  • dont touch my pipes.

  • 1:30 "7% sex rate" lol

  • Let me guess... Do they grow tobacco in Indiana?

    Cigars & pipes?

This man is a dingbat. And the lady who yielded him one of her minutes is a super dingbat.

  • LIES LIES LIES

Reading between his lies: "Why help people QUIT smoking, when we can help the tobacco industry SELL them NEW nicotine products?"

Rep Steve Buyer... BOUGHT by the tobacco industry.

  • 7% success is a lie. It is not that high. Giving smokers nicotine so they can quit their addiction to nicotine is typical government bullshit. Smokers help the economy (its a fallacy that they get sick more often...more gov. bs so they can tax the hell out of them), and they die early and quickly, saving the gov. more money in pension savings. But 75% of the people are non-smokers so we go along with it.

  • As a guy from Indiana I can honestly say that most Indiana political hacks seem to be morons.

  • Why is he a moron? It seemed that he had his facts straight and provided good points.

  • He did have some facts but hes just another corperate puppet. Instead of restricting the tobaco market from expanding, which is what Kennedy wants to do, he wants to allow the big tobacco companies, the ones that have been killing people for years, to grow so that in the near future they can maybe, posibly, create a slightly less harmful cancer stick.

  • Why are republicans always do or die?

  • He was actually talking about the democratic senator Kennedy introducing a bill that was/is 'do or die'. The bill would narrow what nicotine products could be put on store shelves. The republican in this video was wanting to broaden the field of products; in other words, he didn't want it to be 'do or die' as Kennedy wants

  • I'm not accusing but it seems that Kennedy is purposefully narrowing the market with the intent to monopolize. Of course the only reason this would be profitable for Kennedy is him receiving kickbacks (or other benefits esp during elections) and we all know that NEVER happens. The reason I say this is that there is no reason to narrow the market. Narrowing the market in the way intended by Kennedy is to go against fair market practices by eliminating competition with government legislation.

  • i quit smoking and it was outside of "the market". i quit without buying anyone's stupid stop smoking junk. the year after i quit fast food. i must me a neo-cons worst nightmare because solid solutions exist outside "the market". this guy talks lots of talk -- with no substance.

  • 1:29

    7 percent sex rate!

  • LOLZ!

    Sure I'll yield...

To help you with the math!

Oh, and sorry, but these ARE figures from the Congressional Budget Office

  • Why does the Republican Delegation from Indiana consistently show their asses?

  • Did you know that smoking hamburgers is even LESS healthy than smoking tobacco/lettuce? In fact I think we should PROMOTE smoking tobacco as a healthier alternative to smoking hamburgers! Also it might be prudent to give McDonalds a tax cut so that the invisible hand of Ronald McDonald can find an innovative way to get people to decrease their unhealthy hamburger consuming habits, since obviously that's what McD would do since they hate money/revenue as much as tobacco companies!

  • this guys argument is the same as the carbon reduction critcs.

Claiming that because the expected reductions are small, they are just not good enough whilst offering no realistic alternatives.

Status quo is what he's trying to achieve and these guys are only after the staus quo because of the financial benefits of doing so....for him and his owners. Fuck you Buyers!...double entendra. (spell check)

  • Tobacco should remain legal and the government should not restrict it's use by adults at all.

There are plenty of things in this world more deadly to you than cigarettes. In a free society, we should be allowed to smoke even if it is bad for us.

What's next? Banning high fat foods because obesity and a high fat diet is a leading factor in cardiovascular disease - the number one cause of death in the country?

  • Your dirty cigs have negative external effects dude! Not only in that it smells and potentially harm people around you, but also that it leads to an unhealthier population, higher medical cost and an overall unhealthier economy. Just saying not arguing for this particular bill but the idea that the effects stay contained to individuals is a fantasy.

  • Eating fatty foods and becoming a slobbering fatass will have a much greater cost to society via medical bills, unhealthy population, and higher medical costs than cigarettes ever will. The number one killer in America is not lung cancer, dude!

So ya gunna start banning hamburgers and frenchfries?

We don't need to ban everything that may be bad for us.

  • @Ultra

Yeah I know, I was just pointing out this issue has some grey areas.

  • There's no such thing as reduced harm cigarettes. There's no such thing as a "diet carcinogen".

I wonder how much money RJ Reynolds and Lorillard are giving Rep. Buyer?

  • $99,016: tabacco for his career RJ Reynolds Tobacco $40,500

  • Pharma/Health Products$120,850, Health Professionals$102,480, Oil & Gas$30,900

    Electric Utilities$26,000, TV/Movies/Music$22,800, Telephone Utilities$22,000, Law Firms$19,950, Health Services/HMOs$19,000, Telecom service & Equipment$17,000, Insurance$15,250, Air Transport$14,999

    Hospitals$14,900, Tobacco$14,500

    Automotive$14,300, Lobbyists$12,795, Retired$12,665, Beer, Wine & Liquor$12,500

    Securities & Investment$12,200, Misc Business$11,550, Business Services$10,270

  • The FDA wants to ban electronic cigarettes, which are much less dangerous than regular cigarettes.

Yet they won't ban regular cigarettes, which they can tax.

  • They could tax electronic cigs as well, but you're right that is rather shortsighted (as pathetic as e-cigs are, just patch up!).

  • 1) Further tax the cigarettes,

    2) Add a "bad taste" chemical so that they taste way way worse than they do already

    3) Make it easier for new products like these harm reduction ones to get approval and don't tax them.

This guy is a clown but he makes some good points i'll give him that.

  • Problrm with 1 & 2 is that implies that you want to stop all smokers. Remember some of us smokers choose to smoke and dont want to give up. Should they be forced to pay more for ciggarettes and have to suffer unenjoyable brands?

    point 3 I agree with 100% though!

  • this sounds like crack

you can get your shit anyway you want it.

  • Just tax tobacco to death that would make them quit.

  • If the objective was to stop smoking it would be made illegal.

That is not the objective! The problem is how to stop children from smoking and how to help those who do wish to quit to stop: its like taxing choclate to stop fat people eating too much - ultimately you hurt everyone who likes chocolate not just the fat people.

  • Why on earth would the marketplace have an incentive to slowly reduce revenue? This guy makes no sense at all! If you want innovation to combat smoking it's outside of the tobacco industry and thus outside of the scope of this bill (right?).

  • take the smokers to ER rooms and let em meet ppl with COPD.

    they'll quit

  • I'm a smoker. And what this guy is saying is a migration of the habit that would lead you to quiting. If i move from smoking to something that limits the actual smoke i intake and also brakes the habit of constant lighting up then moves progressively to more safer alternatives while reducing the addiction to that substance then i'm all for it. It actually makes sense. I also believe though harmful chemical reductions in cigarettes would help over all. If it taste like crap when i light up i quit

  • Last time i remember in the 1950's the dentist's were promoting tobacco ...google it tons of ad's they even used images of baby's.

It was not alway known it was harmful ...most people don't know about the floride that is being promoted not by dentist's ...look it up and wake up.

this dude sounds like he is tripping over his own words/crap.

  • I can assure you this bill will do absolutely nothing to help many people and will just be another silly burden on the backs of Americans. I mean, people KNOW what they're getting into when they smoke! And where are the parents of these underage kids who smoke? Don't scapegoat the tobacco co's and make silly claims about how they "target kids." Tell the parents to discipline their fucking kids!

  • Is this guy a goverment mouthpiece for big tobbacco? On this same speach he said smoking lettus is equilivent as smoking tobbacco and nictione is harmless and it's the smoke that causes problems. What an ass, and he (is/was?) a full bird Col in the Army Reserve. What a joke.

  • nicotine in mild doses (enough to curve a smokers craving) is less harmfull than you think.

It has almost no long term negative effects other than in very large doses. In extreme does nicotine is a poison, but you would have to eat thousands of cigarettes in one go for nicotine to do you any harm.

its IS the smoke thats the real problem and why smoking a lettuce leaf would be bad for you too.

  • Yeah but what's the reason people don't smoke lettuce leafs genius?

  • 7% of 20 million is 1,400,000 people, how is that a bad thing?

  • In how many years (n) will the interest paid to the foreign holders of the U.S. debt exactly equal annual U.S. GDP growth?

  • I went to a hypnotist and a single session worked for me. I wanted to quit so badly, and somehow that was what put me over the top.

And since I quit I can run agin, I'm in better shape, my face looks younger, and I am so glad I'm not supporting the evil poison-sellers who this douchebag congressman works for.

  • 7% sex rate!

  • Out of all the things that need attention in the United States........finally, finally, this Republican is dealing with the most important pressing matter. Let's spend all of our time, effort, and technology to solve how nicotine fiends get access to their poison! Forget Iraq, the economy, universal health care, domestic terrorism, let's solve this issue NOW.

    I have a chart.......I'm smart

    I spew numbers.........I'm smart

    I speak loudly...........I'm smart

    I

  • one day people lik these will realise that the markets have failed us.

  • This FDA bill is stupid, stupid, stupid. You guys should read it.

  • Thank God he had those props!! I wouldn't understand 2/10 x1%. Idiot!

  • It busts my chops to come even this near agreement with anyone who calls themselves a Republican, I gotta point out... this guy makes some sense.

What's being done to demonize, tax, & litigate the tobacco industry out of business? Quite a bit... and, at great expense.

What's being done to help the tobacco industry produce successively less harmful generations of products people will buy? Nothing.

Who knows... some genetic derivative of tobacco might/maybe be used to produce biofuels.

  • Wanna know how I quit smoking after four years..?

It tastes like Gym socks.. it makes you look old.. it gives you cancer.. it speeds up balding in men.. and it makes your teeth yellow..

Not only that but I hate things controlling me.. I'm a natural anarchist so if someone says I am addicted to something I quit it.. if my mother says I have to marry a certain type I marry the opposite. Quitting isn't that hard all you have to do is stop.. its not addictive.

  • You may have been one of the lucky ones, but let me tell ya, smoking is very addictive. I quit 20 years ago, cold turkey, but it was a bitch!

  • ... got a cig on you.. I quit buying them. No, just kidding.

  • You're addicted to personal liberty. ;)

  • .. I cant be addicted to personal liberty.. because I have no idea what that is.. if you mean I'm addicted to nonconformity. thats impossible because I am part of a forum.. if you say I'm addicted to conformity that's impossible because I'm a troll.

So its a case of the snake eating the tail. There is no true answer to any that question because I'm both a conformist and a nonconformist.

  • that sign was retarded. i lost all respect for him when he started stumbling over it.

  • Can anyone explain to me the point of giving the FDA the authority to regulate the ingredients in cigarettes but not the authority to ban them if they are deemed unsafe for consumption? I am a smoker and I WANT them to ban the damn things. It's probably the only way I will be able to quit.

  • How about 0.2%??? WTF?

  • I don't believe it is as high as 7%. Anytime you give someone nicotine so they can stop their addiction to nicotine, they will fail. All non-smokers and most smokers believe smokers smoke for a variety of reasons, one being pleasure. But smokers smoke for one reason only: They are addicted to nicotine. Most smokers die from it without realizing they went through their whole life in a state of nicotine withdrawal every waking moment.

  • This guy is good...we need more people like this

  • "The proposed strategy has been proven not to work. We can do better. There are better ways!"

"But...that's FOR'NERS. That's not MERIKA! We think it'll work here!"

    *sigh*

  • What a joke.

GOP have no problems going after abstinence for sex education.

But they are against abstinence of smoking.

  • Comment removed

  • Why did he write 2/10 of 1% when he could have just written 0.2%

  • Wait why is a congressman arguing for tobaco?

WTF is wrong with these people WHO DO YOU WORK FOR the people or Corporations?

  • 7% ? Looks like the replacement is not even working
