Surprisingly lucid and interesting. That spontaneity thing is pretty much how I work, and I also work on music first, I don't like to sing either, lyrics struggle through the door later if I'm lucky.
This guy (I am sorry, I don't know who he is) asks VERY GOOD QUESTIONS and Slash is very intelligent and inspires me by the way he answers. Thanks very much, Both of you.
0:45 "I find something, record it & then just start working on different ideas," That's what I usually do. Wonder if he has the problem of... following the muse, ending up w/ about 50 ideas and variants & then, next day, looking back at the stuff & wondering... how the hell to make ONE song out of this mess?!?! I sometimes end up w/ an hr's worth of shit, don't know what to keep, what to throw out.. where the heart of the song is. (Amateur songwriter whose best stuff is a mess on various tapes.)
Luv this... Kinda what I do, I usually reach for my phone & use the recording device on there because songs often come to me when I'm cooking, so it's easy and quick, then I can tweak it later and add or change the lyrics or melody later... Very cool Slash & a many thanks to Guitar Center!!!
Super cool! Love to hear his take on songwriting... I knew he didn't like to sing, but he sure can Rock the guitar!!! And what great songs he writes.... :)
Everyone has different songwriting methods. Different things work for different people. Each of my songs have come to me in different ways. Some spontaneously and some while actively sitting at an instrument trying to write. But I myself actually have yet to right a song that results from jamming with other people. I always found jamming to get tiresome after a while, but I should start trying to jam with other people more often.
So there you go Mr. Rico Blanco, the supposed music Genius of the Philippines....Slash said it should pop out of your head....and not the way you write music, which is using another hit song as basis and re-edit the notes and pass it off as your own original musical composition.
@TheStrugglingArtis You should write lyrics about how hard it is to come up with lyrics.

@marmas58ink this are my rules, some of the can be usefull or not:
1_i keep everything
2_which are the coincidences in the mess i have?something can be glued with a few words
3_the verses or even words i didn´t use i keep them on paper, they will fit in another song
4_if i don´t know where the heart of the song is,is beacause it has many hearts,so i have many potencial songs there.
Hope this helps.Have a nice weekend.
