I went to that town a few years back, and went into the pub. Had a pint of ale-which was fine. But I also tried a sandwich made with some kind of dripping rather than our modern butter. It was bloody awful. But I don`t regret the experience.
Does anyone know how many shillings were in a crown? This man sure is a miser. You'd think he'd want to keep his employee happy but wealthier people I've found didn't get that way by being nice always. Reminds me of a lady in the 1800's who became a millionare. She was so cheap that when her son got sick she went running around the big city they lived in trying to find a doctor that would treat him for free. He died while she was doing it. It's in a book of records somewhere.
How about those marital infidelities that make this "respected, stand-up business/family man" into a BIG FAT HYPOCRITE!! The Old Lady blew it cuz now he'll cut her out of his Will ~~ but the Daughter who "heard the whole sordid conversation" is a sharp cookie & will 'hold her mug' til it serves her best! lol That'll serve that crabby Dad of hers Right!! /^_~\\

@Songsmirth 10-15 Shillings a week in 1913/1914 is nothing. Even then that was really low.

How much nicer would it be to come home and unwrap the cigars or chocolate you just bought, instead of just taking it out of a plastic bag?
