I personally find Vale's performance of the song rather cool (I actually prefer DS' version over his). Richard Harris, while not "performing" quite as well as Vale, sings the song with a warmth and sensitivity that Vale lacks. It's as though he has *lived* what was written and it has changed his heart. Only Wayne Newton comes close.
To KingofMonroe: No, this is not about a cake. It's the greatest love song ever written. Those who have experienced a very deep love and lost it, for whatever reason, will tell you so. Jimmy Webb was also quoted as saying so. He wrote the song, so I think he probably knows what the song "means."

There is no one who renders this song as well as Jerry Vale. The ending is unbelievably strong!

This is the most vivid of all Mac Arthur PArk I have ever heard.
But Richard Harris has high and unique power in some sections of this song.

Much better than the version by Richard Harris. Like the comment above...Harris was an actor not a singer.

Jerry's brilliant, ringing tenor voice is wasted on this stuff.

Easily the best recording of this song, Richard Harris was actor who more or less, talked through the song.
