What the hell has happened to rap these days? I listen to everything from rap to metal and I wish I could go back to my teen years when music like this was in and rap was actually ABOUT something and had a positive message.
@benravensfan02 For your information, Ozzy was involved. But the instrumental is from Black Sabbath. Get your facts straight before you try correcting someone.
@TheCharisma1972 Um... you may want to get your facts straight as well. Sabbath or Ozzy weren't involved on this AT ALL, except for Mix havin' to pay them money to use the music sample (Which was played on this track by Craig Wells of METAL CHURCH).
@benravensfan02 Metal Church is the band that play the music you hear here. The only part that is from Sabbeth is the one main riff. But Metal Church is playing it.
@antares074 If I'm not mistaken, it's only Craig Wells on guitar. The drums are all synth. Metal Church was the most under-rated band from the 80's & 90's.
I found out about this track/cover from a DVD music trivia game at a party. I was like, what! I gotta check this out. And yeah, if it could be found anywhere, it could be found on Youtube. Damn!
-- yep, it was the BEST time to be alive ... I miss it! All different kinds of music and artists were just going off. The shit today is a plastic imitation of past glory =/
-- Rap like this, Run DMC/Aerosmith's "Walk this Way," and a lot of samples by Public Enemy/others (including the Beastie Boys) predates a lot of the "Rap Rock"/"Rap metal" of the early/late 90's (and beyond). Mix-a-lot cover is an example of how rap artists were pushing the envelope and creating whole new genres which blended very different styles of music. Now, we have autotune and the same old stock "gangsta" rapper storyline. Except for some underground/less popular acts, it's boring now...
@greymobvmp -- lulz... I can't tell if you are disagreeing with me or what, mutha fucka ;D ... Still, I would agree that the number of rappers who were sampling and featuring metal riffs were few and far between, but you can't reduce it down to only Sir Mix-a-lot, Run DMC/Aerosmith, and Ton Loc. I think you still have to include "License to Ill" (1986) by the Beastie Boys and Public Enemies' debut "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" (1987). Remember, Swass came out in 1988...
@cantecleer yarr but in L.A. we didnt hear much public enemies till like 93 or so mabey a lil earlyer, yer right how could i forget the beasties? to bad they turned in to commies huh? still it was a great time to be alive huh?
@cantecleer another one was Anthrax "I'm the Man". it came out in 1987 i believe. lot of people think they were making fun of the beastey boys but i dont think so. they they sample from the beginning of fight for you right. and they use to wear public enemy t-shirts ond ofcourse did bring the noise with them later. so anthrax was a major player in the whole rap/rock thing. they were just ahead of the times. coming from new york they knew the b-boyz and pe.
-- @antares074 Yeah, you're right. I forgot about those (well, I did mention PE, but not "Bring the Noise"). To be fair, though, I was just citing some examples in the previous posts (not trying to list every group that fused rap+metal). Besides, PE's "Bring the Noise" was released in '91 (over 5 years after the examples I gave), and though "Epic" was earlier than that (89), it was still a few years later than the Beastie's "License to Ill" and PE's "Yo! Bum Rush the Show". They all rock, though
@cantecleer yea its all good. i was throwing a couple more out there that was before the era of limp bizkit, linkin park, ect. i was not denying you or trying to show you up. i love this song and the others you mentioned. i really enjoy it people try to break the boundries that others set up. long live those brave enough and bold enough to do so. Elvis, Hendrix, Valens and all the others thank you.
@antares074 -- I didn't think you were trying to show me up or anything like that. And I can't believe I forgot to mention Ice T ... that's a huge one xD
i remember listening to this in my brothers 1980's green pick up. he had an equalizer and 6 house speakers in the bed. 4 of them were full size tower speakers and 2 regulars.
i remember listening to this in my brothers 1980's green pick up. he had an equalizer and 6 house speakers in the bed. 4 of them were full size tower speakers and 2 regulars. JAMMN!!
sir mix alots version is good but NOOOOO it is no where near better than black sabbath's version. you talk about which is better it all started with black sabbath. but with all due respect, sir mix alot did a great job with it in his own style and i believe metal church helped too.
Ahhhhh? but who started rap & roll. As in the 1st national ran, rap&roll song .RunDMC."Walk This Way " ?? NO ! It's a song named RockBox .Hmmm? The new YT should let me post it here .I'm gona try.
@kaadauwgg Its been said that The Clash were the first rock band to fuse rap and rock. There song The Magnificant Seven has Joe Strummer rapping in the style of the early hip hop of the late 70's early 80's and the music was also similiar to a Grandmaster Flash song.
@stonehopper1067 That IS a good song. But The Magnificant Seven has hardly a traditonal "Clash "sound to it .The bassline screams funky. It's a rock band showing they can get their funk on. Don't you think it sounds kinda like Blondies "Rapture"...
yess!!! i found it xD heard this song years ago :D
