when you use public transport there are conditions and rules.
if an inspector asks to see your identification and you refuse or dont have any id or try to run away, they can hold you with reasonable force until the police arrive, they want their $100 after all....

Had the same thing happen to me on Tuesday, 22/07. Showed ticket to inspector twice. Was asked a 3rd time, I asked for his official ID.. BIG MISTAKE copped the same as this poor kid. but by 6 officers. Have lodged a complaint with Department of Transport & Transport Ombudsman..... Looks like I may win Video evidence shows me showing my ticket.
Ombudsman expects me to be charged with a number of offenses... 1. Refusing to show Ticket. 2. Refusing to give name and address. 3. Offensive language. 4. Traveling without a valid ticket... However as ombudsman stated official complaint lodged with both Connex Feedback and a full statement taken by ombudsman will result in an investigation.. If video shows me showing ticket twice then charges should be dropped. Video will show I did show ticket. Trouble stated because I asked for his ID

While I am not sure of statistics, people in rail industry, say from the few people who get hit every week, apart from people who are there to deliberately kill themselves, many people who get hit are just trying to run across the tracks.

You look left, then right, then left again then right again, and if there are no trains, you carefully walk across.

That's weird, most train platforms have at least three signs telling you that it is illegal to cross the tracks at level and that you can get fined for it.
Where have you seen these signs? Are they near the ticket machines or something? On the Epping and Hurstbridge lines, all of them say that there will be heavy penalties if you jump down off the platforms, but I have not seen the ones you talking about. Where are they located.

Yea, i gotta pay it. Ive learned - now to keep an eye out for the inspector rabbles as well as trains when I am crossing tracks. Why is it different? Track crossing penalties are not as well known as the jaywalking penalties. Train tracks are way less busy than roads. There are signs all over stations and trains saying what not to do, one can assume there would be a sign somewhere in Melbourne indicating there is a penalty for it considering the hyperactive use of signage connex likes.
I will continue to cross tracks where ever the hell I want as there is no safety issue what-so-ever in crossing tracks provided you look. Interestingly, you mention Jaywalking? I witnessed the fat slug (one of the inspectors whom nabbed me) and two other inspectors crossing the road illegally about 15 meters from an official pedestrian crossing. The fourth inspector broke away from them and crossed correctly. There, proof that these people are corruptible. MANY of them are not professional.
Another reason it is different is that police usually don't fine for jaywalking - this is because they are more mature professionals and understand the concept of a fair go and how to keep balanced PR with the public. They also realize that people know how to cross roads.
Ticket inspectors are more juvenile in their mentality, jumping at every opportunity to power up their egos and nab someone, thinking that kind of behavior will somehow bridge that gap between them and the true professionals.

I catch the Sydenham line 6 days a week and the amount of scumbags i share the train with astonishes me. I encounter ticket inspectors at least 3 times a week and they always act professionally and appropriately with the people they are dealing with.
I have friends in Vic Police and they are amazed by how much ticket inspectors accomplish with so little power and equipment. Most police officers i speak to wouldn't feel safe being a ticket inspector because they know exactly what they deal with.

I just got fined for crossing the tracks at the wrong place on foot.
They would not believe that I did not know it was wrong.
There is no signs saying this is illegal anywhere around here.
There is no saftey issue, as I am not blind or deaf or cripple.

I am smart enough to cross tracks and roads without the assistance of laws, sorry to disappoint you mate.
The only DUMB thing about crossing them where I want is that it is possible to get a fine for it. So I would only 'not' do it to avoid a fine, not because of safety fears.

You don't cross railroads unless there is a safe crossing point.
While I am not sure of statistics, people in rail industry, say from the few people who get hit every week, apart from people who are there to deliberately kill themselves, many people who get hit are just trying to run across the tracks.
And this is pretty bloody stressful and annoying for the drivers.

Where have you seen these signs? Are they near the ticket machines or something? On the Epping and Hurstbridge lines, all of them say that there will be heavy penalties if you jump down off the platforms, but I have not seen the ones you talking about. Where are they located.

Yea, i gotta pay it. Ive learned - now to keep an eye out for the inspector rabbles as well as trains when I am crossing tracks. Why is it different? Track crossing penalties are not as well known as the jaywalking penalties. Train tracks are way less busy than roads. There are signs all over stations and trains saying what not to do, one can assume there would be a sign somewhere in Melbourne indicating there is a penalty for it considering the hyperactive use of signage connex likes.

I will continue to cross tracks where ever the hell I want as there is no safety issue what-so-ever in crossing tracks provided you look. Interestingly, you mention Jaywalking? I witnessed the fat slug (one of the inspectors whom nabbed me) and two other inspectors crossing the road illegally about 15 meters from an official pedestrian crossing. The fourth inspector broke away from them and crossed correctly. There, proof that these people are corruptible. MANY of them are not professional.

Another reason it is different is that police usually don't fine for jaywalking - this is because they are more mature professionals and understand the concept of a fair go and how to keep balanced PR with the public. They also realize that people know how to cross roads.
Ticket inspectors are more juvenile in their mentality, jumping at every opportunity to power up their egos and nab someone, thinking that kind of behavior will somehow bridge that gap between them and the true professionals.

I catch the Sydenham line 6 days a week and the amount of scumbags i share the train with astonishes me. I encounter ticket inspectors at least 3 times a week and they always act professionally and appropriately with the people they are dealing with.
I have friends in Vic Police and they are amazed by how much ticket inspectors accomplish with so little power and equipment. Most police officers i speak to wouldn't feel safe being a ticket inspector because they know exactly what they deal with.
