  • He's showing how anything can get a virus.I work in electrical retail and you see all types coming back. Some people do not bover with virus checkers because they think they are too clever, some because they will just reload everytime, some because they never had a problem with viruse (even that viruses can work in stealth). Some people are ok, some people do reload and some people are beyond reloading their system.Easy thing to do, just load a viruse checker on your machine from a good company.

  • This is stupid... Who would download something from an unknown source? They'd have to be a moron... The guy is basically saying that in the video. Just look at all of the bad signs on that page!

  • Got eset and not get trojans or viri on the pc either, fanbois need to realise that there are sites out there that are designed to fool them and if they had no AV and went to the site listed, well who knows what they might lose :)

  • Never had a virus on mac !

  • What Apple means is there is no need to have anti-viruses as long as you don't install unknown programs. It's true that MACs cannot get viruses but they can get trojan and trojan isn't quite the same. You have to install trojan manually

  • YAY, MACS ARE JUST AS BAD, I NEED TO CELEBRATE! TURN ESET OFF!!!

  • Nothing like a bit of advertising bullshit :)

  • Half the argument for a Mac just went right out the window.

  • caught on camera hahahahahahah

u make it sound like a celebrity scandal

  • I got a Windows Virus on my Mac from school and I got this Pop Up and got the Virus removed from my System (Even tho It could not harm my Mac)

    Thanks Sophos

  • dude thats an awsome animation on the site doh!

  • WOAHHHHHHHHHH! I AM SO SCARED FOR MY MAC NOW, LIKE OMG.... LOL JK, no, just no. Anyone with just a little bit of brains will be able to tell if something looks a bit dodgy, plus this is one of few viruses on a Mac anyway.

  • Alright, proof for all of you Apple fanboys out there that Macs can get viruses, get Linux, you are far less prone to getting viruses with Linux than Mac, and of course much far less than Windows

  • @1536mbComedy That was a trojan, it requires permission. As has been said already, ANY system (including those using unix based operating systems like OSX and linux) is vulnerable to exploitation if you allow it (trojans/phishing/pharming etc.) Providing one is sensible, one can live without anti-virus on linux and OSX until actual self replicating viruses and worms become commonplace. I find it hillarious that people are making out that linux is safer than OSX!

  • @mingeweb if you think about it, Linux is safer than Mac, it has been proven to have better security, and also there are far fewer threats for Linux then Mac

  • @1536mbComedy Win 7 is safer than Snow Leopard

  • @TheMrDisser eh, not really, Windows has far more viruses than Linux and Mac combined, but what I am trying to say is that Mac fans out there say Macs never crash and never get viruses, both can happen, I have crashed an Apple device many times, lol

  • @1536mbComedy it is its a fact. There might be more viruses out there BUT nearly all of them do not affect win7 since it recognizes and deletes them

  • My school uses sophos :)

  • idiot. there's no such thing like this website.

  • My grannie could write a trojan - by there nature they sneak in and need explicit permission. Anything is vulnerable if you allow it, secificaly allow it. whether that is computers or real life.

Worms or actual viruses are when AV will be needed for macs.

  • Using your Apple product in a coffee shop staring at the Apple Website IS NOT having a social life!

Mac's get viruses as well! - The reason there's more for PC is because Mac's suck and more people have PC's! :)

  • Now Steve comes and say "Mac's can't get viruses!" and then, during the conference, an message "Your Mac got a virus." like in Windows presentation (yea, the BSOD)...

    I would just lmao...

  • I'm using the Comodo for Mac AV Beta

  • Let's be clear: a trojan (as shown in this video) is NOT a virus.

  • @code3paris

    lol, yes it is.

  • It's funny how this guy researched the country code and left his search query on the google search box on the top right. :)

  • So, now why would you use a mac if you can get virus?

    Because you like OSX?

..Fine by me, as long as you don't try to convert me like a christian fucktard.

  • @derallter I agree, plus if I want a Mac like OS I can just use Linux Ubuntu or Linux Mint with a Mac theme ... or one of the other 700 free Linux distributions . Linux as of right now have no known virus in the wild , and will run on most PC's , plus it's free. There is a bit of a learning curve with Linux, but it's fun once you get the hang of it... Plus I have Windows 7 ,and Linux Ubuntu on a dual-boot so I can boot Windows any time I need to.

  • @derallter Mac viruses are rare.

  • @iAppleseedy

    even so, they still exist.

  • This link is unusable. For Sale.

  • Sophos for Mac is free... that's good.

  • well yay hd... WHOA HEY HEY! lol

  • Although this is a viral ad for Sophos; so far using Sophos, Mcafee and Kaspersky on Windows I would put them in this order. 1)Kaspersky 2)Mcafee and 3)Sophos. On my work PC Sophos has provided no protection from a simple virus attack through Java on Firefox and that was it for me. New to Macs, that's how I found this video.

  • "Country code +86? where is that? oh it's China (...)" - Ironically, 80% of software from China is filled with viruses. Not really suprising, as they have too many people, and many are just struggling to make off money from something. No racism intended. Still hackers should make more viruses, to get some sense into people.

  • Mac users don't even know how to plug in their computer. They would be perfect targets for malware.

  • mr sphos u sound so gay

  • @krisz1085 woa! hey! hey! @ 1.26

  • Great video! Yep Windows isn't the only one with probolems...

  • @DOSnUNIX

Nope, it still is. Mac and Linux are pretty damn safe. The fact that this video even exists proves that. Some guy at Sophos was lucky enough to come across a virus that sorta worked (notice he didn't run it), and made a quick vid before it disappeared. Heh.

And yes, trojans exist on mac, but they can exist on any machine that lets you install apps. Trojans require your password, so if a legit app had an evil dev, he could put a trojan in it.

  • Here are two, independent, unbiased news sources explaining why Macs are no more secure than Windows (and often quite less secure.)

Security through obscurity is not a good form of protection.

The only reason you're less likely to get a virus or some malware is because *you represent such an insignificant portion of computer users.*

  • Youtube doesn't allow you to post links any more. Awesome.

google: PC vs. Mac in Security: Experts Share Opinions

  • Reminds me of my first Macvirus.... it was the previous week...

My good ol' G4 iMac died because my brother downloaded a screensaver because he said mine would look soooo crappy... If I listened to him I could've said no 'cuz he asked me before... without listening to him and not thinking i said yes and my mac was dead... What do we learn? Listen to people using your mac... and trust you AV by the way!

  • funny video!

  • so what would this do if you didnt catch it?

  • Is tis a joke? It's gotta be. Firefox downloaded the app and Sophos detected the payload, but did the payload infect the host? Because each and every variant of RSPlug i've seen requires the user to supply admin credentials. I mean, what type of virus needs to be installed?

  • @Eddyisgreat

It's not a Virus, it's Malware. It's designed to install not only it's player onto your PC, but other applications as well. It's all in the ToS, that third part, and such programs are included. It's a good thing Antiviruses know what to detect even before they're installed. ^_^

  • WOOAH HEY HEY

  • Bull.

  • YEAH, but pc's downloads the trojans and viruses just by browsing the web. you don't even have to download any programs.

  • @jenseman1111

...you. you are missing something. something very IMPORTANT. What is downloaded when browsing the web is a function of the web BROWSERRRRR.

That has nothing to do with the operating system.

I've just been trolled, haven't I? God damn it.

  • ooh there's the funky music again, PURE FAGGOT

  • I have never used a Mac but I think they suck....

  • @mrdeersniper i am a mac user only the games sucks

  • *Laughs insanely* I am going to remember this...FOREVER! XDDD

  • yes i agree the best anti soft ware is frome apple becouse it will really block out alot of viruses and it blocked out some that i had no clue about and it really makes a difference

  • @r1keh PC is universally accepted as a term which applies to Windows based computers. Macs aren't PCs. Macs are Macs. Macs run a different operating system and are designed better than your average PC.

  • @r1keh Once you go Mac, you never go back.

  • I'd like to find the people who make this malware and Beat thier nuts with a meat tenderizing mallet!!

  • Well let's think here, who would profit from it the most? That's the best motive for anybody to do anything. Without malware these independent security software developers would be out of a job. That's right, the very same people who provide AV solutions are in fact writing the very malware they then protect you from.

That and middle aged geeks living in their moms basements with far too much time on their hands.

  • i know there are at least 10 viruses for mac

i have got 3 viruses of the same kind at one time

    they all were W97M.story

  • VIruses are possible to get because of the extremely naive (lack of a nicer word) if you download some software you need from a company you have never heard of... chances are its not to be pretty either that or P2P Sites (Frost\Lime wire)

  • im just using a mac to get less viruses than pcs alot less cause most people use pcs

  • "Woah Hey Hey!" lolz

  • quote from Sophos "Oh, and Windows users shouldn't feel too smug about this either. If you visit the site on a Windows computer, it will serve up a malicious Windows executable from the Zlob family of malware rather than a Mac OS X Trojan horse."

  • please send me the link to this

  • what is this about?? wierd!

  • preacherman, you are a moron. i own a mac, and i had virus on it. its a computer with intel chips after all. windows is very stable if you don't have shit on it and use drivers/software that are approved by windows.

  • Wow - in defense of this idiocy, you call me a name? How mature and intelligent.

You have demonstrated your own lack of knowledge. Viruses are not processor-specific, they are Operating System specific (or specific to the software running under various operating systems). There are ZERO viruses that affect Apple computers running the latest OS versions. Period. (there was a supposed trojan that was embedded in a free download of iWork that failed to execute). Name ONE working OSX virus!

  • Preacher, I can't name one working OSX virus, but I can name a working OSX trojan: OSX.RSPlug. At least Apple thought it serious enough to block the A variant with XProtect (new in Snow Leopard). You can see that if you look in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.plist

    Hope that helps.

  • preacher you got burned by asunfriere. there are viruses for mac.

  • Wow - you can mirror lies and misquote statements.

Can you not read? There are ZERO viruses for OS X - ZERO.

The trojans require intentional installation of the specific code, and even in those cases, could not replicate itself after the install. They were utter failures.

So - again, I await evidence that there are any real and functional viruses (or trojans) for OSX.

  • OSX.Trojan.iServices.A Trojan Horse is a virus spread in p2p. you moron .. MAC OSX has VIRUSES TOO.. no viruses for linux so far :)

  • now that is just one .. if you google OSX viruses you will get some interesting results you imbacile. now go cry to ur mom and tell her raja221 PWNED me

  • @Raja221 We're talking about viruses in the wild for Mac. We're not talking about viruses in downloadable, pirated versions of Apple's iWork '09. The bottom line is there just aren't any viruses for OS X in the wild. Mac users don't even need anti-virus, and they can surf the web without any worries.

  • cause no one uses it, its about as secure as a windows pc, its just more people use windows thus viruses are targeted towards windows machines. Learn your shit and shut the fuck up before you say sumthing faggot.

  • That is pretty much correct, and for some reason people don't acknowledge that fact. Windows machines are targeted exponentially more heavily, as is IE as a browser, not only because far more people use it but because they are seen as the "evil empire" so to speak.

However, that is not the "only" reason. MAC's are much more secure out of the box. You can make Windows very safe with some tweaking, if you know how, but most end users don't... hence the problems.

  • @JunmaiShu Thank goodness nobody uses IE anymore, eh? (I still think it's hilarious that they stopped making IE for macs, like, five years ago.) But really, out of the box protection isn't *exactly* an inherent aspect of the OS, is it? The real bottom line should be that both are equally likely of getting viruses IF you go browsing the web like a twat clicking on all the popup links you can find and downloading suspicious programs. If not, you'll probably be fine with any ol antivirus software.

  • Yeah pretty true, but IE8 is much better than it's predecessors. If you autostart in private browsing mode + in-private filtering, smart screen filter and a good hosts list it can be very safe. I do prefer the customization of FF though. And of course some good sandboxing can make any browser safe. Using a LUA.

There are plenty of means out there to keep us safe. It pretty much comes down to the know-how & willingness of the end user to implement them.

  • You are a moron, LOL.

There are Mac, Linux and Windows malware. Look for them and you will it.

  • /watch?v=O-rLIRDJRuo&feature=related is a proof of trajan on mac osx on youtube. now prove me wrong thepreacherman.

  • Moron? You have not named a single virus to back up your claim. The Trojan you mention is STILL not functional in the "wild".

I just don't see how calling someone a "moron" helps prove your faulty viewpoint.

  • it is fuctional in teh WILD its on P2P. and besides that .. check out this video .. from sophos it shows u macs do have viruses in teh wild. did you do ur google research to support ur claim? NO u didnt. so dont talk about something u know nothing about. I guess watching all the MACFAG ads from apple brainwashed you.

  • Apple hasn't brainwashed Jack. Your claims have no evidence other than the extremely rigged results of a company that stands to profit from their engineered "Tests".

And calling people names does not indicate intelligence, nor does it make your argument convincing... quite the contrary.

  • FINALLY

they started to make malware for macs because people started using them

too bad that company that made pcs with mac on them got bankrupt

but for people that cant get over priced shit which is called apple

can use many typed of hack and software so u could use it on ur pc

  • retarded user, browser exploit, system vunerability, etc. It does not matter how maleware entered yout system. It still a malicious program that you do not want on your computer.

  • Nice!

  • why do i feel it's an exploit done by sophos.

  • Because you're an elitist brainwashed mac user

  • @WCCobra its a computer....

  • @WCCobra fucking twat

  • derrrr. it says exe but i'll download it anyhow. duhhhhh. why do i always get viruses. derrrrr. ill click on anything with funky music. derrrrrrrr. im a republican. derrrrr.

  • high-five

  • Diddo.

  • Is this the great Firefox? É essa a confiabilidade do Firefox? Para mim é Mozilla Firefroxa.

  • Yes it is Firefox.

  • and i thought Windows were the computers that could get viruses. Finally I'm proved wrong.

  • Sure, though you're much more likely to get malware on a PC, because of the current state of the computer industry, which has around 90% windows machines. Just saying.

  • plus the fact that macs are more expensive on average so their users are more likely to have the dough to buy anti virus software making it even less prudent to try to even start making viruses on a mac

  • There can be viruses for any platform (os) but the people who make viruses want to target the mass majority of people, and that happens to be Windows PC's.

  • @applesandjam uhh so you're saying not a lot of people have mac's? thats why youtube is filled with about 10x more apple reviewers than windows?.. thats why the apple store is constantly full of people? 1/4 to 1/3 of the students at my uni campus own a mac.. just because there are more windows users doesnt mean targeting apple users is a lost cause. it would actually be easier to do since all apple users say things like "we cant get viruses" so they don't use anti-viruses..

  • @lalalahaha1234 malware is designed to hack the creators desired os
