A Santa Fe newspaper from about 1850 featured an account about a storm that caused the Santa Fe River to run over its banks and badly flood the town center. My great grandfather's house and several others were destroyed when the flood literally pulled the walls down around them.
I grew up by the Santa Fe river. I remember when it used to run with more regularity, back in the 60's and 70's. Then they started choking it off up at the dams and most of the big cottonwoods of my childhood died. Some of them were huge, more than six feet in diameter. Now there's tons of invasive reeds. I wish you all the best of luck in getting that pretty little river running again. Step one: no more water hogging golf courses!
lol - we always made jokes about that river - it doesnt even deserve to be called one most of the year but i have seen many a people get their cars stuck in it when it was flowing lol.
I work in Milwaukee on the Kinnickinnic River which you may have noticed is also on the american rivers list of most endangered. I just wanted to wish you all the best in your work and offer solidarity to all those working to protect and revitalize water resources.
Great job, I lived there and once when I tutored on a volunteer basis I took a girl who was my student out to the river with a forest guardian who told her about the projects you have done. Including planting trees. His name was Bill. If you talk to him ever give him my email address at this site please! Thanks,
