I thought I had it right the first time. I politely offered to Hythloday that I may have misiniterpreted what you said, and that I should be more attentive. He seems to have convinced himself that he has all the answers, and you are right, if he can explain self-awareness, self conception, or sentience, then he should back up his statements. The Hofstadter model is only good for understanding how man-made programs can exhibit humanoid behaviour, but it does not explain self-awareness.
