Hi all, I am from Singapore. I think Samantha did a great job.
Although our obedience rules are difference from yours, I can see very good team work in the handling. I know exactly how hard it is to train children to handle dogs for trial.
I am currently training my 5 years old son for obedience trial in Singapore. he saw this video & say he want to train & handle our Border Collie like Samatha. Thanks for posting & the encouragement.
For age 7 this is great handling. I wonder, though, is anyone having fun here? The dog certainly is not. He is listening to her but he disenages and loses focus quickly and he is not wagging his tail. Maybe this all comes in time and it can be nerve racking when you are out there, but, I wonder what training methods were used with this dog...I would be surprised if it were operant conditioning.
@dirkgentlyus Well maybe they did use a lot of compulsion training the dog, but it's very possible they didn't. I trained mine using mostly positive training methods, and she does the same thing in trials. Plus, it's her parent's dog, so the close teamwork isn't quite there since she didn't train him herself. She is a very talented handler though, I met her at Nationals, and not only is she talented, but she's adorable to boot.
@TheLongestNickHere - Obedience is not about "domination." It is about partnership and communication. This young lady is clearly communicating effectively with this dog, which is responding to her beautifully. As a professional dog trainer I can tell you that a dog does not generalize - meaning a trainer cannot train so that a dog obeys another person. Even if another handler started this dog, this girl could not be effective if the dog did not respect her personally. She does a great job.
@Savant74656 Situation: Security person hands his perfectly trained guard dog to a 2nd person during presentation. 2nd person holds the leash, commands the dog, dog attacks security person (owner!!!) and let go after another command. So, well trained working dogs just follow orders and not people. Obedience is absolut about domination and not about partnership.
@NoaAikane Are you kidding me? Obedience is 100% about teamwork, partnership, and willingness to work for the handler, and nothing to do with domination. Unless you're an old school trainer. Have you ever trained a dog to this level? I seriously doubt it. My dog is not very high drive or motivated by toys or food, and crumbles under the slightest pressure, yet because we're a close team, she's performed beautifully at two Nationals so far. Placed third in one, and won the other.
As a professional dog trainer, I can tell you that you are completely wrong. A dog does generalize obedience commands. What makes a difference is how the commands are presented. You can not ask an everyday pet owner to handle a schutzhund or service dog and expect the handling to be smooth. The dog will sense lack of confidence or the difference in handlers. If a dog cant be handled by different handlers than the dog has insecurities and would not be schutzhund titled.

Cute girl - but no impressive situation. As LRCgalaxist said - everybody can command a well-trained dog and there is no way this girl educated the dog.
@bbmtge Not ignorant at all, it´s just the truth. I own big dogs, too and my 4yrs old walked them. So, I know it´s not a big deal for a 7yrs old walking a well trained dog. Fact!
It's kinda cool how a little kid is showing the dog, but it's not really /impressive/. Plenty of people can command a well-trained dog. It's not like she trained it. But still, kudos to her. Girl got more guts than me at this point and I'm 11 years older!
Such a fantastic performance! And, this dog is in no way doing this out of "fear". This kind of performance takes confidence on the part of BOTH dog and handler. That Samantha has this kind of confidence and self-possession at her age - well, I'm scared of what she's gonna do when she grows up - look out world! And, yes, I DO have obedience titles and have done extensive training with my dogs - so I know whereof I speak.
@sockerloppan Clearly u don't really understand dog body language. You claim the dog is "scared like hell". Dogs that are scared put their ears down and their tail lowers. This dog has erect ears and is carrying it's tail normally. Therefore you are wrong, and it is not scared.
I don't know where your comment is based on but it's pure nonsens!!! If this dog is trained 'the old fashion way' you'd really think this girl can carry out this kind of routine which such a dog...that dog wouldn't do a thing, because this kind of routine has very little obligation from the girl, because a child isn't able to put a lot of pressure on a dog...
Who is this girl? To be this young and to have total control of an animal of this size is absolutely unheard of. The biggest congratulations to Samantha on a job well done!!!!
She received 91 points. This a the VPG III routine because of the Running Stand exercise and because the Retrieve on the Flat is done with the 1 Kilo dumb-bell.
Awesome!.... The future of USA has never looked this good! Great job Glyn, Pedro and way to go T!!! This student did all of you good... So proud to know her!
