Even better: he made a conscious effort to "come out" as an openly gay man prior to going to the Olympics. He wanted to let the world know that he was a proud gay man, and didn't want to wait until after he had won a gold medal or had other fame to offset what many people might consider to be a "less than popular" description of himself. Too bad NBC didn't have the guts to cover that aspect of his life. They covered other athlete's bofriends and girlfriends, but only when they were straight.
