Had mine taken out 6 days ago. It's not super bad, but I must say that I'm in a LOT of pain every day. The worst are the mornings. I would recommend people to set their alarms throughout the night so they can drink something or take pain meds, because waking up after hours of not drinking is incredibly painful! I haven't had bad bleeding yet thank God! Just a tiny bit of blood in my saliva, but nothing to get worried about. Anyway, good luck to all of you having to undergo this!
@marquez666 i know u thought to yourself this all the ice cream i can eat stuff was bullshit lol i had mine taken out when i was young but it was the worse
@BIGGZMUSICTV You're right! Ice Cream is HORRIBLE! So is cold water. Everything remotely cold is hurting a lot! The best is creamy soup that is cooled down a little bit. I just woke up in crazy pain again. So sick of it!
@marquez666 idk about you but now i cant stand soup that whole ordeal of eating nothing but soup made me sick of it i dont soup now for anything in the world lol
@JEWLZPAG I got mine out last friday im 14 they told me it wasn't going to be bad the first day wasn't because of the anastesia they gave me but day 4-9 has been terrible can barely drink water now and I can't even eat food without a sharp pain the earaches are horrible but they say all people recover diffrent so idk about other people.
Had my tonsils out 2 wks ago. Surgeon said "that was the most blood ive ever seen" ..& considering he's been doing this for YEARS that says something. A week into recovery i woke up with a mouth full of blood (my artery in my throat was hemorrhaging)...terrifying experience. I almost bled to death. I was rushed to the ER, then the OR where they did a second surgery. & Again i lost a lot of blood. I'm so lucky to be alive. So please be prepared for everything. I wish you all the best!
I am a 32 year old male, its been 4 days since i had my tonsils removes also my deviated septum was taken care of. It's not as bad as I thought, then again I was prescribed vicodine, I been taking them as if they were going out of style.
I guess the trick is lots of pain meds. In fact the first day, 6 hours after the surgery I had rice and shrimp for dinner, second day I had a cheeseburger with fries, not that bad! I must say my main fear is sleeping for more then an hour. Specially now since
Im couple yrs older thn u so I wz wundrg f age made a factor.Culdnt find nfo that said f it did r not.Have appt @end of Jan 2 c how, when etc 4 surgery.I appreciate 2 find out hw it went w-u.Thanks!
It Looks Disgusting But I just Show You What Is Going Yo Happen To You I'm Getting Mines Removed Next Thursday And I'm Scared But Relaxed at The Same Time The Best Part Is That You Could Eat A Lot Of Ice-cream......No Joke ^-^ :\
The best advice, which I couldn't follow, is to DRINK WATER. A LOT, as soon as you're done with your surgery and throughout recovery, as much as it will hurt to swallow, drink water. If you don't, the area will get dried out and the pain will be worse, you need to keep the area hydrated.
I got my tonsils out at 18, the recovery was the worst pain I've ever had. It took about two weeks for the pain to finally diminish to a manageable amount - my tonsils were big so it didn't help. The pain will get worse before it gets better - mine reached its peak around day 10. I must say the pain medications were my saviors, they managed to decrease the pain a bit, but they had a better effect by making me sleepy, so I slept as much as I could. If you get pain in your ears, that's normal too.
The pain after surgery was TERRIBLE for me. I am 20. The actual surgery went great, especially because I didn't know it was happening. I was originally getting a minor procedure done to extract infection in a gland or something but it turned out I didn't have that, but my tonsils were in awful condition. I woke up to my mom telling me that I had my tonsils removed. This was a week ago. The pain is terrible and I can't eat. Advice: Take pain meds and eat ice! Day 7: Less pain, but SO hungry.
@snowballs101 The operation went fine actually, woke up in no pain at all, because they had given me lots of morphine. Stayed in hospital one night, without much pain because they kept up the meds. They gave me co-codamol to take home, which worked great until about day 5/6 where the pain was the worst in my jaw, but after that pain levels dropped alot its now day 10 and im taking nothing for pain.
@dropdeadamaziing LOL Thank you! I'm not too nervous. I had my wisdom teeth out so I already know Anesthesia. It's not the surgery that's nerve-wracking; it's the aftermath and pain that will be the bother. Ugh. You can message me on here if you want and let me know how it goes or if you have any questions as to how mine are healing compared to yours or something. But yes, good luck to you, too!
@dropdeadamaziing Do your self a favor and get slushies for the first three days and promise those taking care of you you owe them a fine dinner. The strongest soul suffers so badly as a adult.
its now monday...seven days after surgery and the pain got worse over night can barley swallow and cant take any more liquid pain meds cause they make me real sick.....any tips on how to make the next few days before?
I need to get tat done. I am sick of having tonsilitis. They said I couldn't have them removed unless I had tonsilitis 6 times in a year. I had it 5. -,- I have it once again and i am an agony!
today is Saturday and I had the surgery on monday and Ive been in pain the majority of the time...today was the worst because the liquid hydrocodone and liquid antibiotic started making me very sick on the stomach and I threw up and am very nauseous now still and yea cant eat much of anything cause throat hurts so bad and keep spitting up nasty tasting brown mucus from the bottom of my throat
I had my done 10 days ago, I'm 21 and it was pretty hard. I had some bleedings so my doctors decided that I stay in hospital for as long as it get better, it is harder when you're not a kid, they don't have almoust any problems after it. So I was in hospital for SEVEN days and now I realise it was the best decision cause they were giving me Voltaren inections every 10 hours and I felted almoust no pain.
my advice for everyone older than 15 - make sure you stay in hospital at least for 3-4days
Im on day 5 of recovery, woke up this morning, first thing I notice is my ears feel like there are knifes in them, the back of my throat felt like I swallowed razorblades, horrible. Its now about 45 minutes later I took a pain pill the ear pain is gone and the throat pain is... bad still but not as bad. After my tonsillectomy I was only in recovery for 15 minutes, I woke up little to no loopyness shivered a little for anesthesia, but 10 minutes later I was out of there cause I was doing so good.
@ninjaninja246 it'll suck (really bad) for 2.5 weeks...then things will get better.. had mine done 20 days ago. still a tiny bit of pain (and some of the scab is still there) but I can eat anything now.
@DiSNEYiNSANiTY Well it's hurts the most when you wake up. For me, that pain was a 10. The medicine they gavve me made me hurt even worse though & I took 4 ibuprofen & it helped WAY more than the pain medicine they gave me..
im 28 and got mine out thursday (4 days ago). the first few days were fine! little to no pain, meds were easy to take...no nausea. today...extreme pain, pain meds make me sick to my stomach. I thought I was going to be able to skate through this with little to no pain...nope, this sucks!
@celiracer94 good luck! like i said, first couple days were a breeze, then you'll be hating life for the next week and 1/2. you'll lose quite a bit of weight (i didn't eat any thing for 5 days and lost 14 lbs.) don't rush eating...i did and threw up (worst pain ever!) i lived off apple juice and fruit popsicles for nearly 2 weeks. it's been 20 days now, pain is nearly gone. oh, and off work!! i ended up taking 8 days off! you'll be really weak and loopy from all the meds you'll be taking
I'm 25 years old, and had surgery on Tuesday (6 days ago), and my throat still hurts like the dickens. I've lost 10 lbs and still dropping because I can't stand to eat ANYTHING. Everything feels like sharp knives sliding down my throat. At this point, my husband, cousins, and everyone keep coming over trying to feed me ice cream and jello but I can't stand it. This is the worst kind of pain to go through.
I got mine out last Tuesday and I'm 34. This shit hurts so bad and I'm depressed. I also got a uvalectomy to add to the pain. Fuck eating, Fuck ice cream and Fuck liquids. All that shit hurts. Even med. Is making me nasuaus.
@Devestato72 My grandmother was a hospital matron in Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century. I have one of her nursing books. Under the entry for Tonsillectomy it states - " When these glands are removed a special tonsil guillotine is used ; the patient does not have an anaesthetic ; rest from talking and eating, and ice to suck will be the nursing treatment " OUCH !!!!!
@Waddilove1 i wish i could stop talking. My wife keeps asking me stuff and when i answer she says "huh". I have to keep repeting myself. Everyday friends and family ask are you feeling better? Like i got a simple cold.....geez! Ouch, is right bro
@Jmerino7 you were right, i didnt want to eat anything for 2 weeks, my mom literally forced things down my throat cause the doc told me to keep drinking at least. i lost 10 pounds. happy results but awful pain
The most important thing to remember is that people like share their horror stories, you don't hear a lot about the easy recoveries. I had mine removed a few months ago and ate a ceasar salad the day after surgery. Just keep up with the pain meds and enjoy being lazy!
@Lovelylittlepets Yes, it will hurt - especially as you're coming off the meds. For me (had them removed when I was 13)... I got intense nausea/vomiting, then couldn't eat anything for a couple of weeks afterwards. It's important to remember though that everyone's experiences are different - like @NicoleRosie14's. I'm sure you'll be fine! :D
I had my tonsils out in 2005 when I was 16. I'm not going to lie, it really really hurt. Everyone says you get to eat ice cream and la la la but even ice cream hurts. But, the pain medication they give you is pretty good stuff :P
@jrobyn28 Hi, I'm 20 and had mine removed about 2 months ago.
I had nothing stronger than paracetamol the entire time. Yes it is going to hurt but honestly it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be! The thing i recommend most is to eat, and try to have rough food, i had a lot of granola bars. Not the most pleasant but will help ensure a speedy recovery! i had my first proper meal 2 days later! Hope you get on ok, try not to worry!
@jrobyn28 I'm 16 too and I got mine removed when I was 5:) There really is nothing to worry about. Sure your throat hurts after surgery for a few days, but it's almost negligible. Besides, you get to eat a ton of ice-cream (which, for me, at the time, was a great offer to compensate for my aching throat, lol)
I had my tonsils out 5 days ago. I've cried every single day.. I'm 20 years old, asking to sleep with my parents b/c I can't sleep through the night (pain killers only last 3-4 hrs) I now have a pretty bad cough and the majority of the white stuff from the back of my throat seems to be coming out. I hate having to cough it up..It feels like its choking me. I have to wake up every 3 hrs to eat ice or drink water b/c going a full night without it KILLS! This is the by far the worst experience.
@Shay0291 Can i suggest eating rough food like granola bars or toast? I too am 20 and had mine out 2 months ago. Drinking plenty also helped! Hope you get better soon!
Had mine done last thursday, so im 5 days in. Didn't hurt all too much after, but once I got home I was begging for the pain meds. all ive been eating really is ice cream, noodles, water and gatorade.
on my 7th and 9th day of my tonsillectomy, i bled alot but on the 2nd time it happened i went to the hospital and passed out because i was throwing up and spitting BLOOD . I had an emergency surgery there and got a transfusion because there was so much blood in my stomach. I got my vain that was bleeding corterized which means they burned it because it wouldn't stop bleeding. I was there for 2 days and im 12
I had my surgery on Friday. They took out my tonsils, adenoids, and uvula. Now, I have scabs forming and it hurts more and more everyday. I'll be glad when these scabs go away. =(
I did the surgery a on Monday. When I woke up, i managed to eat. Did not feel any pain at all... Even after when a few days have passed, there is only minimal discomfort... Not bad... The doctors did an excellent job... :)
I had one done on monday (so im on day 3) and im not too bad, I'm eating normally, just have a slight sore throat(obviously) but i'm not dying. just hope it doesnt get worse eeep!
Ugh I had mine out Tuesday and I woke up during the process they were like "she needs more Anastasia!" but I havnt eaten for 3-4 days!! I'm starving an have lost 13 lbs this kills!! And I can't talk like AT ALL I'm soo sore
@KDiamondheadMF thanks, but everything i've read online says at the 3rd day, it's intense and only gets worse.. So, just prepare yourself.. I hope it's not that bad..
@mandirawks Well I'm on the 3rd day now and it's still not that bad, I guess it's different for everyone and I just started eating chicken noodle soup last night, just make sure you drink something constantly it reduces the risk of bleeding and dehydration which of course would increase pain.
I had my tonsillectomy on July 1st. Contrary to most people's comments, I wasn't in alot of pain. I was eating potato mash and mince with gravy 2 hours after I woke up. First week was hard because I wasn't eating properly and grew weak, but it gets better. The one thing i would recommend is to drink ALOT of water - preferably with ice cause it feels nice against the scabs. The only bad pain i had was when the scabs started falling off after a week, but drinking lots of water made it less painfu
Just got home an hour ago from this surgery. Decided to look up the procedure to see what exactly took place. Gross, but months of strep throat symptoms sucked. Surprisingly, I'm not in that much pain. But days 3-6 are suppose to be the worst.
Had mine taken out 6 days ago. It's not super bad, but I must say that I'm in a LOT of pain every day. The worst are the mornings. I had this done about 5 days ago and believe it or not - it's not that bad...
A - your under anaesthetic when it's done and they give you lots of pain killers
AND
B - it's the ear/jaw/throat pain of day 4/5/6 that gets ya where they're scaring over.
But taking pain mess makes it go away so there's no need to be scared...

im 28 and got mine out thursday (4 days ago). the first few days were fine! little to no pain, meds were easy to take...no nausea. today...extreme pain, pain meds make me sick to my stomach. I thought I was going to be able to skate through this with little to no pain...nope, this sucks!
eatmytool1 4 months ago
@eatmytool1
well I'm 27 and planning to do this when my strep throat goes away, but this seems way better than low bleeding method
celiracer94 4 months ago
@celiracer94 good luck! like i said, first couple days were a breeze, then you'll be hating life for the next week and 1/2. you'll lose quite a bit of weight (i didn't eat any thing for 5 days and lost 14 lbs.) don't rush eating...i did and threw up (worst pain ever!) i lived off apple juice and fruit popsicles for nearly 2 weeks. it's been 20 days now, pain is nearly gone. oh, and off work!! i ended up taking 8 days off! you'll be really weak and loopy from all the meds you'll be taking

My wife got this done on tues morn. She's still in pain and her breath can scare away the flies!
er1038 4 months ago
I'm 25 years old, and had surgery on Tuesday (6 days ago), and my throat still hurts like the dickens. I've lost 10 lbs and still dropping because I can't stand to eat ANYTHING. Everything feels like sharp knives sliding down my throat. At this point, my husband, cousins, and everyone keep coming over trying to feed me ice cream and jello but I can't stand it. This is the worst kind of pain to go through.
jessmshaffer 4 months ago
@jessmshaffer what kind of pain is it? Is it just really extreme throat pain? or does it hurt everywhere else too?
dhide14 4 months ago
@jessmshaffer how are you doing now after the surgery?
Writerchic1 2 months ago
I got mine out last Tuesday and I'm 34. This shit hurts so bad and I'm depressed. I also got a uvalectomy to add to the pain. Fuck eating, Fuck ice cream and Fuck liquids. All that shit hurts. Even med. Is making me nasuaus.
Devestato72 4 months ago
@Devestato72 My grandmother was a hospital matron in Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century. I have one of her nursing books. Under the entry for Tonsillectomy it states - " When these glands are removed a special tonsil guillotine is used ; the patient does not have an anaesthetic ; rest from talking and eating, and ice to suck will be the nursing treatment " OUCH !!!!!
Waddilove1 4 months ago
@Waddilove1 i wish i could stop talking. My wife keeps asking me stuff and when i answer she says "huh". I have to keep repeting myself. Everyday friends and family ask are you feeling better? Like i got a simple cold.....geez! Ouch, is right bro

Lovelylittlepets 5 months ago
@Lovelylittlepets
The most important thing to remember is that people like share their horror stories, you don't hear a lot about the easy recoveries. I had mine removed a few months ago and ate a ceasar salad the day after surgery. Just keep up with the pain meds and enjoy being lazy!
Also, neck pillows work wonders!
NicoleRosie14 5 months ago
@Lovelylittlepets Yes, it will hurt - especially as you're coming off the meds. For me (had them removed when I was 13)... I got intense nausea/vomiting, then couldn't eat anything for a couple of weeks afterwards. It's important to remember though that everyone's experiences are different - like @NicoleRosie14's. I'm sure you'll be fine! :D

I had my tonsils out in 2005 when I was 16. I'm not going to lie, it really really hurt. Everyone says you get to eat ice cream and la la la but even ice cream hurts. But, the pain medication they give you is pretty good stuff :P

omfg im 16 and im scared to death from reading these comments i have to get mine removed september 2nd!
jrobyn28 6 months ago
@jrobyn28 Hi, I'm 20 and had mine removed about 2 months ago.
I had nothing stronger than paracetamol the entire time. Yes it is going to hurt but honestly it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be! The thing i recommend most is to eat, and try to have rough food, i had a lot of granola bars. Not the most pleasant but will help ensure a speedy recovery! i had my first proper meal 2 days later! Hope you get on ok, try not to worry!
xxamybaby123xx 6 months ago
@xxamybaby123xx thanks!
jrobyn28 6 months ago
@jrobyn28 I'm 16 too and I got mine removed when I was 5:) There really is nothing to worry about. Sure your throat hurts after surgery for a few days, but it's almost negligible. Besides, you get to eat a ton of ice-cream (which, for me, at the time, was a great offer to compensate for my aching throat, lol)
tigerzZxX 6 months ago
I had my tonsils out 5 days ago. I've cried every single day.. I'm 20 years old, asking to sleep with my parents b/c I can't sleep through the night (pain killers only last 3-4 hrs) I now have a pretty bad cough and the majority of the white stuff from the back of my throat seems to be coming out. I hate having to cough it up..It feels like its choking me. I have to wake up every 3 hrs to eat ice or drink water b/c going a full night without it KILLS! This is the by far the worst experience.
Shay0291 6 months ago
@Shay0291 Can i suggest eating rough food like granola bars or toast? I too am 20 and had mine out 2 months ago. Drinking plenty also helped! Hope you get better soon!

on my 7th and 9th day of my tonsillectomy, i bled alot but on the 2nd time it happened i went to the hospital and passed out because i was throwing up and spitting BLOOD .

@mandirawks I just had mine done yesterday and its not as bad as I thought it would be plus you get good pain meds!!
KDiamondheadMF 7 months ago
@KDiamondheadMF thanks, but everything i've read online says at the 3rd day, it's intense and only gets worse.. So, just prepare yourself.. I hope it's not that bad..
mandirawks 7 months ago
@mandirawks Well I'm on the 3rd day now and it's still not that bad, I guess it's different for everyone and I just started eating chicken noodle soup last night, just make sure you drink something constantly it reduces the risk of bleeding and dehydration which of course would increase pain.
KDiamondheadMF 7 months ago
@KDiamondheadMF I'm really hoping I'm that lucky.
