My family is from Marfa (and Fort Davis) and on the surface if you don't take the time to slow down and unwind in the town, you won't "get" it. Try exploring more next time because even if Marfa isn't your thing, there's so much natural beauty in the area...next time go down to the Big Bend and take a raft trip through Santa Elena Canyon, or drive through the Davis Mountains. Take a swim at Balmorhea, hike up Mt. Livermore or Guadalupe Peak. Go to a Star Party at McDonald Observatory.
I don't think so many would've been so "butt hurt" if you hadn't sounded so disgusted. Barfa, although not exactly vulgar, doesn't seem to be in line with your ability to find beauty in your surroundings. As an artist it comes across as extremely closed minded. makes you seem shallow. Idk you so I can't say that that's the case. I do understand the aspect of being underwhelmed but there is a characteristic beauty about that place, and not everyone can appreciate that.
Let's see...In 45 minutes you managed to miss: eating breakfast at Cochineal, lunch at Food Shark or Pizza Foundation, a tour of Donald Judd's installments, Dan Flavin's work, "The Last Supper" exhibit (Andy Warhol), shuffleboard or pinball at Padre's, Ping-Pong at Planet Marfa, sleeping in a yurt or a yacht at El Cosmico, Ballroom Marfa, Prada Marfa, the Giant memorabilia and a beer at the historic Paisano Hotel, and the Marfa Lights just so you could get back to Austin to watch a movie. Wow.
@raderred I like how everyone is really butt hurt that I hated Marfa. The things I'm into just didn't align with what Marfa had to offer. I'm glad you like it, but none of that sounds like fun to me at all. I'd rather people watch and street shoot in a place that doesn't look like a post apocalyptic wasteland. Not everyone can like everything you like.
Yeah.. there is nothing in Marfa. It's empty, like your head. The content of your videos is so conceited it is awful. You seem to think you are the center of the universe. You are Barfa. NOT Marfa. In one of your other videos your weird, ugly ass boyfriend asks how you got so gorgeous. WHAT? You ain't nothin! You're not pretty! And that other video with the holiday pom poms? Go hand out at Hobby Lobby why don't you! You are the reason people leave austin and move to Marfa!
Hey nobody asked you to go to Marfa so why don't you stop acting like your all perfect you don't shit rainbows do you?no you don't!you think your all fancy and better then people in Marfa just because you live in austin?your just a hater so why don't you stop talking shit about other peoples town
Marfa's in the little things. The red pop of an ocotillo cactus bloom. A giant Donald Judd concrete box in the middle of a field reflecting the shifts of light throughout the day, John Chamberlain's crunched up cars, Claes Oldenburg's horseshoe, the Marfa lights, and all the other super-cool stuff you missed taking the video from inside the car.
@djartranch Right. Because you were with us and know what we went to see.
The little things weren't enough to keep us there for the 12 hours it would've taken for us to see Marfa lights. I dont' know why everyone is so defense of Marfa and acting like I didn't "get it." Not everyone can like being in the desert.
Wait! Not thrilled??? HELLO!!!? the DOLLAR GENERAL!!!!! You were here for 45 minutes and did NOT visit the DG. Please, you could even find fine furnishings for your pretend home. and SODAS! And, wait, there is this GUY named Donald Judd, you might want to type into GOOGLE. but, Guess what...We're glad you're back in Austin too.. please stay there.
the only reason i know marfa exists is because i have a james dean obsession and his last film, "giant" was filmed there, and it always made me want to go.
well, i've lived in texas all my life and yeah- marfa is not one of my favorite cities... san antonio is awesome though. you should check out sa next time... it woulda only been an hour from austin, too. =)
it's nice seeing more videos I thought the trip sounded really cute sleeping in Josh's van watching sunrise but I suppose if that was it, it would have been barfa :)
Wow the photos were brilliant! There was such a serenity in them that was very pretty. I couldn't imagine visiting a place so dead though... Nice to look at in a book but yeah as you say, not going on my "to do" list.
You're way too hard on yourself about your videos. You're actually a lot more interesting than you give yourself credit for. Here's a topic: don't you have tattoos? You should talk about those or something.
Wow. I guess Marfa will not be one of the stops I make if I ever went to Texas... but! I did enjoy this video! :) It was nice seeing the footage you got (footage. makes it sound like you went on a discovery channel trip.)! It was like traveling for me, except not really being there. So it was definitely fun! This was a good idea for a video. I totally am excited to see your pictures! They always turn out so... beautiful, for the lack of original words.

marfa's a fun place to visit when there are events going on, otherwise it's just really boring... at least you don't have to live here

I like how the footage you took while driving almost makes it look like everything in Marfa is slanted by 10 degrees.

did you guys see the marfa lights?
letthebeatrok 11 months ago
@letthebeatrok We didn't because we couldn't find anything we wanted to do for the next 10ish hours we would've had to wait to see them. =/

@Cohenism Probably just the exposure settings on the camera.

@Cohenism That's not her - it's Marfa.

@Cohenism That's not her doing. It's Marfa's, but she will surely take credit for it.

@rawrlassie A lot of people really love Marfa, but I'm really not sure why. It's just a ghost town with some mediocre art.
Photos soon!
