Damn, I just had to miss this game by a decade. I came across this while looking up games set in SF and well, I end up reading about Vette's then-"unheard of" features and I just had to see it for myself. It looks really good for an 89' computer game and it kinda makes me feel that we take those gameplay elements for granted nowadays. Great job on this video man.
You are a great ... i was 14th in 1989 and i plaied a lot of our to this game ... The first one that permit you to kill pedestrians ... it's' the father of Carmageddon
not mentioned: 2-player mode has a Tag game, in which you have to track down and crash into your opponent. And there were some Easter eggs, such as driving into Alameda (across the bay bridge) to see the Spectrum Holobyte offices... it was a great place to hide when playing tag.
Your reviews are consistently classic. Found you via 'Blood' and 'Shadow Warrior' then 'Stunts' and now this. Great sardonic trips down memory lane (FYI loved the tow truck inserts). Can't wait to see the rest of your reviews.
Wow, I was clearing out some old magazines today and looked through a few and saw a review of this game and was shocked to see polygonal graphics in 1989, in addition to all the features and controls. Looked it up on youtube and found this excellent review.
Very impressive stuff for a 386 game, but maybe even more impressive was that in a few years Papyrus released Nascar for 486 pcs, which was my first pc racing game and pretty damn good.
what an ambitious game for its time. Too bad about the sound, may be an amiga version would have fixed that. Not sure it had the processor capacity to handle this game though.
Your reviews are top notch, informative, funny, I love them.
I used to have the MAC version f this game for my LC. The graphics and Sound were INCREDIBLE. Real engine sound, and the intro had some great music. If you can find it, I would highly recommend it on the Mac.
As far as early driving games is concerned, I always preferred those with 2D images like Test Drive and Test Drive II over those with 3D graphics like Test Drive III, and yes, Vette. The problem is that they had to go through a lot of trouble to make the all the 3D info fit into so little space that they had to slim it down as much as possible. At the end I would really dislike the graphics so I wouldn't see much of a point unless technology to support it could improve.
I remember the first Test Drive on the old Commodore Amiga. That was my first racing game...well either that or Rad Racer on the NES, can't remember which one I got first.
Great review! Glad to see it wasn't a, "Omg Grand theft auto has 432489038901238 times better graphics!" I love the early anti-piracy, gotta feel bad for the dude who loses his owner's manual among their other 500 books for DOS, Windows, Other games, and possibly some older BASIC computers like most people had.
Looks like a cool enough game, and strangely one I was completely oblivious to. I thought I knew about all the old racing games. Support for multiplayer is a great feature for such an old game, but no support for sound other than PC speaker is really bad. For the old time classic racing game I still prefer Street Rod or stunts, but I will definitely give this one a spin. Right after I'm done playing Gran Turismo 5 :)
You continue to impress me -- you're the only person who gives these games the treatment they deserve (other than me, but you're doing a better job that I have in recent years). Massive kudos for recognizing Vette! as the innovator it was. I have started to actively look forward to your reviews now. Keep up the great work!
Mostly right about the extras, today most of the nice stuff is exclusive to super-expensive "Collector's Editions" while the PDF-manual-only-approach seems to be the new norm. So the game I pay for is of lesser quality than the illegal copies on P2P (thanks to online-activation and other DRM shit) AND I don't get any extra content for my money either? And those idiots are wondering why PC games are losing ground. They need to learn listening to their customers instead of the pirates.
Keep up the great work on the reviews. They're always both entertaining and informative with solid production values. I'm curious, though: do you write a script for each episode?
@mstrsmth Thanks! I usually do have some kind of script, like in this review, though I never follow it 100%. I hate scripts, really, but I write them and use them as sort of a detailed outline.
That's good. I think it's what sets your reviews apart. You're always able to give solid background information, especially if you've done research. I've watched far too many reviews where the person rambles aimlessly and I'm not even sure if they liked the game or not lol.
@KaySaschnitt Yes, the low frame rate is a bummer. And yes this was shown running at its normal speed. You can get a higher frame rate with a faster 486 CPU for instance, but the gameplay suffers since it speeds the whole game and everything up along with it.
Wow, really interesting game! Enjoyed flattening the flat pedestrians. Too bad about the sound, but I'm always a sucker for plain ol' polygons. I really like how the other cars look with the thick black lines around the edges, it's like a combo of cel-shaded and flat polygons...awesome. Glad they included the famous gas station, too. :)
@LazyBastard69 I'm not really sure what you mean. I was saying that, in general, games no longer come with lots of useful and informative extras in non-special editions. You're lucky to get a manual with anything useful at all. I wasn't saying it was a steadfast fact, just that games used to come with more stuff more often and Vette is a great example. GTA4 is one of those few exceptions, it has a decent map, manual and poster.
@phreakindee I still have some of my old Atari 8-bit games like Ultima IV and Deadline, and when I think of everything that was included back then as just the norm, it's amazing. That stuff (books, maps...Autoduel even came with a little toolset) would only be included now in the "special edition." And then you could spend $150 on the Monstrosity Edition that has the game delivered by parachuting robots and includes a working jetpack and a code for unlocking that jetpack in game.
@phreakindee All the interesting stuff seems shoe-horned into the "Collectors Edition" of the game ( if there is one at all! ). Open World Driving Games ... hum, what about "King of the Road" for the PC?
I love that game. ^^
And what is with Crosscountry USA and Crosscountry Canada? (If those count :P)
But I have to giggle about the name "Vette"...if you pronounce it in a German way, it sounds like "Fette", which means either the plural of fat (like frying fat, whale fat or ... what the fats in your body) or a fat female person.
And if you pronounce it in the English way, it sounds like "wet".
I'd love to see a remake and or re-release of this game for modern PC's. IF they could get details back then, I'm sure it can be done now!
