We all know that throughout history numerous cases of executed convicts were later found proven to be innocents and given the 'Too late pardons'. The law does have flaws. The law sometimes kill innocents unknowingly. There can be false-evidence planters. There can be lying witnesses also that dupes the law into believing them. There can be some biased or corrupted Police, Prosecutors, Judges or strong influence of a Jury member. The question of the death sentence is hard to believe in anymore.
Society is judged on how it treats it's prisoners. Look at all the countries that still use torture and death penalties, many of which are 3rd world poor countires, however few arn't.

I'm on the fence with the death penalty. The way our judicial system is I wouldn't trust it right now. I can see the reasoning for it, but I can also see innocent people being put to death because of sheer incompetence.

Here in The US, there's been 1,233 executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, with the lions share of those coming from Texas(Nobody likes Texas, they're the asshole of the family). Every one of those were capitol offenses meaning that the person either killed an on-duty pig, multiple premeditated murders, murder using a gun from a car, etc. It's simple, we have more murders because we have more guns, but we feel safer because we can carry 24/7, and those that do feel safer.

Problem with death penalty is.. the justice system is not perfect. Sometimes the wrong bastard gets convicted and real criminal gets away with it. You don't need to be religious to not be a fan of the death penalty. I'm a staunch Atheist/Agnostic yet don't think DP has any place in this society. For one, it takes 10 to 20 years of costly taxpayer legal proceedings, appeals - etc - before it actually can legally take place, and the legal system is no surefire way of determining guilt. It is better for 100 guilty men to go free rather than one innocent man be killed. I used to be a supporter until I actually saw execution videos online.

I believe that if someone has intentionally harmed or killed someone they deserve to die. If they can prove that it was accidental e.g car crash or something like that I don't believe that they should be put to death over it. They should however still be sent to prison. The thing is is that its hard to find out whether someone had committed a crime intentionally or not and that could mean people could be put to death unfairly. which isn't right. But I believe the death penalty is a good thing.

You said in the vid that religious people would be less likely to have a death penalty. That does not seem to be the case, at least in America, the more the populations of a state are religious, the more likely they will have a death penalty for that state.

My church teaches that there are 2 sins that can`t be forgiven in this life, in other words you can`t beforgiven until you`re face to face with God. One of them is murder.
So I guess that I don't support the death penalty because of the possibility of mistakes in the verdict or the possibility of later evidence that would have provided an acquittal. However, the prison sentences need to be appropriate. Life should mean the prisoner dies in prison. Molesting children should be years in prison not months. There should be truth in sentencing not good behaviour being rewarded in a cut to the sentence but poor or even less than good behaviour adds to the sentence.

I personally know of a family where their child was sexually abused and murdered by a couple of men. The culprits had such low IQ that they were assessed as not responsible for their actions in a similar way that children are not considered responsible for their actions. The problem with the death penalty is that if a mistake is eventually found in the verdict, there is no way to reverse or compensate for the wrongful conviction. In USA there have recently been a a few case where DNA evidence has proven that the convicted murderers likely were not involved at all.

I've heard don't quote me on it but places where they do have it i.e USA its not as simple as just killing someone and actually cost more when they are on death row, with all the retrials and that trying to got off death row the court cost are sky high more waste of tax payers money the scumbags get! Personally im one who believes that the death penalty is too easy.but then they dont deserve the luxury that they get in prison, put them into a cell, they get a bucket to shit in and another bucket to eat out of,have those conditions for 30 years would be much cheaper for us to pay for, much harder for the mongrels. the death penalty does nothing to deter crime and can be very expensive itself. however, even more than those two reasons, my biggest objection is that it makes our justice system no better than the criminal. state sanctioned murder is still murder. is the answer to a barbaric act more barbarism? no i don't believe so...all that said i can understand wanting revenge and i used to support the death penalty.

Here in The US, there's been 1,233 executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, with the lions share of those coming from Texas(Nobody likes Texas, they're the asshole of the family). Every one of those were capitol offenses meaning that the person either killed an on-duty pig, multiple premeditated murders, murder using a gun from a car, etc. It's simple, we have more murders because we have more guns, but we feel safer because we can carry 24/7, and those that do feel safer.

Problem with death penalty is.. the justice system is not perfect. Sometimes the wrong bastard gets convicted and real criminal gets away with it. If the innocent gets shot in the head prematurely, there is no way back, even when you find proofs later on to prove his/her innocence. It'd be pointless. I personally don't feel like getting hung for a crime I've never done.

You don't need to be religious to not be a fan of the death penalty. I'm a staunch Atheist/Agnostic yet don't think DP has any place in this society. For one, it takes 10 to 20 years of costly taxpayer legal proceedings, appeals - etc - before it actually can legally take place, and the legal system is no surefire way of determining guilt. It is better for 100 guilty men to go free rather than one innocent man be killed. I used to be a supporter until I actually saw execution videos online.

I have to live with memories of these thing my whole life and yes it affects me still. I believe that if someone has intentionally harmed or killed someone they deserve to die. If they can prove that it was accidental e.g car crash or something like that I don't believe that they should be put to death over it. They should however still be sent to prison. The thing is is that its hard to find out whether someone had committed a crime intentionally or not and that could mean people could be put to death unfairly. which isn't right. But I believe the death penalty is a good thing.

Im certainly pro death penalty, the thing is you really gotta know without a shadow of a doubt that the person deserves it.
In a perfect justice system we would see offenders suffer as horribly as their victims (and that includes families, friends, associates etc) and then be put down without the dignity and respect a normal person deserves.
Its a pretty complex issue. But one things for sure, the law is way too fuckin soft on actual bad people (especially in NZ) and too harsh on everyone else

You said in the vid that religious people would be less likely to have a death penalty. That does not seem to be the case, at least in America, the more the populations of a state are religious, the more likely they will have a death penalty for that state.
As for the DP? Yes, *but* there has to be virtually no doubt, many witnesses and/or video footage sure, as the DP is un-revocable, and I would be reluctant to advocate a DP on flimsy evidence. Repeat violent offenders though, yes.

When comes to the death penalty, and eye for an eye and all that, I just go by one of my morals which basicly goes off a 'dont drop down to their level' kind of thing. What should seperate us, the good people from the scum of the earth like them is that we dont murder, harm them etc. So for me death penelty is a no. Especially as on average in the UK, there are over 1000 cases of mis-justice in the courts. But I dont think they should be just imprisoned, they should be put to work or something.

In fact I don't agree with the death penalty but I do understand the outrage of families of the victims but in all honest if you are going to use it it should only be if the victim(s) were killed deliberately, though would such punishment be in the deceased victims best wishes as well? i belive that if u commit a serious crime like the ones u stated,murder rap & harmin kids then yes the punishment sholuld be death as these criminals have now respect for life so why should they have one themselfs,this world is wicked and to much bad is allowed to be pushed under the table AN EYE FOR AN EYE

Pete, do you know who Prince Vlad Tepes is? If not, look him up. He was a bit of a loon but he ruled an area in Transylvania called Wallachia. He carried out capitol punishment like no one else. I think if we carried out his execution and torture methods on criminals, it would send such a shock through out the country that rape, murder and all other heinous crimes would drastically drop if not end all together. His rule was cut short but if he had a few more years, there'd have been total peace

The Death Penalty is murder. It's a barbaric punishment. Used by third world backward countries. We don't have it here, and we would never extradite anyone wo was wanted in another country, who would face the death penalty, we certainly would not even hand over osama bin laden to America, if we catch him, because they would murder him, As for nonces, let them suffer in prison, constantly looking over there shoulder, getting daily beatings off imates and screws, death is the easy way out for scum

I don't ask about your girls lol. I believe in God and believe in the death penalty. So there you go. They actually say though in the US it costs the tax payers more to do the death penalty. Because they let them appeal yada yada. So putting them in for life for the tax payers they say is cheaper go figure.

fab then you have the problem of was the murder or what ever justified... or in self defense, and whos to say whats ok and what isnt when it comes to protecting yourself and such? I dont like the idea of a government being able to take someones life no matter how shitty they are... heck, why not make them work and pay to live??? There is shit they can do in jail, make them pay to support themselves.

Certainty is the problem, easy to be reactionary and say "kill em all" but I have seen far to many miscarriages of justice in high profile cases,guilford 4, etc.I am sure that you (Pete) understand that you were 1 step away from being a murderer if you put people in hospital SO I would like to know if you would apply your own logic to your actions if you had been unlucky and killed someone - beating someone up is attempted murder as it only takes one blow to kill a human being

Certainty cannot be achieved because men are imperfect...and since death is totally FINAL its a matter of simple game theory.....There is a chance of a TYPE 1 error that has an infinite consequence (according to my atheistic world view)...this makes the death penalty totally unacceptable for me, despite the fact that i DO want people who HAVE commited these offenses to die.

I agree with you. I think that for such offenses like murder, rape of any kind, molestation of any kind, especially molestation of a child the perpetrator should be put to death. However I would like to add one offense to the list. People who deal drugs to children.

Well FAB, I may throw a monkey wrench into your image of the world. I`m a devout christian. I beleive in turning the other cheek, I beleive in giving people forgivness and giving them a chance to change their lives....but I`m also a firm believer in the death penalty. Confused yet?
My church teaches that there are 2 sins that can`t be forgiven in this life, in other words you can`t beforgiven until you`re face to face with God. One of them is murder.

So I guess that I don't support the death penalty because of the possibility of mistakes in the verdict or the possibility of later evidence that would have provided an acquittal. However, the prison sentences need to be appropriate. Life should mean the prisoner dies in prison. Molesting children should be years in prison not months. There should be truth in sentencing not good behaviour being rewarded in a cut to the sentence but poor or even less than good behaviour adds to the sentence.

The death penalty is ok but I think it should not be used lightly and always be the VERY LAST resort if there is no hope for the criminal. People talk of it like its just another form of punishment which is totally wrong. You're KILLING someone. If you then find out 5 years later they were innocent you cant just go "WHOOPS LOL"

I personally know of a family where their child was sexually abused and murdered by a couple of men. The culprits had such low IQ that they were assessed as not responsible for their actions in a similar way that children are not considered responsible for their actions. I find that absolute rubbish.
I also know an idiot who was caught about to molest a baby of a friend of mine and also had hundreds of child pornography on his computer.
His sentence was 3 months jail but I did only 1 month.

The problem with the death penalty is that if a mistake is eventually found in the verdict, there is no way to reverse or compensate for the wrongful conviction. In USA there have recently been a a few case where DNA evidence has proven that the convicted murderers likely were not involved at all.

I totally agree with you FAB scum bags who rape, murder (serial killers for example) and those who molest children should be put to death. These people can't be rehabilitated. However those in charge have to do a better job of making sure people arn't brought up to become these sorts of people.

Nearly agree, totally agree IF 100% proof of guilt is availiable. Best way to do it would be Jail them untill a certain date and then have a big telivised fight to the death(as has happened on many tv shows and films), the winner gets sentence reduced to life imprisonment with hard labour.
