Kiss & Alice Cooper should've studied Bowie more closely: intelligent theatrics, intelligent songwriting, and a band comprised of truly great players.
I went to a concert at Winterland San Francisco in 1972(?) with a friend to see Bowie. I didn't know who he was beforehand. Sylvester and the Hot Band were the opening act. They were great. When Bowie came out on stage my life changed forever.
Excellent - great stuff !!! So far until now I had only seen and heard the live " Hammersmith Odeon " version used in the movie " Ziggy Stardust " and which is on his greatest hits DVD. Makes you wonder why they didn't include this version too ! It's nice to have a slightly slower live version and one with more depth from lead guitar by Mick Ronson. Thanks.
Yep for sure - the Hammersmith was good but I would love to have a dvd of this show in the earliest form of the Ziggy persona. You can tell he is really 'fresh' here and not 'rippened' as he was in the final Spiders show.
The soundtrack is Santa Monica '72 as said before and the video is from that time, but a bit of a mash-up as there probably isn't a good full version to go with the sound. The last Hammersmith gig version didn't sound as rocky IMHO. Also, Mick's guitar had a bit of tuning probs at the start, unlike this- the man was a rock legend and nice bloke.
yeah, it feel like the only music to trip to is trance techno blipity blop crap wich is seriously trippy on some buttons or tabs but that's just it- trippy. no substance. So where are the spiders? we need the children to lose it, we need the children to use it, we need the children to start boogeying godamnit... cause one night i heard papa tell mama "you better let that boy boogey woogey, cause it's in'im and it's gotta come out"... and i felt sooo goood, i boogeyed just the same, oh lord...
Actually He was the first alien spaceman to arrive on planet earth !!! From an advanced civilization. In the early 70s he frightened many lol...he was too far ahead of his time! But some of us understood him and loved it all.
yeah... bowies playing a 12 string acoustic but all you can hear is ronsons electric... so either bowie's guitar wasn't mic'd or plugged in or its an overdub.
I think "David Bowie & Mick Ronson" would have been an appropriate name for them, because Ronson's guitar-playing was a humongous contribution to Bowie's songs
Hard to believe that this was over 30 years ago already. Shit, where has the time gone. Yeah, Mick Ronson was an incredible guitarist. I was lucky enough to see him play (with Richard Thompson) in the late 80's at a small club in Santa Fe.
The image is from a Ziggy era tour but the soundtrack is NOT from the Ziggy movie, but from a Ziggy era concert. By the time the Ziggy movie was shot (last Ziggy concert @ Hammersmith), he'd developed the song into a far rockier version.
The images of the video and the sound are from different performances. I think the sound comes from the Ziggy Stardust Movie, and the images are from an earlier era.
fuckin eh!

I realy don't know if this is overdubbed....it sounds real good for a 1972 video, so maybe...
slankieboy 5 years ago
Is this overdubbed? (Meaning his performance is real but they use a studio-version of the song for the audio part? It seems off sometimes.)
julieswahn 5 years ago
yeah, seems so. Yet, the song is great. David Bowie is great!
