  • This sounds like a Peanuts tune that would play in the background of one of their episodes. :). Black Star + Charlie Brown = Bliss :')

  • Little Brother is the most random, off key and atonal beat ever. It sounds like a little fog banging on buttons on the mpc.

These beats are soft as marshmellows, I can't ever see this being played in da clubs. This ain't hip hop -- this is elevator music!

Lex Luger 1 Jay Dilla 0

Lex is a much better producer. J Dills's beats are just boring soul loops with some boom bap drums added. Lex Luger won the best producer award at the BMI urban awards 2011.

  • @bigwy100 you are a fucking clown, dont speak if shit like that is all that comes from your tiny brain, you will live a dull life so nuf said to you,get the wax out your ears faggot

  • @bigwy100 ure lame a/f now go suck lex luger dick somewhere else

  • his name is yasiin bey not mod def he changed it

  • that beat is absolutely exquisite

  • This is how hip hop should be, No beef between artists just collaborating!

  • Dilla's best beat?

  • wheres link to questloves story?

  • thumbs up if ?uestlove's story brought u here.

  • gotdamn!!!

  • Classic.

  • Damn I just saw that ?uest interview, and i'm just speechless.... RIP Dilla

  • thank you nahright.com for the ?uestlove interview dam i dont think any of todays producers can do what he did

  • @TVOnBee whuchu talkin bout.. dilla is one of today's producer... hes not part of a fallen era.. he would be dooin it like woh if he didnt pass ...

dilla IS dope.. he IS a dope producer.. and will always be... and its not a matter of where or when he was from... its just a matter of listening to the SOUNDS in music and lettin ur soul do the speakin... dilla is NOT part of a dead era in hip hop.. he came out of NOWHERE.. and made the dopest most soulful most random beats...

  • 32, 1/2 second samples!

  • R.I.P. J Dilla

  • YO CHECK OUT

Eli G - Hold You Down

  • MUCH PROPS to the Roots, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli for performing this on Jimmy Fallon!!

  • wow, talk about hidden tracks! it's like the collab of the year

  • real talk!

  • "cant wait for opportunity to knock you gotta make it happen, it aint about no spectacular ways of rappin just immaculate ways of action" ie you better walk the walk if your gonna talk the talk lil brotha

  • Awesome sample of Roy Ayers' Aint Got Time. Since J Dilla was a huge fan of Peter Rock, I'm guessing he got inspired listening to The Main Ingredient. Peter Rock & CL Smooth used it in one of the many outros on that album.

  • @gkyazze He did. Try googling "questlove on j dilla and making of little brother" for a very interesting interview with Questlove talking about Jay Dee on this very track.

  • @bertilipsen - Thanks a bunch for that bit of info chief. I just listened to the ?uestlove interview. Fascinating stuff! I grew up on Old School Hip Hop and by the time I graduated from college in the very late 90s, the music was starting to sound stale. Unfortunately for me, that was probably around the time J Dilla's career really took off. It's only now that I'm starting to appreciate how talended he was.

  • FEMALES DON'T KNOW REAL HIP HOP

  • @cleany18 You don't know the right females....

  • @cleany18 Read all the comments before you open your mouth... I'm just sayin.

  • @IAmThatGurl read all the comments first b4 i open my mouth :S i never knew you r the only girl in the planet........ i dont know da right females yh..... its rare 2 find females like u that would care about music with lyrics, is not disrespectful on females n don't even care about the artists looks but cares about real music... plz don't come with ur quick pointless replies to me THANK YOU ¬___¬

  • @cleany18 ...come on son lol

  • @cleany18 yeah, you can make the case theyre a big reason for the demise in hip hop, IMO commercial rap is mostly aimed at these young females to make em feel good

  • was this ever on either of their albums???

  • impossible to compare.....

  • Why isn't this on Spotify's edition of Black Star??

  • damn, I had to come back n give props to dilla for this shit after I read tha ?uestlove story of tha makin. Shit is sickenin man lol

  • @djizzl XACTLY same here bruh

  • @djizzl me too!

  • If you like artists like Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Nas, and J. Cole, I think you'll like my music too. Check out my singles “BAR Exam” and “Man On Fire”, and tell me what you think. Any feedback is appreciated. I promise I don't disappoint.

  • @VINCEJisSONiCtheMC

I'd leave Cole off that list. Jay dickrider, will never be great

  • I remember reading an interveiw on ?uestlove about Dilla & this beat, & when Dilla made the beat & ?uest heard it, he wanted Dilla to put it out & Dilla said "no" bcuz Pete Rock was his idol & he didn't want to outshine him. And he only did the beat for practice. That's right...PRACTICE!!! One of the best beats EVER, & Dilla did it for PRACTICE!!! No wonder God called him home...R.I.P. DILLA

  • This is crazy..makes sense thought ....

  • Black Star and J Dilla. SUCH A GOOD COMBO

  • Dilla the great.

  • @Tavevision. Real MC's yo

  • Dilla the best sampler ever.

  • I know its a Roy Ayers sample, but what song is it that Dilla used?

  • @ArbyWanKenobi the song is called Little Brother

  • Dilla did this track? That boy bad!

  • @nickybaby77 Word, I thought the same thing too. I've been listening to this track for years, and i never knew he made it. His fingerprints are everywhere.

  • @joe5head but i 1st heard this track on the Pete Rock & CL album Mecca & the Soul Brother. It's on of the excerpts, I think at the end of the 1st track. Anyway, the sh*t is dope regardless!

  • @James1Alexander i was thinking the same thing then i scrolled down to see you already posted my exact thoughts

  • @nickybaby77 Yep, he did this one...back when he was still known as Jay Dee.

  • i love this duo!

  • little brother 8:D

  • I love this tune, thanks for sharing.

The missing lyric is "Do *speak* in a daze when the ways reveal"

Peace and love, brothers and sisters.

  • i re-recorded the album put this on it supreme supreme and history its blazing

  • why was this not on the album

  • Helping Individuals Prosper, Honoring Others Potential is H.I.P. H.O.P.! Real music

  • this isnt a dilla beat,

  • @omidabr1 it most certainly is.

  • @omidabr1 that isn't a truthful comment

  • yes it is you fool

  • @omidabr1 yes it is!

  • Little Brother did an incredible interview for a book thats called -HOW TO .RAP where they broke down their thoughts on rhyming and how they do it... book also got hold of Pharcyde, Tribe, Del, PE, Souls of Mischief, Kane, looooads of the illest MCs ever, its a really indepth book

  • @clarencejones07 yo did you write the book or something man? i've see this same post on like 5 or 6 different vids. Started at a Binary Star vid.

  • @clarencejones07 This isn't a Little Brother track yo... get it straight...

  • @IAmThatGurl yeah thats why it says black star dumbass the name of the songs little brother so yeah " get it straight"

  • @clarencejones07 Um... this isn't a Little Brother video...

  • @clarencejones07 Yo genius this video is by Black Star; not Little Brother. Please stop spamming.

  • I just heard this joint for the first time last week & i thought it was a new joint recently released. Then my folks told me this came out back in 2000 & i slept on it. Good joint.

  • Howard University listens to this!!!

  • WOW! I love this joint. I want to this type of rap for Christ though.......

  • @Tavevision Real MC's right here.

  • rr jus quality hip hop, lyrics, rap, jazz bass, tunes been so good for me

  • Happy Birthday Jay Dee. You are missed.

  • Roy Ayers, dude!

  • what's the revolution they keep referring too?

    and who's Roy Aidens?

    thx

  • @johnymorez

There's no official "revolution" Mos and Talib are referring to. It's more of an allusion to the need for black people to break through society's hurdles and create better lives for themselves.

I have no idea who Roy Aidens is though? Where is he mentioned in this song?

  • @Ginga

    Thanks i understand now

he isn't mentioned in this song

but he was mentioned in another song where they were talking about a similar revolution. :)

  • @johnymorez

No problem. Do you remember the name of the song?

  • @Ginga several songs talked about a revolution actually but the only one where they mentioned that guy was

--The perceptionists - Breathe in the sun--

  • @johnymorez

Interesting. I've searched but the name Roy Aidens only seems to come up in that song. Maybe his name is spelled wrong in the lyrics or something.

  • @Ginga Yeah that's why I asked, i searched too but I couldn't find anything.

Anyway man, thx for the trouble, I really appreciate it :)

  • @johnymorez

    Yep. Stay gold.

  • I always play this joint for the younger males (brothers) in my family.....Timeless.....

    My Top 3 Producers-

    1. J Dilla (hands down)

    2. DJ Premier

    3. Pete Rock

  • @thickcocogrl79 real talk those are my top 3! great minds think alike my nigga.

    r.i.p dilla dawg

  • @thickcocogrl79 don't forget madlib

  • @chris45322345 Madlib is dope too, if i had a top 5 I would add him and MF DOOM, but that's my top 3

  • @thickcocogrl79 Wrong order

    1) Jay Dee

    2)Pete Rock

    3) Preemo

  • @iMReCKLeSS22 Lol, everyone has their favs, I just stated mine, In the order I like...I think it's the era I grew up in, I was a young kid in the 80's, and i came of age in the 90's, an era that I consider to be a vintage era of hip hop. So to each it's own. There are many more deserving producers out there, but they all can't be my favs. That's why there's a distinction. We still have the same top 3, I just like Premier more lol

  • @thickcocogrl79 fair enough. I'd have him in my top 3 for sure but yeah its difficult to kick pete rock or preemo out haha! but dam the guys got his own one man jazz band. and then you got producers like his little bro oh no and black milk who are rising.

  • @chris45322345 I feel you Chris, but like I said in my reply to imreckless22, they're called favs for a reason, and I think all the guys you mentioned are dope, I just have my favs. We all do, lol!

  • Where would hip hop be without Roy Ayers? Some of the dopest beats are Roy samples.

  • "Served over Dilla time signatures"

  • where's this song from?

  • shout out OaklandRaiders81790 for knowin bout that sample. Yeeeeaaahh!!!!!! HIP HOP !!!

  • i wish this song went on n on n on,i've worn out the repeat button !

  • @Riddlla...Your so wrong its untrue! But i know that the only reason you could say that is coz u dont truly know how gifted Dilla was! He's SO underrated, and any recognition he gets its justified! Thats why he's dubbed "your favourite producer's favourite producer"...the people who truly know about him are those who know real music! Kanye, Pharrell, Common, Busta, Pete Rock, Erykah Badu, The Roots...they're all legends in their own right, and they speak of Dilla HIGHLY!

  • @wrayman89 It's futile to argue with a person that really don't know!

You said it best. If you're admired by your piers as the best, who the

hell else opinion matters. That kinda goes for any profession.

  • @Riddlla Artistis who have worked with him and have seen him at work, they cant believe how he's transformed a sample to what they hear, and the songs he sampled from, many of them you cant even hear where he chopped it up he was that sick! His work with Tribe and Slum V...just listen to them albums..many of those beats just whipped up in 10-15 mins!

Go educate yourself and listen to the work that got him recognised as the greatest!

If you know real hip hop then you'll know that he's the best!

  • @Riddlla hell no, u have to actually listen to everything in his beats and hear the genius of his music, his instrumentals werent just beats for ppl to listen to, there were more of ways to escape any bullshit goin on

  • Takes me back!

    CLASSIC SHIT RIGHT HERE!

  • classic hiphop untouchable,r.i.p j dilla

  • this is my shit yo rip dilla

  • right on

  • anyone have this instrumental?

  • Real Rappers right here.

  • @Tavevision Real producer right here

  • oh shit ima thug and thats all i can say...who are you anyway?

if its real who need a deal wit the special effects

  • Comment removed

  • Can't believe this song is 10 years old already...literally. This song could've came out today and I wouldn't have noticed because it's so timeless.

  • Do *speak* in a daze when the ways reveal

    maybe?

    mad track

  • Pete Rock is still shit too! When they reminisce over you my god!!

  • how the fuck do i download this song for free i been lookin 4 it errywhere

  • u goin have to pay unless u know black star

  • man, this one of them tunes you just keep in rotation and smack somebody hand for touching the control to turn this joint off....

  • Ridiculously ill.

  • Damnnnn i didnt know Dilla was ond dis SHIT MANN Big UpS !!!!

  • The most wonderful song ever created by Black Star...this songs make me smile and think of college back at the Atlanta Unviersity Center.

  • Even though this song is old, it's still chippin...

  • this was on "The Hurricane" soundtrack.

  • pete rock did this beat back in 94. waay before black star and dilla were doing anything big.

  • No he didn't, google Questlove little brother beat story for info on how Dilla did it.

  • But listen to the last 22 secs of Pete Rock & C.L. smooth - In the house. It came out in 94. If Im wrong then I will accept defeat and learn something.

  • Dilla made this in 1999 by using the same sample as Pete Rock just for practice in his basement, Kweli salvaged a 15 second sample of it on cassette and looped it for the instrumental, it's not the Pete Rock Interlude.

  • Ok I yield....

  • haha, i understand what your sayin an all

but lets admit, pr and jd are interexchangeable...the best of the best

  • yeah dilla took the same sample and outdid pete. pete's great man, one of the greatest, but dilla is THE greatest

  • J-dillas amazing but nah man. Pete Rock and DJ Premier did it first and are the trailblazers

  • each to his own

  • it is hard to give up the trophy of best producer of all time to only dilla or premier. both are legendary

  • @JAMFKru wuts the name of the original pete rock song i wana hear it, thanks

  • it's the outro to "in the house" on pete and c.l.'s "main ingredient" album

  • @OaklandRaiders81790 it was sampled by diamond d first like back in 92. it could of been showbiz though, i cnt really remember, but i know it was done back in 92.

  • what year was this released?

  • Dilla just really outshine pete rock on this one

  • ok i heard thieves in the night then i heard respiration but this cemented it for me blackstar is my new fav. this is real hip hop and what theyre speaking about is the realist.

  • word...thieves in the night is one of the illest tracks ever made....k.o.s. and 2000 seasons are mean as hell 2...

  • sick made

    Black Star With J. Dilla

    R.I.P. 2 J. Dilla & Michael Jackson

  • kweli killed this shit

  • i love this beat

    RIP Dilla

  • SONG IS FUCKNG DUMB!!!

Ive never heard it before, I only saw the movie earlier this year. The song sounds like they just made it

Mos and Talib connect with each other really well

As for Dilla, him dying is just too serious.

He had a style that no else could have or duplicate. He took it with him in his grave

and none of us will ever hear it again.

He retired as the King of Beats.

I wonder how his music would of sounded now?????????????????????????????????????

    RIP James Yancey

  • No beef but that kind of thinkin

is gonna keep other producers who are just as good under

    dudes shadow

  • movie? what movie this is on??

  • Comment removed

  • this was on the album i do not remomber it i should have kefter it after all these years when are they goinging to make another black star album?
