I LIKE THIS POEM! I ENJOY LISTENING TO IT. ITS DEEP, INSIGHTFUL AND THOUGHT PROVOKING; HOWEVER, I DONT SEE THE POINT OF CURSING/ SWEARING. IT ACTUALLY PUT ME OFF TRACK A BIT WHEN SHE SAID "IM NOT A FUCKING COOKIE!". IDK ...I FOUND IT UNNECESSARY. I ALSO WISH SHE DIDNT STOP AS MUCH WHEN THE CROWD WOULD CHEER; AND THEN SHE WOULD CONTINUE... I THINK I UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DID IT THOUGH. I WOULD APPRECIATE ALSO IF THE POET'S NAME WAS ATTACHED TO THE PIECE! ALL IN ALL, IM GLAD I CAME ACROSS THIS POEM
THATS WHAT THE FUCK IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! TELL EM!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST POEMS I HAVE HEARD ON YOUTUBE YET!!!! DOES ANYBODY KNOW HER PERSONALLY IF SO TELL HER TO ADD ME ON FACEBOOK (rocafellad88@yahoo.com)
I never paid attention to race till i got to middle school, because told me that i was mixed because real black ppl dont have long hair. They would ask me what my race was and i would explain myself. Looking back on it, I wish I wouldve said does it matter? I am American.
this was EPIC! she literally broke it down, exposed her strong psyche, and spoon-fed it for all of YOU who are afraid to see the truth. lalalalove this!
thank yhu someone had stood up for the mixxed ones i get tired of hearing little comments about being mixxed sin im black samoan chinese cuban and belizean
not many people understand bieng bi-racial, im multi-racial (black, white, indian, and mexican) and for the longest tim i wasnt fully excepted by any one. i wasnt "black enough" for black people, i wasnt "white enough" for white people, and i wasnt "mexican enough" for mexicin people...being more than one race is hard. especially whe you tell someone ur part black and they replay with "You Aint black!". ..how would you know what race i am?
@TheSamechan i agree . my mom is half black and half chinese, while my dad is half black and half white . i'm 1/2 black, 1/4 chinese, and 1/4 white, but that's not enough for a lot of people . i'm tired of that, but at the end of the day, i love my race :)
@TheSamechan I totally agree with you. I am multi racial as well, and people question my race all the time. And I try to answer truthfully, because I am different races and I don't want to feel like I'm.....giving more honor to one than the another. Because I am proud of the blood that runs through my veins and where it comes from. And people just don't understand that, they feel that you must be in a box and you must be labeled at all times.
@TheSamechan Mexican isnt a race, there are white mexicans ya know, Alot of Europeans blood :) plus...there are only 3 races. Not everyone has the same racial classifications
We shouldn't have to choose one race to identify by, that would be throwing away half of your parents! Hell, the first time I heard of an Oreo was when I was called one. Im also adopted, so that sometimes garners odd looks at us. I live in Ireland.
@cpmc1 i also get odd looks, i live in england, and its not weird to see lots of mixed raced people, but i guess people are still confused when they see a BLACK mother with a mixed child lol, i think people only see mixed relationships as black father white mother, and never the other way around, which irks me.
Lived it and still liven it. Being bi-racial is no easy feet. Hated by those you think who will most accept you because they are are really jealous and don't even know you. yes! This is my story too!
WWHHHHHAAATTT???!!! Zora did that!! lol... "IM NOT A FUCKIN COOKIE!!" HAHA "Until you get to the back and encounter the jungle in which you can find both TARZAN AND JANE!!" hahahahahaha DAMNNNNN1
I was never brought up to treat someone different just because they are darker than mor or lighter, I just accept them for who they are and not what they are. Too bad their aren't a lot of people like me lol, but her poem is very powerful.
This made me cry. I feel her pain. As a bi-racial girl myself i know what she means. I aint no damn cookie or berry. I understand the whole hair situation. I can run my fingers though it in the front but not in the back.
No offense but I don't find many bi-racial people to actually look different than others....in my opinion most look like one or both races enough to fall in well with one or both groups...Zora is clearly a talented poet I just have a problem with bi-racial people exaggerating the concept that their physical appearance somehow makes them explicitly bi-racial to the rest of the world, there really isn't such a thing as "looking" bi-racial so I don't see how it's a hardship
@BriBreezyBri I didn't get that out of the poem (and by the way, there are some people who do "look" bi-racial.) it's about her knowing her history and basically hating that people who do know that she's bi-racial, either discriminate, mock, or even sympathize for her. basically, she's saying that having "mixed" blood isn't something to be ashamed of. at least that's what I got out of it. and it can be a hardship if you let people know about it, because unfortunately racism still exists.
yea...i was kinda thinkin she was sayin the same thang...but ima give her the benefit of the doubt and think that she was using naps to really connect to her roots because people discredit her blackness...i just dont understand y people would discredit her for her roots?...she clearly black...maybe she looked less black when she was younger...
@DatBlackAmerican In my opinion I think she was just speaking from the point of her being light skinned with alot of hair. Alot of black people give lightskinned girls a hard time because they tend to have better hair and be biracial. Shes pointing out that even though she has long hair its still like a full blood african american hair. Also, about her being biracial because africanamericans tend to treat light skinned people different because they feel like they are only half black not majority
better hair? what is that? that's why she wrote the poem cause their is no such thing! there is a healthy and damaged hair. and what is a full blood african am? Most of us have other whites in our blood or native americans!!!
@DatBlackAmerican even when you clearly look black some people will push you aside, make you feel alone or like you don't belong. when i was younger i was made fun of for having lighter skin and diffrent hair. even as a teenager people would tell me i looked like a mexican, because they aimply didn't want to give me that 'black' credit.
That was good... although i didn't agree with everything the poem was saying... Maybe because my mom is Hispanic and Caucasian and I grew up with her. That is so funny that she mention being tender-headed and nappy in the back because that is how it was like for me exactly!
Well, you probably didn't agree with most of it because she's talking about herself being mixed with black and white so the things she wrote only apply to her.
@brobro565656 -----> it not easy being biracial we didnt ask for this we accept it. she has a good head on her shoulders... she's clearly expressing herself & the way that she feels... some people only see color she wants you to get past the skin.... i think she was wonderful. being a Bi-racial Woman i understand 100% how she feels.
I see you didn't listen to the entire poem. She said biracial as in "raped 6 times by the master, birthed 6 babies and later hung blood." You mentioned "nuttin" inside of white women" she mentioned "the blood that dripped from emmit till's lips for breaking down color lines." You obviously don't know this young woman's pain or the pain of any mixed person who has never been accepted by blacks or whites. "one drop" makes you whole on paper, it's a different story when you're spat on by your own.
i sent this to a friend of mind, she has a biracial sister(i am biracial aswell) and she called her a whitey for being light skin. i tolled her it was wrong and sent her this video because it was offencive to me. i grew up in new york with an all black family but i was light skinned.. people asked me if i was adopted i was called an oreo and a mudblood. i know how it feels and i showed her this video.. i just hope she can understand one day that we as a mixed comunity go threw alot..
