  • Did you ever get this sorted or find a solution? I have the same problem with my late 2008 macbook pro (unibody, removable battery) and it's driving me insane. If i use headphones the sound sporadically switches to internal speakers.

  • my headphones don't even fit.

  • Same shit with Bose Noise Canceling and Optical.

  • same problem on my new macbook.. got sennheiser hd518.. and i am fucked up!

  • I myself have a DJ quality SONY headphone and cant enjoy it because of this. I think its intentional as the iPhone earphone does not do this, shame on you Apple!

  • same problem. anyone find a fix?

  • U should listen to house

  • I'm glad I'm not alone with this problem! Thanks for posting!

  • Same problem here..

  • OK, go to System Prefrences and then to Sound, and then Output. Plug your earphones (or ext speakers) in and out and see if the Name and Type change from Internal Speakers to Headphones. When I did this my problem was solved.

  • @MrSolidnstrong thank you this worked for me

  • hes a wizard!!!

  • Monster cables, my friend. Better leads.

  • Plug the headphones into the headphone jack. Click Start. Select Control Panel. Click Hardware and Sound. Locate Sound and select Manage audio devices. Select Speakers; a green check mark appears. Click Properties. Make sure to select the 3.5 mm jack and enable device usage. Click OK.

  • @greeni01 we are talking about a prob with the macbook not some pc or other click start contol panel dont exist smart arse!!!

  • same problem here.

  • Other problem - probably same reason. I used my MBP wired to the HIFI to watch movies on my TV for months now and suddenly, it didn't work anymore. So, I thought my jack connecter was dead but it appears that it still works with the original apple earphones ... is there any way to solve it ? Let me know if you find out

  • @tsimonetto Same here,it only works with apple earphones, guess it goes deeper in the jack.

  • @japasetelagoas Apparently my problem came from my audio setting that wasn't set properly due to a USB headset I'd plugged several days before.

  • I have just found the need to plug in a standard 3.5mm jack plug to link my MBP (2011 17" UB) to my Hi-Fi. Firstly, I was amazed when I purchased this new MBP (a replacement for my 'recently deceased' earlier MBP) to discover that there isn't even a remote control (as my last MBP had). Amazing for a laptop costing £2,100!

Tonight, I plugged in the 3.5mm jack and was horrified at the build quality and 'loose fit' of the jack plug. Totally agreed! A very poor design!

  • hi people of earth!!! i dont have that problem the problem that i have is that when i use my headphone any headphones while using my mac it makes an annoying sound while im using it!! can someone help me on this??????? HELPPPPP!!!

  • Yup... same problem... fuck you apple... this shit is fuckin wit me.... and fuckin up my headphone Jack on my Sennheiser HD-25

  • mine does the same thing

  • im having the same issue, they fixed it but for some reason i feel like it going to happen again. Apple is just failing

  • I recently got my macbook repaired and am now having the same issue. Very annoying, because I use the macbook to listen to music in the train and it sucks that the plug flies out of the macbook when I move my head

  • same problem...

  • I also have this problem with my MacBook Pro. Apple need to cop on and provide support for issues like these

  • Things get ultimately fixed because people (like you) take the time to hyper document. Thanks

  • it took 2 logic board replacements (both covered by apple care) but mines now holding snugly and working fine

  • same here

  • i have had a macbook pro for over a year but thought it was only me with this problem. now that i know it is a common fault (thankyou internet) i am going to kick up shit about it.

  • no one gives a fuck

  • Repair is 1 week and $320

  • I have the same problem. It's infuriating.

  • i have the same problem. It's infuriating.

  • I have problems where i plug it in and nothing happen audio dont change nothing, it like there no plug in, any idea? :/ ??

  • have the same problem after using a cable to a PA. inserted once and ever since the slightest move i make my headphones get disconnected.

hope i get a new one

  • i have the same problem, and they change the logic board on my macbook, but now it happened again, I think the plug that i'm using is too big and it messing up the jack's pins.

  • mine started to cause problems will apple iphones headphones...while it used to work fine for 2 months then problems occurred.

  • yepp. totally true. mine's the same way. :/ oh well. haha

  • I have the same problem

  • I have the same problem >:O

  • @handsanitizerlol Me too :(

  • unfortunately there are different sizes of 3.5 plugs. Mine was too big, so i had to file it down to get it to fit. If you study different 3.5 plugs from different manufacturers you'll maybe notice that some are slightly different. I had to go through quite a few 3.5mm to 1/4 inch adaptors to get one that would play in stereo properly. My sony headphones work perfect, as others do not. luck of the draw? Apple maybe chose a tip ring sleeve spacing that doesnt match many other manufacturers

  • ive got just a regular macbook and my headphones were workin 15 minutes ago and now they wont work... it also has a red light that comes on after a while of putin tha headphones in and out.... its fukin pissin me off... HELP..

  • hahha

  • i have the same problem!!!!!grrrr

  • i know mine does that to i fucking hate it!

  • mine is fucked also..

  • You probably broke then end of another audio plug in the laptop's audio jack. Check out this "So you've broke your plug off into your audio jack?" by rzkesp. That video should be helpful if that is the problem.

So I am having a problem and was wondering if anyone could help... My buddy's mac book audio jack is not working and it doesn't have a audio plug inside, and was working earlier on previous computer session. (It is not the speakers of headphone's I tried they work....)

  • dude i have the same problem and its really annoying wft!

  • yea, on my computer the headphone socked broke. i was wondering if theres an other hole i can put it in (giggity) but realy though... anyone?

  • were you able to find a fix?

  • I got the same problem. Its an extreme pain in the ass if you are a musician. maybe the optimized it to their plugs. stupid, stupid.

  • mine does the exact same thing. it pissis me off every time. apple needs to confront this and come out with something that can make the headphones stay in

  • Yes.. I have this issue with a Belkin PureAV cable on my Unibody 13 inch MBP.. the cable comes out without any sort of force at all.. even moving the computer about half a foot (15cm) disloges the headphone cable.. appalled. My friend's White MacBook does _not_ do this! I am using sellotape to hold the plug in - at some point will get an external USB audio device. For a $1000 computer you would expect more.

    GET IT SORTED, APPLE!

  • well, I use the headphone jack as an audio out to my HDTV (I have an HDMI adapter for the mini display port) and I'm sitting here giggling it all over the place and I'm not losing a connection. Maybe your hotshit headphones have improperly spec'ed 3.5mm jacks and the minimal tolerance is too small, ever think of that? I mean, I notice mine has a little wiggle room with the particular cable I'm using, but it doesn't lose connection at all.

  • @neogeon excuse me, "jiggling" was the term I should've used, I now realize it looks like I said I'm sitting here giggling like a school girl.

  • Though my computer is not a macbook but an Acer Aspire 5515 I to am having an issue with my head phone jack. The sound is working perfectly fine even wtih my usb headset but when you plug in the headphones there is no sound, and we have 3 different types of headphones as well, tried them all. Sorry if this seems irrelevent, but I'm hoping to solve this problem. I don't have a warrenty even if I did it would be expired by now anyway.

  • I have this problem too. Is the a solution besides sending to computer to the lab?

  • This pisses me off almost every single day. I'm glad I'm not the only one... :(

  • Just shove it in. it fits it just has to be jammed in so it clicks (dont use a hammer) ... it slides in easier after awhile. its just tooo tight.

the genius bar listened to my problem, showed me this and acted like i was retarded.. dont let it happen to you

  • Just wanted to say I had this issue with a repaired/replaced logic board and called in to have it replaced again, and they did it, issue persisted with the other new logic board and i called in again and they're giving me a whole new machine, so the reps are incredibly helpful and there to make you happy, just be calm and courteous and things generally go your way.

  • Go into system preferences. Look for a dropdown menu near the bottom that says "audio output" and "audio input"... Toggle back and forth between the two a few times. Your issue is software, not hardware.

  • I encountered exactly the same problem 20 days after I brought my mac aluminum. Problem was I couldn't return it right away coz there was no mac center where I live. When I turned it in they claimed it was the logic card and motherboard? They replaced it coz my mac was still under warranty. AFTER A FEW DAYS I FOUND THAT I WAS ENCOUNTERING THE SAME PROBLEMS OVER AGAIN AFTER WAITING FOR 3 WEEKS FOR THE PARTS TO ARRIVE IN MY COUNTRY!!! WTF!

  • same thing happened to mine! its annoying listening to music...i mean i wanna listen to my spice girls n backstreet boys without all the guys knowing what im listening to but it comes out and plays thru the internal speakers lol jk but seriously annoying problem

  • yea yea .. i got the same problem too .. i had my logic card changed .. & the headphone jack came faulty as urs .. but i had to got back to the costumer service ( morocco /casablanca ) & started to swear (haha that's how u can do it in here .. no policy or manners needed :p 9 .. any way they afirmed it was a fabric error .. i said i dnt give a sh*** i just want my MBP Fixd .. they call up for a new logic card .. & i will be recivin it next week

  • mine does the same, very infuriating - a slight touch or disturbance on the jack plug will divert the sound to the internal speakers. pushing the plug in towards the case will send it back to the headphones. it's almost like there's a tension pushing the plug out of the socket and a tiny touch is enough to lose contact.

  • i plug my headphones into the port and it doesnt play through the headphones, only the speakers, ive tried 3 different headphones still wont play through headphones, only speakers, its pissing me off. How am i going to listen to music during school now.

  • i have the same problem, used to be better but as of yesterday it started to be really sensitive. it used to have a point on it that made it harder to pull the headphones out, i don't know if it bent?

have you found any fixes for this?

  • Just for the record I am having the same problem. I hope apple addresses this. I have a hard time accepting that a) apple would overlook this in product development and b) apple would not take care of this simple hardware fix.

  • i have the same problem, it sucks.

so much for a 1300€ machine...

  • isn't that soooo obnoxious... now mine won't even play out of the speakers... it shines a red light and won't even play through the internal speakers... so frustrating!!! the 3.5s are the most popular size of headphones... and ipods is different and thus so is their headphone jack...

  • i have the same problem with my imac headphone connection. it's currently not working at all!

  • Comment removed

  • Same here mate. Exactly like this guy's. Apple won't recall shit, we got to fix it ourselves... might open it up my mac and figure it out

  • use a toothpick stick it into the jack and hold the stick to the right side for about 5 secs light will go off and have audio to your mac.......same thing happend to me it works

  • Same problem here. I have also had the red light coming out of my headphone jack, although the problem magically disappeared after a few days. Now I also am hearing static from my Mac headphone jack, even if no music is playing. Has anyone had this same problem??

  • happens to mine too, apple's jack are designed for apple's headphones in order for them to fit snuggly.

  • I have this bloody problem to I can't do any of my video because of this even with headphones

  • i had this F***king problem too... I found that inserting the jack then closing the mbp (putting it to sleep) and then returning from sleep mode will "recognize" the headphones

  • don't know why i got a thumbs down... has anyone tried the method I mentioned? it still works for my mbp

  • anyone work out how to fix this yet? had my macbook pro for like a week n now i cant use any headphones!!!

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro 13 ich

and have never had the red light help me pleaes?

  • ME TOOOO ... LOL ... i thought my lap has suffered from my brutal use :P how come it was the manufacturer 's fault, damn, is there anything to fix this !

  • /ME TOOOO

  • its fine stop cying

  • I am original poster of video. I worked my way all the way up to steve jobs (Apple CEO). He told me I was wrong and there isn't a problem. Here's what I think it is. Regular headphone has 2 rubber rings on end. Apple headset with mic has 3. it works fine with 3, not with 2...

  • dude! i have the same problem fucken shitty mac headfone jacs

  • I get this problem too. It's so annoying, if i simply move my mac about on my desk, or brush past the wire, it cuts out. Mass petition to Apple maybe?

  • @080226 Wow how much did you complain to apple lol. A least you got to talk to steve

  • @080226 dude stop bulshitting

  • @080226 I've got the same problem with mine I have a MacBook. It happened ages ago and i googled it, there's a metal connector if you get a pin and poke it and try to push it out it works again (you have to look in the socket to know what im talking about) I've had SO many issues with my MacBook. Super Drive doesn't work it's just all in all a shit computer now. I'm thinking about going down the path you went but i'll keep on harassing 'til somethings done, We're customers that have invested.

  • @080226 Dude...OMG I should have known. It's just like the iPod shuffle (previous generation). Only headphones it works with are the Apple earbuds with the mic.

  • @080226 Are u sure dat ur headphones are not broken?

  • @080226 but i think not all apple headset with mic is compatible with mac..we tried different and it didn't work on some.

  • Darn... Mine just started doing this. I am supposed to talk to a representative from Apple tomorrow... will let you know how it pans out....

  • i have the same problem too. i have a early 2008 macbook pro. wtf

  • yeah wtf is up with that? i stuck the headphones that went to my iphone in there, it took one hell of a shove but i got it in there, i dont get a broken connection at all, but the headphone definitely does not slide in as easily as it does on my iphone and mac mini

  • OCD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have the same problem

i took it to the apple store, they used their Bose headphones and said there was no problem. but even though the Bose ones seemed to click in nicely, it happened to him twice, but he failed to acknowledge it...

  • Exact same problem! How do you fix it?!

  • i had log a complain and manage to change to a new unit (2009 macbook pro w SD card) . if u guys out there have this problem do go to ur apple service provider and show them the problem , because there isnt any help if they change a new logic board .

  • Yup, me too! In one way it's good to know other people are having the same problem, but in other ways, it's not, because if it's not just me, then it requires Apple to acknowledge it as an issue. And from past experience, this might take a while. It's a small enough issue that many will just live with it. But it's annoying - takes the edge off the overall enjoyment ...

  • whats wrong with apple are they frickin insane ?

  • i have the same problem this is bullshit

  • did anyone call apple hotline to log a complain???? because i call today and they told me there is no one ever complain abt this earphone jack issue.... i would like ppl out there who facing this sickening earphone jack problem to apple so that they can settle this small little product problem so that to let the apple user for a better n pleasant user. (macbook pro late 2008)

  • anyone got an idea how to fix this? same here

  • your hands look so big and masculine but toy with the little thing so sensitively. Your shadow puppets need some work though. With your jack, try more than minimal movement, but do not force it all the way in. Rotation is good, but do not lose the connection. Wearing headphones when you are doing this is probably not advisable.

  • Me to buddy just on the phone to Apple support now and i will not take no for an answer if they try not to warrant it.

I can't believe the poor quality of the jack and just how many people are having the issue...

  • i have the same pro with my macbook pro uni 1st batch..... anyone got this fix?????????? sad

  • just got a Macbook Pro 13" on Wednesday.

Same damn problem. Anyone know of any possible solution for this?

  • Same on my MacBook pro but it's not as bad as yours

  • exact same problem with my macbook.

  • Same with my Macbook Pro 15"

  • so much for "it just works" when you buy crapple you don't get what you pay for.

  • yea mine did that as soon as a bought it and I barely use the headphone jack. When i went to use it today it doesnt work at all, not even with apple headphones...piss me off, genius bar tomorrow

  • Macbook 13", same shit here.

  • macbook 2.4ghz

    same deal.

    sooooooo annoying

  • lol same, it's a pain in the ass. Side effects of adopting new aluminum "unibody". Other than that no other issues with the audio headphone jack. Hopefully they fixed it in the new 13", 15" & 17" macbook pro.

  • I have the same exact problem and so does my friend's computer. Anyone know how to fix this and has anyone spoken to Apple about it?

  • same problem.

  • same, exept with an Acer Aspire, not a mac

  • I have the same problem

  • Have you tried other headphones? Maybe the headphones are just faulty

  • i hv same problem

do u no how 2 fix it?

  • Same problem here. I have Sennheiser HD555's and some logitech speakers with a sub, both of these cause the audio to crackle and cut out when I turn the jack around ever so slightly.

Very disappointed that it's not considered a fault, I paid over $5000 for this computer...

  • same problem on my mbp, sooo custy

  • Same problem here. Actually my headphones came out of the jack while I was watching this clip in my office.

  • Same problem here ...the very first time i plugged in apple headphones ..the computer is 2 days old...i will blast them tomorrow. My macbook pro had other audio headphone jack problems...get it right apple..this sucks

  • I too have this problem.

It is seriously annoying - i've got a pair of Shure headphones (£60 so around $100+) and it takes minimal effort to knock them out of the socket. I'm tempted to get a shim to make the jack tighter..

  • is the unibody thickness ...

  • These macbooks have several issues! My head jack is very scratchy/noisy. So many flukey problems no one will admit to.

  • i have this same problem. after spending 1400 bucks to find something like this with my computer, i just want to cry.

  • 本体が不良なんじゃないの?

  • good looking but ordinary hardware.

    so apple...

  • every big name has it problems. Apple too. But it's quite normal. The really important thing is how good is protection plan. Will see.

  • haha yeah thats apple for ya....their products are ALWAYS half baked!

  • what song is that one? is nice

  • use Tunatic. But how people always loves EVERY song on youtube videos? I mean..EVERY TIME lol :)

  • MAC or PC they both are made by money grubbing companies who both have things that will piss u off to no end! You can try to tell MAC users that and they will poke there fingers in there ears and pretend like there is nothing wrong, and PC users are people who just accept the frustrations of a PC and say that its normal. Its sad on both sides IMHO.

  • As most long time Mac users know. Rule #1 NEVER buy a rev. "A" Apple product. The second version is always 100% better. Anyways workarounds: First, try different cables/plugs. Some may fit tighter then others. Second, USB audio solutions. Third, AirPort Express with AirTunes (for music only).

  • It's what you get for buying a crappy Apple. And, of course, Apple denies that there is anything wrong with it. Stupid losers.

  • I have a MacBook since 2007 and from that moment my life is changes. Loves Apple. See you.

  • I'm just going to say... good choice of music... haha Go Jack Johnson

  • This is a serious design flaw, Apple should issue a recall for the computers affected by this and replace the jack with a properly fitting 3.5mm jack. This is just as bad as the crap they pulled on the original iphone. I hope Apple does something about this because the average consumer that paid that much money should not have to put up with flaws like that.

  • Agreed...

Apple's portable devices and/or computers are becoming synonymous with this bullshit.

  • s4rc4stic4, I never claimed to be an apple consumer. I don't own a single apple product for reasons like this. I was merely trying to show this isn't the first time they have pull this same stunt, yet apple consumers go back for more of their crap.

  • The only reason I'm using APPLE headphones is because I got them for free from APPLE after complaining!!!

Don't get me wrong... I'm not rich.. I like quality, which is why by apple... this is my first bad experience with an apple product...

  • Of course it's a fault free design! Try using your gazillion dollar APPLE headhones :)

  • I think it's pretty funny with the hand gestures. I will collect kicks.

  • My video clearly shows a design flaw. Maybe you don't like it, but we don't really need your comments here...

Mac uses some unique technology. They have a headphone port that is capable of 'microphone in' as well as 'headphone out'. When you look at an iPhone headset, or the new Apple in-ear headphones, there are 3 plastic rings on the male end. This is because there is an integrated mic. Normal headphones have 2 rings (check it out). This is why the fit is off. A solution, PLEASE!

  • There a million ways that this could 'not be a fault of the computer engineering design process'. For instance, it could be a manufacturing process problem. Don't use big words you don't understand. Heck, they're not even big words, but you still clearly don't understand them.

Good luck with this issue, I hope you find some satisfactory resolution to it. P.S. $100 is not a lot of money for headphones.

  • Thanks for your valuable input t264test. But, as far as I'm concerned, $100 headphones should work in any headphone port. Obviously you have a bone to pick.. Maybe you're an unemployed engineer?

  • People like to throw terms around like "design flaw" and "known issue" etc, but if they haven't worked in software development or product design, they don't know what these terms mean and will use them inappropriately. These terms have all entered our modern techno-lexicon, but that isn't carte blanche to state things authoritatively as fact that may not be true. If you have a real problem, and I believe you do, that's all the more reason to be precise and correct in order to be taken seriously.

  • Apple neads to test products with real end users. Instead they have internal testers who probably get fired if they find something wrong the engineers don't agree with.

  • This is about tolerances. The powerbook has tight specifications because they stuff so many things in there. The headphones have very loose specs. As someone who has done manufacturing, to make sure it's not to big, you sometimes make things ever so slightly smaller than the speck. There fault is is the headphone 1/8" connector. Purchase a $4 1/8" splitter or extender that is in spec and you will not have the problem.

  • Although this is a serious design flaw, and I have this problem on my Macbook Pro, I found your hand motions rather funny.

  • maybe you find it funny... that's wonderful! If you bought a computer for 2 grand that you couldn't plug headphones into, it might not be so funny.

Go get your kicks elsewhere, dude..

  • @080226 Wait... he *did* buy a computer for 2 grand that he can't plug headphones into, yet he still finds your hand motions funny. And same with me.

  • APPLE, PLEASE FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!

  • I see the problem but why didn't you consider the Philips headphone to be faulty?

I have 3 headphones that are iPod bundle headphone, Apple new in-ear headphone, and Shure E5C, but none of this caused a problem with the new MacBook.

If every headphone with 2 ring collars doesn't work right with the new MacBook, your assertion can be fair but I don't see any of reports say so.

I believe you've got wrong target to blame: Philips is guilty.

  • Try a non Apple brand headphone.

  • I have 5 sets of headphones ranging in price from 19 bucks to $250 they all do it

  • it works only with plugs that have integrated mic. If you look at the plug end, you will see 3 plastic collar rings. Regular headphones with no mic have only 2 ring collars.

Mac needs to issue an adapter for this product, and they need to hear more and more complaints, so contact them and ask to speak to a higher level of customer support.

  • just bought a macbook 2.4ghz and purchased the bose companion 2 speakers from the store. The connector barely fits all the way into the macbook. to get any sound out at all i have to 'tweak' the angle of the speaker plug or rest something heavy on it until i hear sound, but the slightest movement and .... No sound, except for laptop internal speakers. i'm thinking it's a design flaw, but ipod earphones work fine. what's the issue i thought all connectors where relatively equal sized

  • ok download a driver then check it you should look on the website of the company you bought it and if it doesnt work go to the apple store then ask a genius for FREE

  • Mine does the same thing as well.. I hate it. I'm returning it tomorrow!

  • mine does the same thing, i got it repaired and it lasted two weeks and it was broke again.

i agree that it is a design flaw.

if you look in the jack youll see a tiny metal clip/stub in it and this wears down or bends and or brakes off cuasing the problem.
