@jason0261 Replying kinda late, and u probily have the answer, but its so they have less resistance in the water, its supposed to make them glide more because the suits are supposed to resist water, in theory, making them faster.
i swim this event for my high schools swim team. we have a 25m pool so its 4 laps compared to their 2 laps in their 50m pool. i also swim the 500m free, but that a lot harder.
@twinkie2082 i'm on my high school's swim team in US, Florida. out of the races you listed the only ones we have in America are the 50m, 100m, and the 200m. we also have the 500 here. i do not know the races in Canada, Japan or any other place for that matter. what i do know is the races in my own country, were the 500m is the longest race we have.

Ai Shibata (21= Kanoya Taidai) won a gold medal at the final at the girl 800-meter free style at 8 minutes 24 seconds 54. Japanese girl's gold medal is the fourth person in the swimming race Kyoko Iwazaki since then of the breast stroke the Barcelona Olympics 200 meters 1992 year in history. The medal in Japan in the girl free style is the first time.
notice that the swimmer that won the race was about the only one that didn't have anything covering her legs? Why do women bother doing that?
