I can honestly say, I am ashamed. I think what people need to realize is that the dog you get is not always as healthy as it seems. I'm not sure what will happen with our corgi, as he has the worst digestive system ever, what with food allergies and bacterial infections on the skin to where they cannot be cured.

I don't know what to really say, other than research people. Tons and tons of research on breeders and lineages and everything under the sun.

Some day I would like to have a corgi welcomed into my family but I am scared to buy one that may have hip problems. I do know that responsible and excellent breeders will not have pedigree corgis, and thaty they are willing to take the puppy back no matter what age it may live up to be, and that they will have tested for genetic mistakes, but where can I find a trust worthy breeder?

Pembrokes are a tad prone to problems due to popularity, but most of the time, they're a pretty hardy breed. The best advice I can offer is to look through the bloodlines, see the parents on site, study the location in which the dogs are raised (are they locked up in kennels? Are they safe?) and try to find out all you can on the breed's possible health issues. Just ask tons of questions and the more the breeder can answer these questions appropriately, the better the dogs will be.

Thanks for answering my question. I am well aware of puppy mills and how bad they are for the dogs, their health and their behavior. And I have learned a good breeder will be willing to take the dog back at any given time. I will never lock my dog up in a kennel due to their need to exercise and be mentally stimulated. Responsible owners will report their dog's health to the breeder or directly to the kennel club. I have a labrador bred by Nolene Dodd of Eneleon Labradors Garstang, he has severe elbow dysplacia and must have painkillers every day, I called her when we found out to advise against breeding from the parents again, five minutes later the police were on the phone saying she called them to say she was being 'harrassed' do not buy a dog from her. Also the sire was from Oakhouse Labradors Wales, very high hip and eye scores and she is a crufts judge, these people are only in it for the money!

I'd just like to point out to anyone watching this... one thing they conveniently forget to mention is that syringomyelia is NOT HEREDITARY, therefore two dogs who have been tested clear from it can produce a puppy that is a sufferer. I know one of the breeders on this that spoke to the camera, and what she said was edited and censored, making it biased towards the programme. A lot of the 'facts' this programme puts across are actually untrue, the vast majority of the CKCS are healthy and loved.

The crux of the problem with breeding is that it requires an understanding of biology and genetics if it is to be done responsibly, yet a lot of these people clearly have no idea what they're doing.

People considering buying a dog breed should research it, and make sure the dog is not affected by an inherited disease, and never bred from if it is a carrier.

I completely agree with the description of how stoic these poor animals are. What loyal determination to love a person who produces such a deformed and painful body for such pointless and selfish purposes. You love your dog like you would a child- but you would do all of this to a child?

This is insane. I find the cruelty in all this very depressing. More upsetting still is the flagrant unwillingness to even consider looking at the facts or listening to an opposing view on the part of the breeders and the KC. There's just something about ignorant and irrational people that really makes me angry.

Totally irresponsible breeding, knowing that the dog is passing on its serious genetic defect to future dogs is totally down to one thing..MONEY.. I am glad this has been exposed.. the public have the power to change this and the kennel club the responsibility to enforce it.

I agree. If I´d be breeding a certain breed, and heard there might be an illness among the breed I havent heard of yet and that it can easily go unnoticed if not checked at the vet, I´d get really nervous and would immediately want to find more about it! Because I certainly woulnt want to be responsible of causing the death of other dogs just because I havent checked my dogs health at a vet :(

bizzare. When asked why these 'furnishings' (excessive loose skin) were desirable the judge responded that it's 'the way the breed is'. Typical example of the idiocy demonstrated by so many breeders/ kennel club officials here. Never questioning why such clearly pointless and often dangerous mutations are promoted. The desire to breed an animal for cosmetic characteristics above health and longevity is disgusting.
