its so true he was as good if not better then arkle and both pat taffe and the stable apprentice say if hed run in the gold cup in 1966 he wud of beaten arkle and they rode both of them. the other forgotten superhorse of chasing is golden miller 5 gold cups in a row and a grand national still the only horse to win both races in the same year a feat never to be done again. him or flyingbolt never get a mention when theres a best jumps horses ever discussion its daft
@TheDarleyarabian You're 100% right about Golden Miller, it's a myth how he rarely gets a mention, given what he did, but the reason for Flyingbolt getting little or no mention is because before his bout of bruscellosis, his record was 17 wins from 20, and after his bout of bruscellosis his record was 1 win from 14, so some people may look at that and think there's no way he could ever have beaten Arkle, and hence his reputation may have been tarnished by his later career.
@MrAddyginsh yeah your probably rite about flyingbolt was amazing before he got brucelosis tho was unbeaten over fences. still think golden miller was the best for me he broke the record for the national without being asked a question with all his rivals still in with a chance 2 fences from home carrying 12 stone 2 and that record wasnt broken till red rum beat crisp 39 years later carrying 10 stone 5. he was narrowly beaten going for a SIX gold cup in a row he was unbelievable.
I was shocked to see that the Racing Post in 2004 done a survey of the greatest ever horses, and Arkle (predictably) was top of the list, and Flyingbolt got no mention, so it would be an understatement to say he's the forgotten horse. Another thing that I find shcoking too is that Arkle has got some big races named in his honour, yet all Flyingbolt has named in his honour is a novices chase, can't remeber which course it's run at though.
Wonderful to be able to see this. RTE - Irish television - really needs to get its act together and sort out their archives. There are some great Irish Nationals from the early 1970s featuring Gold Cup winners like Lescargot and Glencarrig Lady, not to mention Brown Lads three timer later in the decade, which really do deserve to be seen again. Hope they didn't wipe the tapes. Terrible pity Flyingbolt and Arkle never met what a race that would have been!
I watched Barry Brogan ride Flyingbolt on a foggy January afternoon at Haydock. I never saw anything like it to this day as he stood off at the waterjump in front of the stands and leaped like a kangaroo and winning by a distance. He was a worthy opponent to Arkle no question!
wins the champion chase next day 3rd in the champion hurdle....a few weeks later wins the irish national.........how can you compare the likes of kauto star with these true legends hes just run in a few weeks what k.s runs in a year.
