Great to see someone making a kettle helm look good 8) As one who wears a similar amount of armour (mines mostly splint and coat of plate) I know how hard it is to keep a fight going that long and with such intensity. great job!
fighting with anything that's not steel isn't the same experience, we (and history) calls this kind of fighting SKS - Schwertkampf schwer (could be translated als heavy swordfighting, due to the heavy armor you wear - on the other side there's Blossfechten, which is without any armor)
It's not the same as with steel, but you can really go full force and full speed with relative safety. Practicing in this manner, you'll quickly notice that a real fight is over in a matter of seconds.
The technique could be a lot better. You've had many comments so far, but what I'de like to add is: try more halfsword techniques! Those were especially develloped for (plate)armoured combat.
Personally I prefer sparring with wooden wasters or bamboo shinai.
I liked it very much! but they look like they only look at each others swords not for a way to hit the body, and they hit with the swords as if it was a stick or a baseball, its seem as if theres no blade.
STOP BLOCKING AND ATACK and you dont have a good stand when defending
I agree that aluminium blunts are silly, why bother if your wearing full plate anyway? The techique here is pretty poor until they get into grappling, when it starts to look better.
The problem is A) bad footwork, you should be using you whole body to move the sword and stay stable on your feet.
B)Too much actively blocking or attacking the opponents sword, again with good footwork you can move out of the opponents strike and counter strike without wasting energy and time actually blocking.
a question for all you all there, are you really trying to kill each other, because time and time agian, when I hear so many clanking noises, I can tell, it is just sword"play"
imo, a real fight would end in a instant ( with multiple enemies, you want to kill as fast as you can )
I suppose with a sword of that size you would rely more on your stance and defensive posture then anything else. In accord to what I use (Bokken). I would say try to avoid his hits, but it looks hard enough holding the sword.
The vid is great, guys. Well done and very believeable. Let me just correct the BigDummy again, by pointing out that a blunted sword can easily be made to correct historical weights....even lighter sometimes. No one worth their salt that does this is going to use a frickin' aluminum sword. Period!!!!
Thats funny. The AEMMA http://www.aemma.org/ must not have any members worth their salt, nor Schola St George http://www.scholasaintgeorge.org/links.html etc. etc. Personally I don't use them, but not everyone can afford a top quality blunt of the correct weight, or do you feel that the 5lb weapons "stevie" reports are historically accurate?
Let me be clear though that I applaud "steviegriffin" it's a nice vid and I was only trying to give some constructive criticism. I think it's great you are studying Renaissance fencing. Skallagrimm and I dislike each other which is a different matter.
Also, a few pointers: You aren't staying in your guards, your edge alignment and footwork are off. Try to cut through your guards and keep the blade in a plane when you cut. You are both telegraphing your attacks. When you close to grappling range (as you do several times) you might want to try half-sworing, grappling, disarms and or pommel strikes.
Thats why I ask. Rebated (blunted) swords often weigh considerably more than the real (sharp) thing because there is no edge and often no distal taper. You are handling your swords as if they were extra heavy. Most historical longswords of that era, as you are no doubt aware, wieghed 1-1,5 kg. The aluminum blunts I mentioned are created specifically for WMA / HEMA training and are used by large groups such asthe AEMMA.
Not bad. The form is actually not bad compared to a lot of SCA and LARP stuff you see online, and it looks like you are doing free-form sparring at fairly high speed. Definately a bit more WMA training is in order. Are you using steel blunts and if so, are they heavier than they are supposed to be? You might want to try aluminum. What WMA master or school are you studying?
well we are using "authenic" swords, there was definitely no aluminium used in the 14th century ;) but thanx anyways. our club is called the Soldknechte Compania Carantania, we're from austria, europe. Our training is based on books from ohannes Liechtenauer, , Hans Talhoffer, Codex Wallerstein, i33, and others. our hompage is www.soldknechte.at (sry only german), the hp of our trainer is www.schwertkampf.at.tf we buy our weapons at www.outfit4events.com - they weight about 2,5kg (~5pounds)
It it a nice video. Hopefully in the next couple months I will get a video of me up on here fighting. Of course I have to replace my sword after 4 years of abuse...
Great fight! It's hard to find something of this quality on youtube with the hundreds of 3 second videos of people fighting with plastic swords...
I love the sound of steel clashing....though the guy in full armour had a perfect opening to the chest very early on in the battle, but he didn't take it...
thanks for your comment - Yes the fighting is messy indeed because its a real fight, not a showfight (which certainly would look more like in the movies - even with 50 pounds / 25kgs armour ;) )
the armour is from http://www.outfit4events.com/index.php?main_page=medieval_info&cPath=26_27&products_id=314
really excellent.Where did you learn. Can you look at mine ?

Thanks much!

we're familiar with half-sword techniques as well, problem is that you can easily hurt your opponent with guided stings
by the way - I would like to see serious videos from some other swordfights, but haven't found any so far

one of them was much better but didn't have much power so couldn't win too easy.

I don't know much about medieval sword techniques with full plate, but that looked really like nice, not directed fight

...2,5 Kilo?!

Very nice looking armour. The fighting is pretty messy, but can appreciate how hard it must be to do with style when weighed down by all that armour.
