If you have ever read the “Divine Comedy,” (specifically the first part/arc of the story), the main character, Dante is guided through the 9 circles of Hell, followed by Lucifer contained at the bottom, by the Roman poet Virgil. Virgil explains that each sin's corresponding punishment is a “contrapasso,” a symbolic instance of poetic justice.
