I really like Riven's graphics compared to Myst. Maybe it's because Riven is sunny, while Myst is foggy. That's my interesting insight, thank you and good night.
Atris made me so mad! Told me to help him, gave NO advice, and then let me float in space ("I am sure my friend can figure out how to leave!") What a douche!
@DeepOKAY2009 Yeah, they didn't make sense of it much. When I played it the first time, I thought it was like listening to Peter Tchaikowsy's so-called "Pathetique" symphony.
I had recorded the musical backgrounds on tape because I loved it and I still do. I sucked at aLl video games including this one, but I spent many great hours on it and it's one of my best memories.
Best game ever. Great music, great story, STILL nice looking (excluding its max resolution being piss poor today), and without exterior aid, extremely mind bending. Espeically that damn sound connection thing. AGUH!
@ElizLeeBeth Same happened to me, I have the 5 disk set of riven, but it doesn't work, although I can get Myst to work.
Try GoG.com (Good old games dot com) They have a bit of older games you can purchase for really cheap, and are fully compatible with the new windows operating systems. Riven was one of them!
Because of how Cyan wanted real-live characters, the first time I've played it and seen the cutscene with Atrus, which was in 2006, made me think that Riven was a movie rather than a game. My thought on the looks of Atrus made me think he's some sort of god.
This brings back soooo many memories. When I was like 6, my grandpa would sit me on his lap and play the game with me and my little brohter shouting out unhelpful hints and tips. It doesn't matter how better the gameplay has improved, they just don't make games like this anymore, that actually challenges your thinking and keeps you up at night thinking of a solution
Scratches was a really good effort I thought at a first person adventure game, not on the level of Riven, but very good none the less, you may wanna take a look.
This was back when no one knew what computer games were going to be like. Before you had all this cookie cutter boilerplate bullshit that the video game industry puts out today. Great games. I really think that they should be re-released taking full advantage of up to date graphics, full 3D environments much more interactive and made available on Xbox, playstation etc.
Hey has anyone ever wondered how old you are by the end of the series? Artus is dead his daughter is old and you must be older than them right? So are you immortal for some reason or is this a plot hole. Either way the entire series was great I was four when me and my mom would play this together.
@TheReddwarff100 I so envy you being able to play this game for the first time! I grew up with the Myst series and Riven was by far my favourite! Enjoy, it's an epic adventure!
@rrrevan Did you not notice "when I was young?" This is when I was 5 or 6, and at that time, dark hallways with creepy music were scary. Also, I don't believe in God, and Earth isn't all green. You disgrace the name of Revan.
I don't care if you were "young" or not....and frankly telling me I disgrace the name revan because you don't believe in god and earth isn't entirely green makes no sense at all.
I'm just worried about you, because when you start acting like a pussy at such a young, you grow up to become a bitch...and I wouldn't want that to happen to you (unless it already has happened)
@rrrevan Talk about being a bitch. You've proven in just 2 comments that you are the ultimate prick. Sorry I wasn't the bravest 5 year old, but atleast I didn't grow up into someone who calls people pussies on the internet. You're a real mood killer.
"Mood killer.." - oh lord, this is worse than I could have imagined. The last time I heard that phrase was when my gf set up a candle lit dinner and I told her I was too busy to drop by her apartment.
Don't worry...I'm going to make a man out of you yet. I won't have you growing a vagina on my watch.

@TechnoPath99 It's all media that's been turned down that path. If you look at the shows that used to be on TV a long time ago, vs now, you'll see how our morals are slipping. For example, I Love Lucy VS Two and a Half Men. In I Love Lucy, Ricky and Lucy didn't share the same bed and the show was watchable by anyone. Now Two and a Half Men, which I'm not saying is a bad show, involves sketchy scenes and strong language. Society as a whole just doesn't care anymore, and you can see it everywhere.
@TrishTheNerd yeah i played through the entire myst 1 and i loved it it took me over a year and after beating it (and seeing how easy it is to beat again) i made a video speedrun in 2min beating it and lots of the comments are "you cheated you looked on yotube" ect. but here is the thing, i can tell you how to get through every single part of the game and i love it. im working on myst 2 now and i have myst 3 waiting, i want to purchacse 4 and 5 to have it
@axisdrummer24 Ah man I don't remember I was so young. :S I'd probably say a couple hours here and there, my family used the computer a lot. I think the hardest part was the puzzles as a kid. I tried to get a copy of the old games, but when I tried to install Myst it played upside-down, so I didn't even bother to get Riven. I tried every trick there was in turning the game right side up, but every time I entered something to turn it around the game crashed. I guess I can only keep my memories.=/
My dad had this game when he was younger, and stored it away in my closet for 15 years. I tried playing myst, but my computer couldnt read winder 98 stuff :< so i played Riven, and holy crap it was something else, especially since this game was so old
Awesome, I never did get to finish this game when I was young and now I just got it to work on Vista 64. Bought the game today at a thrift store for a dollar! lol Now, thanks to all the help online...FINALLY!
it's so weird... People always say LA has the best game/animation companies in the US.. When here in Washington, we have Cian, Nintendo Headquarters, and sucker-punch! Very awesome.
why is Atrus such a pussy?....he always sends the player into these linking books to do all kinds of shit and he offers NO help.....he's the one who started all these problems, shouldnt he at least lend a hand?.....damn...some friend.
@GanjikaAranyaka I always thought that he had to say behind and keep writing to ensure the world of Riven did not collapse while you were still in it.
@cosmiclordofthedance ..idk man..i like the way you think though..imagine if the player wasnt a real person at all but just a character that Atrus wrote into a linking book so that he could control what happens from a safe place...like maybe he just writes what the characters plight is and then he/she just takes on a life of their own...like maybe he created ghen and saveedro but there were loopholes for those characters to do things they shouldnt have done..think of it like setting permissions
@GanjikaAranyaka That's an interesting idea. I've never seen anything about the limits of the art of making linking books so I cant say. We do see animal life in a number of the worlds however so the question is if those animals had to be specifically written into the world. If the answer is yes then if it is possible to create animal life through the books maybe if you were skilled enough you could create what might amount to a sentient being.
@cosmiclordofthedance That would raise a lot of interesting questions as well if it was possible to create sentient life in the linking books. Would these people be able to leave the world they were created in? Would their creator have any control over them after they were created? Would the creation of sentient life have a bunch of moral issues for the D'ni in the way that cloning does for us?
Am I the only one who was slightly scared when the only instructions Atrus gives you are vague references to a linking book that is a prison and you're expected to figure all of that out?
sigh... i have this game... but its messsed up (not scratched though) so the graphics are screwed up, the dialog gets cut off and it lags ALOT. Do i have to mess around with my computer settings or something? (ohh and if it helps its running on an XP)
That's just an excuse by the creators to have the world appear populous when in fact you can't actually have a conversation with anyone (you're only ever spoken to), and in fact all the villagers run away from you.
In Riven, you have to save Atrus' wife cathrine that has been prisoned by Atrus' father Gehn. The only thing you know is that Cathrine is somewhere on the world of Riven, so you walk around freely, exploring stuff until you find clues and so on.
@dragossh08 Thank you so much! I've been trying to get this to work on my Vista like crazy and since you showed me this, I've fallen in love all over again =)
I think I am going wait for Scummvm to make my CDs fully playable again. Until than I'll play Myst in DosBox and use my backup of Riven on PSX since those run on my new computer thanks to emulation that works.
Riven was awesome, me and my mom were hooked on it back on the PSX. Disc 4 was damaged and couldn't continiu, we rushed back to the store to get a new copy :p
Myst is great, i only played Myst III and Myst V(which btw is crap) and im looking for Riven, it looks fun
For the people wandering if Myst runs on Vista, i just got Myst (the first one) to run on Windows 7. Just need to set the compatibility to Win 95 and graphics mode to 256 colors
i was like 8 when i first tried this game. Being 19 now i am still at a complete loss. My brain revolves around fps, and ff games. I just cant grasp it. I spend hours running in circles till i finally notice a button =( thanks for the walkthrough this will surely help
I play a MYST game with my mother every christmas, it has become a tradition. We love Riven - though we have never finished it.
It creeps me out even now. When I was (Yea about 6) I shut my eyes when I thought we were going to be jumped. Re-encountering my fear after all these years.
As I remember, this was ,as far as I know the only ps1 game on 5 discs!

I tried every trick there was in turning the game right side up, but every time I entered something to turn it around the game crashed. I guess I can only keep my memories.=/

I'd love to compose a score to a game like Myst! I'm composing for a French RPG now! Not enough woman composers in the industry!

Myst was a great game but you can tell Cyan were really "in the groove" when they made Riven!

it's so weird...

@GanjikaAranyaka I always thought that he had to say behind and keep writing to ensure the world of Riven did not collapse while you were still in it.
cosmiclordofthedance 1 year ago
@cosmiclordofthedance ..idk man..i like the way you think though..imagine if the player wasnt a real person at all but just a character that Atrus wrote into a linking book so that he could control what happens from a safe place...like maybe he just writes what the characters plight is and then he/she just takes on a life of their own...like maybe he created ghen and saveedro but there were loopholes for those characters to do things they shouldnt have done..think of it like setting permissions
GanjikaAranyaka 1 year ago
@GanjikaAranyaka ....btw i just made all that shit up...its just a theory of mine
GanjikaAranyaka 1 year ago
@GanjikaAranyaka That's an interesting idea. I've never seen anything about the limits of the art of making linking books so I cant say. We do see animal life in a number of the worlds however so the question is if those animals had to be specifically written into the world. If the answer is yes then if it is possible to create animal life through the books maybe if you were skilled enough you could create what might amount to a sentient being.
cosmiclordofthedance 1 year ago
@cosmiclordofthedance That would raise a lot of interesting questions as well if it was possible to create sentient life in the linking books. Would these people be able to leave the world they were created in? Would their creator have any control over them after they were created? Would the creation of sentient life have a bunch of moral issues for the D'ni in the way that cloning does for us?

I'm used to Uru, so this kind of view is completely new for me, but I like it.

Am I the only one who was slightly scared when the only instructions Atrus gives you are vague references to a linking book that is a prison and you're expected to figure all of that out?
youvebeenthunderstru 1 year ago 2
sigh... i have this game... but its messsed up (not scratched though) so the graphics are screwed up, the dialog gets cut off and it lags ALOT. Do i have to mess around with my computer settings or something? (ohh and if it helps its running on an XP)

I think it's a freeking reepy game sespecially when you knock on the hut and the eyes of some chick apear

That's just an excuse by the creators to have the world appear populous when in fact you can't actually have a conversation with anyone (you're only ever spoken to), and in fact all the villagers run away from you.

What is this game about? What do you do?
Commeting 2 years ago
In Riven, you have to save Atrus' wife cathrine that has been prisoned by Atrus' father Gehn. The only thing you know is that Cathrine is somewhere on the world of Riven, so you walk around freely, exploring stuff until you find clues and so on.
hugothenerd 2 years ago
@hugothenerd Ahh thanks! So it's like a 1st person graphic adventure

exacly, and personally, i think this is the best one in the series.

If you're into this type of games, I suggest buying both MYST and Riven from GOG [dot] com. They're cheap, and worth playing.

I think I am going wait for Scummvm to make my CDs fully playable again. Until than I'll play Myst in DosBox and use my backup of Riven on PSX since those run on my new computer thanks to emulation that works.

I play a MYST game with my mother every christmas, it has become a tradition. We love Riven - though we have never finished it.
It creeps me out even now. When I was (Yea about 6) I shut my eyes when I thought we were going to be jumped. Re-encountering my fear after all these years.
Riven is like a dark poetry.
*narcotic laugh*
