Didn't even realize that was Etta James 'til this week. I was trying to remember the song and I said to myself I wonder who that woman was and then it hit me.
This track sits in my vinyl collection, and at 23yrs old, is still one of my favourites, in the era when it was cool to feature dancing in vids, nothing cheesey about this...RIP Etta
Jeff was a New York transplant that moved to LA. I remember seeing him back in the 80's when he came home to visit his fam in the Bronx. No one but me recognized him because at that time rappers like Rakim and Kane were the stars.
Whoever left that weak ass comment, I never was into Jef like that. My son (you dumbass) is into old school got dissed by this man. you called me a groupie??? I was laughing my ass off that you even think he got fans LEFT. So, being the dick-rider you are of someone that made no waves whatsoever need to get a clue. We are in 2010 now.
I've heard lots of stories of him being a dick to fans back when he actually had a chance at a career. But he did himself in. If you have a good experience you tell 2 friends. If you have a bad experience you tell 10 friends. It's a simple marketing principle.
@nynteen9deez Its a Song Called "Blow Your Whistle" by Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers..Etta James is actually singing the hook of the original song
Yo man gimmie that typing pad and sit down this was are unseen culture back in L.A when muthafuckers were getting their brains splattered for no good reason. Theirs plenty of untold soldiers that had to pick between their hoods or there dance crews. Some chose the wrong path and some of us chose to dance. R.I.P to all the lost souls.
The thing I really hated about Def Jef was his production. Just like so many other dope (Yeah, I said, "dope!") MC's, Jef was always the victim of lame tracks like this one and "Give It Here". Now "Black To The Future", "Here We Go Again", and "(I Know I Got)" Skillz with Shaquille O'Neal... dem joints was bangin', Son!
The Soul Brothers are still active to this day...Check the Yearbook, they are all over Youtube with new 2008-9 shit...They are on the best dance documentary ever The Suns of James Brown and they are here right now writing this message
Yeah man I'm from the Bay and I remember going to a Def Jef record release party, and I don't know if it was the Soul Brothers but it was some cats in there ripping it. I used to dance too and that shit got me pumped, first time I seen housing. I was fresh out of High School with a fake ID. These Soul brother cats were definitely one of my favorite dance groups. Good shit if you still doing the damn thang stay up. They also ripped on that show Rap Summit i thinkt thats the name.
Its Soul Brother Legendary...I love the Bay so I had to hit you back, Yeah that was us back in the day....Rap Mania was the joint you were talking about, hit me up on my messages so I can send you the Suns of James Brown Documentary
good look'n, u should also check out this bboy documnetary called "WRECKIN SHOP FROM BROOKLYN". both have the same genre and era of bboy styles and is one if the best bboy docs ever.
I couldn't have counted the many of times I played this ill ass song in my Datsun 510. This was and still is tha shit, so so sad for the young hip hop fans of today.
Wow this video is off the chain. My mom is in this video she's shown for 2:51-2:32 seconds with the gold bamboo triangle earings and that lady right next to her is our friend Lidea. "Wow"! look at my mom and my aunt Lidea famous and doing the damn thing. When I met Jeff again recently which was last year that's when I learned that my mom and Lidea was in one of his videos. So cool Jeff you the man.
Tanya is your Mom's??? I was about to say whats up little JAH but I see you BIG JAH now...You use to be the flyist dressing little dude in the hood...Your gear game still on point..This is one of the dancers Legendary What up Big JAH
Well some believe by MC Hammer having 50 dancers on stage and in his videos this had an overkill effect on dancing in Hip Hop back in the 90's. But dancing is making a comeback.
fly ! We have them here at out swap meet in Berkeley !!and any concious book store should carry them 2,I use 2 and still sometimes wear up to 5 at a time !!
Damn, I always loved this track!! How sad is the state of Hip Hop when the 20 year joints are light years ahead of the current sh*t.(With the exception of Em, Kanye, Wu, Outkast, and a few others that actually built on the contribution of True MC's like Jeff.
His lightning syncapated flow was overlooked because he was a West Coast MC, before Snoop blew up in the early 90's. He also produced arguably the greatest Rap track of all time...Boss's "Progress of Elimination".
This track "Droppin Rhymes On Drums" by DEF JEF was well received in Chicago, labeled Hip House. Played on radio B96 and Clubs all over Chicago, def a classic.
try an african american bookstore. many cities have african summer fairs or festivals with goods like that.
by the way, i just found out that the great Eta James is the singer on this track. I had no idea! just found 20 years later after the fact. hahahaha...
this was true hip hop- west coast, east coast, whatever- at it's best... i'm startin' to miss those days... but times do change and what goes around comes around so maybe it's time for this style to come back again?
Even me!, living in Holland Amsterdam.. this was shown on yo mtv raps early 90's and those dancers man!! tooo dope! They gave us dancers a big piece of Hiphop fundamental.. even a big part of house dancing was born out of the dancing those days!
