Marvel it's Man-Thing - Savage Tales Vol. 1 #1 (May 1971)

DC it's Swamp-thing - House of Secrets #92 (July 1971)

Comic book wise, the similarity between the two can be traced to the creators Gerry Conway and Len Wein being roommates. the characters are similar but different enough especially since DC's universe retcons. Man-thing is Dr Silis turned monster who roams the everglades, Swamp-thing is a elemental brought forth and imprinted with Dr Hollands memory when he died.

Ok, here's why a Man-Thing movie just doesn't work: It's an ugly-cute, semi-sentient monster with a convoluted back-story. It doesn't have a consistense supporting cast, and it doesn't have a real personality that you could identify with. It's not evil, and is too unintelligent to be a villian. You just can't do it unless you did a MidNight Sons or Legion of Monsters movie, neither of which-sadly-will ever happen.

I'm actually really surprised that they invested the money to make a Man-Thing film. I've followed comics since I was a kid, and rarely heard mention of this character. He's getting some publicity in Dark Reign now, and he IS an interesting character, but it'd be tough to do a movie on him with his legitimate origin. Fairly complex character.

Decent flick. Although with the way they play around with the title character it comes off as a bit more "Swamp-Thing" than "Man-Thing". With a number of comic properties that didn't quite take ,getting, and going through reboots. This is one I wouldn't mind getting rebooted. Also I'd recommend locating and checking out the prequel comic written by the flick's screenwriter, Hans Rodinoff, and drawn by the underrated Kyle Hotz. Which sets up the flick.

Man-Thing is my favorite Marvel Character. And I'm glad they gave him a movie but too many things got changed around to make him more like Swamp Thing and thus more motion picture friendly. Hes WAY too antagonistic compared to the comic book and second he does NOT have vegetation manipulation abilities. By taking away his trademark ability they pretty much neutered him.

The probably basterdized the story of Man-Thing. It's not ment to be scary or anything. Man Thing is pretty much like Swamp Thing but Man Thing represents a living enviroment. It feeds off fear.
