game and a great review! But in my opinion Test Drive III was the best open world racing game for pc.

  • You continue to impress me -- you're the only person who gives these games the treatment they deserve (other than me, but you're doing a better job that I have in recent years). Massive kudos for recognizing Vette! as the innovator it was. I have started to actively look forward to your reviews now. Keep up the great work!

  • Great review here Clint, another great DOS classic = )

  • The graphics remind me of a flight simulator that never gets off the ground.

  • Mostly right about the extras, today most of the nice stuff is exclusive to super-expensive "Collector's Editions" while the PDF-manual-only-approach seems to be the new norm. So the game I pay for is of lesser quality than the illegal copies on P2P (thanks to online-activation and other DRM shit) AND I don't get any extra content for my money either? And those idiots are wondering why PC games are losing ground. They need to learn listening to their customers instead of the pirates.

  • Great review!

  • Brilliant video! You are very entertaining to listen to, keep it up. Always fun to see these older games from before I started using PC:s (X-mas 91).

  • Wow, a manual! You just don't see those anymore.

  • Keep up the great work on the reviews. They're always both entertaining and informative with solid production values. I'm curious, though: do you write a script for each episode?

  • @mstrsmth Thanks! I usually do have some kind of script, like in this review, though I never follow it 100%. I hate scripts, really, but I write them and use them as sort of a detailed outline.

  • @phreakindee

That's good. I think it's what sets your reviews apart. You're always able to give solid background information, especially if you've done research. I've watched far too many reviews where the person rambles aimlessly and I'm not even sure if they liked the game or not lol.

  • Wow when video games came packaged with information that didn't direct you to a website

  • OoooOoh... that framerate.. that'd give me such a horrible headache.

  • @KaySaschnitt Yes, the low frame rate is a bummer. And yes this was shown running at its normal speed. You can get a higher frame rate with a faster 486 CPU for instance, but the gameplay suffers since it speeds the whole game and everything up along with it.

  • woo hoo nother vid from the phreakindee

  • Wow, very nice graphics for the time, and free-roaming too! It's the GTA of its time.

  • very impressive for a 1989 game !

  • Haha. I was just gonna say 'Turbo Esprit' ( I loved that on the Amstrad CPC 464).

  • that looks pretty cool. reminded me of terminator for the old dos computers as well as they look a lot a like. terminator also had lots of free roam

  • Looks like a fun game but I've forgotten just how slow the frame rate was on old 3d games.

  • I think I played this one way back when. Either that or something very similar.

  • Damn! That's pretty futuristic for 1989! Also, great review! No dislikes yet! :D

  • Another old game review, another awesome manual.

    *sigh*

  • Man the choppiness of the game really screwed my eyes up :S

  • wow.. this is indeed innovative

  • Woah, GTA '89. That is so rad that I can hardly contain myself.

  • Man, what a horrible framerate. I wouldn't be able to stand it. But as I understood, it's meant to be that way, right?

  • Your videos are so entertaining and soothing to watch. You`re like the AVGN, except you`re not angry. Keep up the awesome work!

  • wow an open world dos racing game? awesome

  • @sebamkfan Carmageddon was another one..

  • @kazimann this game was way before carmageddon, besides, carmageddon was like in the last days of DOS

  • i think i had this game, or something similar.

  • Wow, really interesting game! Enjoyed flattening the flat pedestrians. Too bad about the sound, but I'm always a sucker for plain ol' polygons. I really like how the other cars look with the thick black lines around the edges, it's like a combo of cel-shaded and flat polygons...awesome. Glad they included the famous gas station, too. :)

  • Phreakindee, please review CoCo or Dragon!

  • WOW!!!! One of my firsts driving games!!

  • @LazyBastard69 I'm not really sure what you mean. I was saying that, in general, games no longer come with lots of useful and informative extras in non-special editions. You're lucky to get a manual with anything useful at all. I wasn't saying it was a steadfast fact, just that games used to come with more stuff more often and Vette is a great example. GTA4 is one of those few exceptions, it has a decent map, manual and poster.

  • @phreakindee I still have some of my old Atari 8-bit games like Ultima IV and Deadline, and when I think of everything that was included back then as just the norm, it's amazing. That stuff (books, maps...Autoduel even came with a little toolset) would only be included now in the "special edition." And then you could spend $150 on the Monstrosity Edition that has the game delivered by parachuting robots and includes a working jetpack and a code for unlocking that jetpack in game.

  • @phreakindee do more minecraft :)

  • @phreakindee All the interesting stuff seems shoe-horned into the "Collectors Edition" of the game ( if there is one at all! ). I remember games coming with truly awesome stuff in the box ( and full size boxes rather than a dvd case with the eula and default controls ). Neverwinter Nights, Mechwarrior 2 Trilogy, Redneck Rampage, and from what I hear various war simulators also come with gigantic manuals. I guess I'm just a fan of D&D-esque source books, lore, and a strong believer in RTFM.

  • you don't see that in games anymore? you live behind a rock don't you? gta4??? :D

  • @LazyBastard69 GTA4 had only thin manual.

  • @30LayersOfKevlar If you bought an original copy, it should also have come with a very large map and poster.

  • Long time no see. Very interesting review. I didn't know EGA games could look that good, that's just that set 16 colours right?

  • Long time no see. Very interesting review. I didn't know EGA games could look that good.

  • Open World Driving Games ... hum, what about "King of the Road" for the PC?

    I love that game. ^^

And what is with Crosscountry USA and Crosscountry Canada? (If those count :P)

But I have to giggle about the name "Vette"...if you pronounce it in a German way, it sounds like "Fette", which means either the plural of fat (like frying fat, whale fat or ... what the fats in your body) or a fat female person.

And if you pronounce it in the English way, it sounds like "wet".

    XD

  • Rad review!

  • Great review!

So that's what San Francisco looked like before Midtown Madness.

  • Brilliant video!

The game looks amusing and your commentary is both informative and hilarious :D

  • Why don't you have more subs? Your vids are awesome ^_^

  • Lulz @ Toyota excuse

  • Man I've seen ads for this game back in the day, but never actually seen the product in computer shop shelves.
