McAvoy's accent in this film sounds far more British than Irish and seeing as McAvoy really has a Scottish accent and that is pretty close to Irish, he should have changed his accent only a tad. Then it would fit better since he is playing a Irish character.
The essence of LOVE is in all Jane Austen's books...for me, she was and still is the best writer ever...She was independent, and she wasn't afraid about living by her pen...
Jane is not offended. She is completely flustered upon hearing "As opposed to a lover?" because she keenly feels the heat of the attraction between her and Tom....as evidenced by what unfolds in the forthcoming scene! James McAvoy....sigh. Also riveting in "Atonement".
She was offended that it turns out that she was pursuing both a husband and a lover. She had no passion for Wisley but was with him at the ball, and on the other hand she danced with Tom,which means "You are pursuing a husband-Wistley but also a lover-me".
I think I get it now.Tom meant that she had shown passion towards him, because she showed passion when she danced with him(he said "You dance with passion").She has shown no passion towards Wisley who's supposed to be her husband(like she said "No sensible woman would demonstrate passion,if the purpose were to attract a husband"),but towards him who can be nothing else but her lover she HAS shown passion. That's why he said "As opposed to a lover?" or "As opposed to me?"
Before Tom says "as opposed to a lover" he takes a look at Wisley,so I belive that because he doesn't know of Wisley's proposal he lookes at him like Jane's(supposed)lover. But he would've said "or a lover".Oh,I have no idea.
There is a bit of miscommunication because at this point in the film, Tom is not aware of Wisley's marriage proposal to Jane. Her comment reflects that she would only dance with passion if she were interested in someone as a potential husband. When he implies as a lover she is taken aback as to how to respond because she knows he can't offer marriage without money of his own, yet a relationship less than that could harm her reputation, reflecting the circumstances and times they live in.
I'm not exactly positive, however, I think Tom is suggesting that he's interested in her as a lover, and she of course is interested in more. Neither one of them at this point are aware that the other is in love. They don't make their love known until he goes to her at the pond.
Jullian Jarrold mentions in the DVD audio commentary that McAvoy suggested the back to back in this scene for dramatic effect. I think it's brilliant and very sexy.
This whole film is incredibly sexy...and nothing but chaste kisses and some hand holding...WOW! 2 stunning actors with incredible romantic chemistry (OMG James McAvoy is hot) I bawl my eyes out at the end every time (I know...pathetic)
James and Anne have great chemistry in this movie. I would love to see them in something else. This movie just breaks my heart. I knew that Jane Austen never married but I never knew that she once was in love.
i got to agree with you liasonheart...they both did an amazing job...i was literally crying at the end when i found out that jane austen never married..and that these two lovers could never be together...
I balled my eyes out! they were so in love and he gave her his everything. And eve though in the end when she broke it off they both became succesful. But i guess if it didnt happe then we wouldt have the greatest english novels! god jane was so stupid! but he still thought of her all those years by aming his daughter after her
What would you want her to do ruin his family make his family strave..She loved him enough to know that he would end up feeling bad with himself if he married her she wasn't stuipd.
well when he said she danced with passion, she said it was the purpose to attract a husband and he said: opposed to a lover. i think he means tht he is her lover & she danced more passionatly w/ her lover and i think thts the way he had told her, he has fallen in love with her. (thats the way I see it)
I disagree. She says "No sensible woman would demonstrate passion if the purpose were to attract a husband" motioning toward Wisley so when he says "as opposed to a lover" he's propositioning her...the scamp...and why he offends. He doesn't really declare his feelings for her until the kiss.
Right! The weird dynamic back then was that 'passion' was not considered something that would secure a husband (only a lover). Jane Austen struggles with that in her novels, too. I like to think we have moved on!
two: men like tom lefroy existed in real life (or if they do, i wish theyd find ME)
three:this movie had the happy ending we were all hoping for (although i know its about jane and thats what actually happened, cant imagine how she actually felt considering i felt like my heart was being chopped into bits)
I cry everytime I see this movie. I wish James McAVory and Anne Hathway come in another movie that has a happy ending together (even its going to be totally irrelevant to this movie). They just have amazing chemistry together!
i know...when i saw the previews for it i thought they were gonna look really weird together because shes physically bigger(NOT fat, just bigger) than him, but i loved them together SOO much
I agree this is the best romantic movie I've seen lately..even if it ends on a sad not. And I'm now officially OBSESSED with James Mcavoy. I need to see every single movie with him!
i love this scene and right before where it just starts jane looks around the room for lefroy and is sad and stuff den when she sees him were this clip just starts she is glowingly happy .. she loves him aaw
They're at a dance, and she's dancing with the guy that she's supposed to marry. But LaFroy cuts in and dances with her. She pretty mush realizes she loves him but can't be with him.
I love how he said, as opposed to a lover, already telling her that he is the lover. This movie is great! He looks so handsome all dressed up spiffy and stuff.
I'm not so sure she's sad, I think she's more overwhelmed. I'm quite sure that she understands that by lover, he means himself as he has realized that he has emotions for her. Maybe there's a shred of sadness in her reaction, she doesn't really look happy... but mostly she's overwhelmed, I think.
OMG!!! I come from a family of music freaks who play this type of music for this type of dance! In fact, I personally know the fiddler in the film; his name is Aiden Broadbrige (he also was the fiddler in "Pride and Predjudice" a year ago). Anyway, that particular tune is called "Hole in the Wall" and said to be named for the hole in the wall in A Midsummer's Night Dream that the rag-tag theatre troupe speaks through in their little skit thing.
i just saw this movie today. the begining was pretty slow and dull... i was beginning to regret watching it and then this scene came up and i was pulled in. john mcavoy is sooo hot. the color of his eyes is so pretty...
Everyone in the UK will have to give us, me definitely, a list of the deleted scenes and maybe someone can put them online. I cannot wait until someone put Becoming Jane online!!!!!
I have the soundtrack too and was wondering the same thing. I've been looking for that piece on the cd as well. I think it's another variation (for violin) of "Bond Street Airs".
Does anyone know what is the name/title of the piece of music that is playing when Jane and Tom are dancing in this clip. I have the soundtrack for the movie but it is not on there, please help!
If you are still wondering the name of the piece is "Lady Gresham's Ball: The Hole In the Wall". You can buy the song from iTunes. It also comes as a bonus track (there are many) if you buy the soundtrack from iTunes.
I really love this song but I am Canadian and I can't get it off iTunes. I also had a lot of trouble with limewire. Does anyone know where else I can get it?
I found out from an earlier post that this piece was composed by Henry Purcell, it is an english country dance (as in Becoming Jane!). I looked all over the web to see if you can purchase it on a recording of any kind other than iTunes, but no luck...I wish I could send it to you.
You are welcome. You can get the sheet music on the web! It is a very simple and beautiful tune to play on the piano, like Jane was playing towards the end of the movie (sob!)
so I am TRYING desperately to make my first video, but I have not the slightest idea how to get the clips from this movie that i am trying to get. HOW DO I GET THEM INTO MY iMOVIE APPLICATION?? help!!
I used to have it saved on my computer, and I just found out that the person who posted it had to remove it because of legal reasons Now, we have to see it in theaters, or wait for the dvd to come out.
i loved this movie sooooo much, cnt believe its not outon dvd 4 another month!this clip wud b so much better if the whole dance was in the clip,it ws probably my favourite part of the movie!
I live in Garrett County, MD and this movie is not near where I live. I hope we get it eventually. Until then I will hope that we get The Nanny Diaries at the end of this month. I hope we get it. I really, really want to see it.
For first screening of Becoming Jane in the US, check the US Official Site. And I've just found that the music for this ball is the same with the ball scene of Emma 1997 (with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong), scene/chapter 8 on the DVD, about 1 hour 3 minutes into the movie. I still prefer the BJ one, for it's slower in beat than the Emma one. I can't find out the name of the music score, though.
hey! i just thought you might like this movie: North and South. Another Jane Austen classic. Beautiful film! Beautiful characters! If your impressed with this trailer you should seriously check out this movie. Let me know if you can't find a link for it.
My friend has directed me to the title: 'Hole in the Wall' by English composer Henry Purcell. I've been browsing Amazon for the proper CD, there are several of them. You might want to browse becomingjane dot blogspot dot com under the Purcell post for more info.
The music is the actual music from the dancing scene. This is not a music video per se, for it's a clip. Hole in the Wall is very lovely, I adore the music now! Purcell was a genius!
this movie comes out on my b day in the us and im so excited because ive read every jane austen book and watched most of the movies made from the books right here on youtube so seeing a movie about her life will be absulutly thrilling and i cant wait
Hey, I loved Austen's "Pride & prejudice" and I have seen all 3 movies from that novel (the serial, the movie and "Bride and Prejudice". which movies are from J.A that you know about? And which novel would you recommend me to read? =) thanx a lot..
bride and prejudice is american-indian comedy. pride and prejudice is by j.a. 1995 bbc version is the best! "emma" is good, "mansfield park" is good, "northanger abbey" is very good. "persuasion" and "sense and sensibility" are ok but nothing special.
yeah I know that it is a american-indian comedy, but it is based on Jane A.'s "Pride & P." and I love that story so I definitely loved the movie=) I will try to see "Emma" today=) saw "Mansfield Park" yesterday and LOVED it.. I am like addicted to romance. lol
I loved Sense and Sensibility and the ITV movies of Persuasion, northanger abbey and mansfield park are on YouTube now if you want to check them out. Definitely read Mansfield Park if you can, i loved it.
Sense & Sensibility is on dvd. Try and see the Kate Winslet/Emma Thompson/Hugh Grant version. And i have to agree with zimzelena about North & South, it's superb. have you watched BBC production of Jane Eyre on YT? Toby Stephens is brilliant. Have Fun!
Yeah, I have seen that one with Kate W. & co. and I loved it.. Jane Eyre on YT, no havn't seen that one yet.. I will see that after finishing North & South =)
this one of the few time that the uk gets to see a movie before the u.s and i'm lonig it!!! sorry to the rest of ya, i know how it feels.the wait drives me crazy.lol
Well, I have seen the movie (duh!) and I LOVE it (duh!), and I'm dying to wait for the DVD! Oh... well... someone told me that they released the DVD in August in the US to get a better chance to shoot the Oscar. Well, if that's the case, I'm humbly waiting then...
Eh, I just got my 'Becoming Jane' soundtrack CD from HMV UK (shipped to Australia)! Wonderful musics! Such a great pity that the music for the 2nd ball (in this video) was not included... sob-sob! Hence my frequent listening to this video... How do you copy the music, by the way...
The musics are worth listening, indeed. One glitch, one BIG glitch is the exclusion of the second ball music, whatever the title is...(supposed to be a classical one, eh?). But just buy it. It has the tracks from the woods (where Tom fell), the cricket, the runaway, the Bond St (where Tom had boxing), the first ball... lovely! Just... not the second ball (sob-sob!)...
love this movie, if you can please could you post some of the ending scenes. I'm in the mood for a good cry. everyone should really go and see this film, it's fantastic, if a bit too emotional:)
Not sure of the song, but it's absolutely GORGEOUS! Hey, I've ordered the soundtrack today from HMV UK. It's 8.9 GBP, but I have to add more for shipping to Australia (have searched here, no trace of the BJ soundtrack). A friend from the IMDB board said it's full of beautiful music, so it's worth a purchase.
I absolutly adore this movie. any chance you can put the Experience is vital clip on Utube? it shows James McAvoy (Tom Lafroy) at his cheekyest! i love it
I like the reaction of the lefroy's after they dance lol

I could not find Becoming Jane on Veoh? Is it still there?
gwendolyn6 4 years ago
I used to have it saved on my computer, and I just found out that the person who posted it had to remove it because of legal reasons Now, we have to see it in theaters, or wait for the dvd to come out.

I don't watch television but I saw a trailer the other day on tv and it's coming out sometime in August.
SOrry.. but I'm pretty sure it will be up on some websites in a couple weeks. I remember to let you know!

hey! i just thought you might like this movie: North and South.

Good luck!

question:
I'm a bit confused. Is Becoming Jane, the actual film on this site or music from it?
nimashukri 4 years ago
The music is the actual music from the dancing scene. This is not a music video per se, for it's a clip. Hole in the Wall is very lovely, I adore the music now! Purcell was a genius!
Icha74 4 years ago
alright.
do you know where I can watch it?
nimashukri 4 years ago
Umm... it's on the US theatre august 3 (limited) and 10 (nationwide). Google 'Becoming Jane US schedule' for that, I cannot give web address here :-(

Hey, I loved Austen's "Pride & prejudice" and I have seen all 3 movies from that novel (the serial, the movie and "Bride and Prejudice". which movies are from J.A that you know about? And which novel would you recommend me to read? =) thanx a lot..
alyaakadhum 4 years ago
bride and prejudice is american-indian comedy. pride and prejudice is by j.a. 1995 bbc version is the best! "emma" is good, "mansfield park" is good, "northanger abbey" is very good. "persuasion" and "sense and sensibility" are ok but nothing special.
zimzelena 4 years ago
yeah I know that it is a american-indian comedy, but it is based on Jane A.'s "Pride & P." and I love that story so I definitely loved the movie=) I will try to see "Emma" today=) saw "Mansfield Park" yesterday and LOVED it.. I am like addicted to romance. lol
alyaakadhum 4 years ago
You must see BBC North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell! I know, it's not J.A. but trust me-it is out of this world!
zimzelena 4 years ago
Ok, I will try to watch it now... If you can recommend others I will be happy to know=) thanx again...
alyaakadhum 4 years ago
I loved Sense and Sensibility and the ITV movies of Persuasion, northanger abbey and mansfield park are on YouTube now if you want to check them out. Definitely read Mansfield Park if you can, i loved it.
myffgryff 4 years ago
I saw Mansfield Park yesterday and I loved it... I will try to borrow it/or buy it... Can I find Sense & Sensibillity here on YouTube? thanx =)
alyaakadhum 4 years ago
Sense & Sensibility is on dvd. Try and see the Kate Winslet/Emma Thompson/Hugh Grant version. And i have to agree with zimzelena about North & South, it's superb. have you watched BBC production of Jane Eyre on YT? Toby Stephens is brilliant. Have Fun!
myffgryff 4 years ago
Yeah, I have seen that one with Kate W. & co. and I loved it.. Jane Eyre on YT, no havn't seen that one yet.. I will see that after finishing North & South =)
alyaakadhum 4 years ago
i would like to see your comment on north and south. thanks.
zimzelena 4 years ago
wives & daughters is great too, same author as N&S.

I burst into tears at the end of this film. The frustrated romance between Jane and Tom is heart-rending.

I cant believe this song isnt on the s.track how gutting!! Does anybody know what the song is called??
fragglelicka 4 years ago
Eh, I just got my 'Becoming Jane' soundtrack CD from HMV UK (shipped to Australia)! Wonderful musics! Such a great pity that the music for the 2nd ball (in this video) was not included... sob-sob! Hence my frequent listening to this video... How do you copy the music, by the way...
Icha74 4 years ago
Oh my god i was gonna by the soundtrack tomorrow (just cuz of this song!!) i cant understand why they havn't put it on?? Is it good anyway??
fragglelicka 4 years ago
The musics are worth listening, indeed. One glitch, one BIG glitch is the exclusion of the second ball music, whatever the title is...(supposed to be a classical one, eh?). But just buy it. It has the tracks from the woods (where Tom fell), the cricket, the runaway, the Bond St (where Tom had boxing), the first ball... lovely! Just... not the second ball (sob-sob!)...
Icha74 4 years ago
love this movie, if you can please could you post some of the ending scenes. I'm in the mood for a good cry. everyone should really go and see this film, it's fantastic, if a bit too emotional:)
SherbetLemons123 4 years ago
Its from Becoming Jane. Lovely movie. Would anyone know what the song playing in the background is called?
afternoondelight3 4 years ago
Not sure of the song, but it's absolutely GORGEOUS! Hey, I've ordered the soundtrack today from HMV UK. It's 8.9 GBP, but I have to add more for shipping to Australia (have searched here, no trace of the BJ soundtrack). A friend from the IMDB board said it's full of beautiful music, so it's worth a purchase.
Icha74 4 years ago
I absolutly adore this movie. any chance you can put the Experience is vital clip on Utube? it shows James McAvoy (Tom Lafroy) at his cheekyest! i love it
