  • As I remember, this was ,as far as I know the only ps1 game on 5 discs!

  • this is creepy the way it is but when i was younger i started to get scared shitless

  • Such a masterpiece... actually the word "masterpiece" doesn't nearly get close to the awesomeness of this game.

  • This creeped me out when I was a kid, the music truly is great

  • I wish this game worked on windows 7.

  • SUCH AN AMAZING GAME! it is still my favourite! :D

  • This game creeped the fuck out of me when I was little.

  • I really like Riven's graphics compared to Myst. Maybe it's because Riven is sunny, while Myst is foggy. That's my interesting insight, thank you and good night.

  • The most beautiful and well done of all the Myst series!!!

  • I didn't know english by the time I played Riven. so when the guy falls in the fissure I thought "WTF man all of this to end un dieing in space?!"

  • oh god this game.. is just so..

  • Is this fucking Pop Up Video? Just let the game speak for itself.

  • Atris made me so mad! Told me to help him, gave NO advice, and then let me float in space ("I am sure my friend can figure out how to leave!") What a douche!

  • @DeepOKAY2009 Yeah, they didn't make sense of it much. When I played it the first time, I thought it was like listening to Peter Tchaikowsy's so-called "Pathetique" symphony.

  • This is one of the most detailed and immersive games ever period

  • I had recorded the musical backgrounds on tape because I loved it and I still do. I sucked at aLl video games including this one, but I spent many great hours on it and it's one of my best memories.

  • one of my all time favorite games and my computer wont let me play it :((

  • Those damn random facts are pissing me off. -.-

  • Best game ever. Great music, great story, STILL nice looking (excluding its max resolution being piss poor today), and without exterior aid, extremely mind bending. Espeically that damn sound connection thing. AGUH!

  • Dang, can you redo this in 720p? Easily said, huh?

  • @joetylerdale Just play it yourself ;)

  • @BaconSucks I did a long time ago, I'm too lazy now, maybe tomorrow ;-)

  • greatest game ever. i was 5 years old when my parents bought this game. i grew up with riven, and still playing.

  • to bad the new window 7 computers wont let you play the mist games

  • @ElizLeeBeth What? I play Myst all of the time on Windows 7. Every one of them.

  • @CinJaxon really because my mom said that the newer versian of window 7 cant play the old games

  • @ElizLeeBeth Same happened to me, I have the 5 disk set of riven, but it doesn't work, although I can get Myst to work.

Try GoG.com (Good old games dot com) They have a bit of older games you can purchase for really cheap, and are fully compatible with the new windows operating systems. Riven was one of them!

  • @ElizLeeBeth

I have windows 7 64bit .... I just finished playing URU and I'm now on Riven....works fine for me

  • @ElizLeeBeth

It's spelled Myst but good fail.

  • @ElizLeeBeth Aren't the Steam versions remakes of the originals? It's because Cyan decided to distribute the original Myst games on Steam's website.

  • ...I'm so lost.

  • hardest game eva

  • I still haven't beaten this game since I got it over 13 years ago. Freaking hard game...

  • My dad pauses in his speech like that alot...xD

  • Because of how Cyan wanted real-live characters, the first time I've played it and seen the cutscene with Atrus, which was in 2006, made me think that Riven was a movie rather than a game. My thought on the looks of Atrus made me think he's some sort of god.

  • played this game in 2010, and thougt the grphics where good!

  • @CineAVGNFan Congratulations!!! i'll feed you a cookie

  • This brings back soooo many memories. When I was like 6, my grandpa would sit me on his lap and play the game with me and my little brohter shouting out unhelpful hints and tips. It doesn't matter how better the gameplay has improved, they just don't make games like this anymore, that actually challenges your thinking and keeps you up at night thinking of a solution

  • @animeluver168

Scratches was a really good effort I thought at a first person adventure game, not on the level of Riven, but very good none the less, you may wanna take a look.

  • This was back when no one knew what computer games were going to be like. Before you had all this cookie cutter boilerplate bullshit that the video game industry puts out today. This was back when gameplay would entail you reading a fucking BOOK(S) on the computer screen for hours just to get the backstory. Yeah. Myst and Riven could honestly be categorized as literature.

  • that guy is walking by your cell and then he's like: Oh shit a guy in a cage.

  • I liked Myst and when I heard about this I had to get it

  • There is nothing quite like Riven. There never has been and I doubt there ever will be.

  • @LoStraniero781122 Agreed.

  • can you give me the link to download this game?

  • Great games. I really think that they should be re-released taking full advantage of up to date graphics, full 3D environments much more interactive and made available on Xbox, playstation etc.

  • @JurassicPlank then it would become a shooter lol.

  • love this game,,this was a hard version,,3 was easier,,4 is more hard

  • 5:10 Naww... One of many reasons why I hated this game.

  • @campbpar i love reading the journals!

  • @campbpar but thats why its so interesting and different.

  • intro is epic music ftw

  • Hey has anyone ever wondered how old you are by the end of the series? Artus is dead his daughter is old and you must be older than them right? So are you immortal for some reason or is this a plot hole. Either way the entire series was great I was four when me and my mom would play this together.

  • riven is the best game in the myst series

  • Woah! The stranger must've been working out! Now he can carry a book instead of one page!

  • I've only just started playing Riven.

The intro is just awesome.(Don't skip it ever)

"There's also a chance I might be able to get you back to place that you came from"

It's up there for me with Morrowind.

"Wake up, were here, Why are you shaking? Are you ok? Wake up, stand up, you were dreaming. What's your name?

  • @TheReddwarff100 I so envy you being able to play this game for the first time! I grew up with the Myst series and Riven was by far my favourite! Enjoy, it's an epic adventure!

  • @matt19007

Thanks dude, I've just bought exile from ebay.

Riven is one of the few games I can honestly call a masterpiece.

    It's a work of art.

  • Disk 1 always scared the shit out of me when I was young....

  • @derekgornall Me too man! and I didn't know english at that time! LOL!

  • @derekgornall

Wow........................you must be the biggest pussy on God's green earth. A point and click adventure.....just wow

  • @rrrevan Did you not notice "when I was young?" This is when I was 5 or 6, and at that time, dark hallways with creepy music were scary. Also, I don't believe in God, and Earth isn't all green. You disgrace the name of Revan.

  • @derekgornall

I don't care if you were "young" or not....and frankly telling me I disgrace the name revan because you don't believe in god and earth isn't entirely green makes no sense at all.

I'm just worried about you, because when you start acting like a pussy at such a young, you grow up to become a bitch...and I wouldn't want that to happen to you (unless it already has happened)

  • @rrrevan Talk about being a bitch. You've proven in just 2 comments that you are the ultimate prick. Sorry I wasn't the bravest 5 year old, but atleast I didn't grow up into someone who calls people pussies on the internet. You're a real mood killer.

  • @derekgornall

"Mood killer.." - oh lord, this is worse than I could have imagined. The last time I heard that phrase was when my gf set up a candle lit dinner and I told her I was too busy to drop by her apartment.

Don't worry...I'm going to make a man out of you yet. I won't have you growing a vagina on my watch.

  • @rrrevan Ahaha ok man, I don't know what your deal is but now you're just being funny. So persistent!

  • @rrrevan please stop trying to be an internet tough guy (you sound very stupid), and both of you stfu so ppl can watch this nice video, thanks.

  • @wwww2001

    ...uh..fuck off

  • I LOVED THE GAMES

  • Riven is the best adventure game ever. Monkey Island, compared with Riven, sucks.

  • @LoStraniero781122

Monkey Island was a huge pioneering adventure game.

Just like Elite was to the space combat sim.

These games are like no others and cannot be compared to other games.

  • @TheReddwarff100 Monkey Island 2 is really fun

  • @Toupaz

Monkey Island 2 was my favourite in the monkey island series, A very special game for me.

  • this was one of the first ps1 games i played, was tough for me back then

  • the comments are getting in the way of the scenery. just a bit.

  • wtf man. i totaly mist this part

  • The D'ni believed that there was a Maker who created all of their Ages. Because of my naturalistic worldview, I think that the Maker is imaginary and that if the had D'ni somehow investigated more, they would have learned that there was a natural process involved in the formation of their Ages.

  • 5:49 All because of Rand's religious views? People still think that religion has a monopoly on morality? If so, please watch "True News - Hatred of Atheists." What you find may surprise you.

  • i remember my dad playing it all the time xD might have to myself

  • Love the soundtrack.

  • @TReynard1 Are you sure? I'm pretty sure Marty was involved with the music. I know he didn't do Myst 1 though.

  • Marty O'Donnell from the Halo Series wrote the music to this!

  • You can also press (ctrl + space) to access the menu tab. To quick save, press (ctrl + S). This should work :)

  • please i need an answer. how can I save in this game?

  • @supereuropaa Move your mouse cursor to the most top-left of the screen as you can, then click. A tab bar should appear at the top where you will then select File - > Save as -> "example save name"

  • @supereuropaa put your mouse all the way to the top left of the screen... a menu should appear.... click file, then click save...

  • @supereuropaa did you buy the game off steam ? or do you have the original cd

  • I LOVE this game. I remember me and my dad playing this for ages with no idea what do to.

  • Comment removed

  • I would pay good money to play this in 3D. I played Real Myst, and that was beyond heaven

  • What music is that at the beginning when Atrus starts talking? It's not on the soundtrack. Anyone know where I could find it?

  • hey, just a kind note, misspell at the begining myst, not mist.

i think it is good that he paused like that, i think he was simply acting out Artus as a character, i like that.

  • great WT, thanks!luv myst.

too much subtitle at the beginning though, perhaps it's right to shut that annoying dude up:)

  • i have the 1997 december issue where they review Riven. it recieved a B+

  • Check out my rendition of Myst on strings and oboe!

  • I've played ~100 PC games and this is definitely in my top 5 at least, one of the greats.

  • I never finished this. I always loved it though. Got to the end of the second disc on the ps version. It was amazing for it's time. I love em. ^^

  • What if Atrus gave you weapons and guns into Riven?

  • The BEST adventure game out there.

  • I dont like point and click adventures but this looks fcking awesome! ^^

  • i so totally remember this game on win95..awesome! i think the failure of the Myst franchise, spelled doom to PC gaming...

  • I was better at this game when I was 9 then I am now :(

  • Explain to me why 3:56 - 4:39 has been muted?

  • I remember playing this when I was 10 it was so freakin fun. I miss it.

  • What an incredible and phenomenal game series Myst was! It was without a doubt the most amazing computer game I've ever played. Riven was my favorite of the series, and it took me THREE years to beat the game. This was before the internet was loaded with cheats and the like, and I was only ~12 at the time. I'll never forget the long and deep journey I took every time I sat down to my computer. It was definitely the most realistic gaming experience I've ever had. I wish games today were like this

  • @TrishTheNerd

I want to play RIVEN: THE SEQUEL TO MIST, but I don't have a PC. Is the PS version anywhere near as good?

  • @TrishTheNerd

Well I think you may envy me a little bit, I,ve been playing adventure games for over ten years now, and I really enjoy both styles of adventure games third and first person, for some reason which even I do not fully understand I have never played any of the myst games??????????? I,m going to start playing them tonight, I looked at the first myst and it does look a little dated do you think I should start my journey with myst 2????

  • @TheReddwarff100

Yes you should! it is dated because it was made in 1995 lol But it is still amazing.

  • @TrishTheNerd Games today are filled with gore, language, and sexual content.

  • @TechnoPath99 It's all media that's been turned down that path. If you look at the shows that used to be on TV a long time ago, vs now, you'll see how our morals are slipping. For example, I Love Lucy VS Two and a Half Men. In I Love Lucy, Ricky and Lucy didn't share the same bed and the show was watchable by anyone. Now Two and a Half Men, which I'm not saying is a bad show, involves sketchy scenes and strong language. Society as a whole just doesn't care anymore, and you can see it everywhere.

  • @TrishTheNerd don't forget the farting kid.

  • @TrishTheNerd

It took me 13 years, I win :)

  • @TrishTheNerd yeah i played through the entire myst 1 and i loved it it took me over a year and after beating it (and seeing how easy it is to beat again) i made a video speedrun in 2min beating it and lots of the comments are "you cheated you looked on yotube" ect. but here is the thing, i can tell you how to get through every single part of the game and i love it. im working on myst 2 now and i have myst 3 waiting, i want to purchacse 4 and 5 to have it

  • @TrishTheNerd how much did u play a week though? i beat it in 8 months playing at least 2 hours everyday

  • @axisdrummer24 Ah man I don't remember I was so young. :S I'd probably say a couple hours here and there, my family used the computer a lot. I think the hardest part was the puzzles as a kid. I tried to get a copy of the old games, but when I tried to install Myst it played upside-down, so I didn't even bother to get Riven. I tried every trick there was in turning the game right side up, but every time I entered something to turn it around the game crashed. I guess I can only keep my memories.=/

  • sooo hard in spots...but def. best game in the series

  • i loved this game! i just couldn't pass the final level.. so hard.

  • My dad had this game when he was younger, and stored it away in my closet for 15 years. I tried playing myst, but my computer couldnt read winder 98 stuff :< so i played Riven, and holy crap it was something else, especially since this game was so old

  • is there a site were i can DL this game??

  • @krazykraut86 gog.com I got Myst there, but it DID cost money( 14.00$ I think, Riven might not be threre though)

  • I'd love to compose a score to a game like Myst! I'm composing for a French RPG now! Not enough woman composers in the industry!

  • I live in Mead, WA! lol :)

  • Awesome, I never did get to finish this game when I was young and now I just got it to work on Vista 64. Bought the game today at a thrift store for a dollar! lol Now, thanks to all the help online...FINALLY!

  • Myst was a great game but you can tell Cyan were really "in the groove" when they made Riven!

  • This Game was the best takes me back to when i used to pla it

  • it's so weird... People always say LA has the best game/animation companies in the US.. When here in Washington, we have Cian, Nintendo Headquarters, and sucker-punch! Very awesome.

  • Riven had the best music :)

  • Myst just f-ing rockks =)

  • why is Atrus such a pussy?....he always sends the player into these linking books to do all kinds of shit and he offers NO help.....he's the one who started all these problems, shouldnt he at least lend a hand?.....damn...some friend.

  • Comment removed

  • @GanjikaAranyaka I always thought that he had to say behind and keep writing to ensure the world of Riven did not collapse while you were still in it.

  • @cosmiclordofthedance ..idk man..i like the way you think though..imagine if the player wasnt a real person at all but just a character that Atrus wrote into a linking book so that he could control what happens from a safe place...like maybe he just writes what the characters plight is and then he/she just takes on a life of their own...like maybe he created ghen and saveedro but there were loopholes for those characters to do things they shouldnt have done..think of it like setting permissions

  • @GanjikaAranyaka ....btw i just made all that shit up...its just a theory of mine

  • @GanjikaAranyaka That's an interesting idea. I've never seen anything about the limits of the art of making linking books so I cant say. We do see animal life in a number of the worlds however so the question is if those animals had to be specifically written into the world. If the answer is yes then if it is possible to create animal life through the books maybe if you were skilled enough you could create what might amount to a sentient being.

  • @cosmiclordofthedance That would raise a lot of interesting questions as well if it was possible to create sentient life in the linking books. Would these people be able to leave the world they were created in? Would their creator have any control over them after they were created? Would the creation of sentient life have a bunch of moral issues for the D'ni in the way that cloning does for us?

  • I'm used to Uru, so this kind of view is completely new for me, but I like it.

  • Am I the only one who was slightly scared when the only instructions Atrus gives you are vague references to a linking book that is a prison and you're expected to figure all of that out?

  • sigh... i have this game... but its messsed up (not scratched though) so the graphics are screwed up, the dialog gets cut off and it lags ALOT. Do i have to mess around with my computer settings or something? (ohh and if it helps its running on an XP)

  • Thanks a lot for posting this walkthrough.

  • this is so god damn epic. this is the best sequel ever. i still get chills watching this now, no games have been this good since Riven or Myst.

  • I grew up playing this on windows 95/98 :D

  • Ubisoft is indie? O_o

  • I feel like Im being watched just watching you play this.

  • I think it's a freeking reepy game sespecially when you knock on the hut and the eyes of some chick apear

  • That's just an excuse by the creators to have the world appear populous when in fact you can't actually have a conversation with anyone (you're only ever spoken to), and in fact all the villagers run away from you.

  • i love this game

  • Best soundtrack ever. Robyn Miller is a genius.

  • What is this game about? What do you do?

  • In Riven, you have to save Atrus' wife cathrine that has been prisoned by Atrus' father Gehn. The only thing you know is that Cathrine is somewhere on the world of Riven, so you walk around freely, exploring stuff until you find clues and so on.

  • @hugothenerd Ahh thanks! So it's like a 1st person graphic adventure

  • exacly, and personally, i think this is the best one in the series.

  • If you're into this type of games, I suggest buying both MYST and Riven from GOG [dot] com. They're cheap, and worth playing.

  • @dragossh08 Legacy of Time is a pretty sweet game as well

  • @dragossh08 Thank you so much! I've been trying to get this to work on my Vista like crazy and since you showed me this, I've fallen in love all over again =)

  • I think I am going wait for Scummvm to make my CDs fully playable again. Until than I'll play Myst in DosBox and use my backup of Riven on PSX since those run on my new computer thanks to emulation that works.

    Aberran

  • Riven is so beautiful, and the atmosphere of the place is great. Thanks for the video.

  • Good old days with Riven!

  • Hey! No sound from 3:56 to 4:39... Is it just me?

    Anyways very nice video :D

Thanks for sharing Riven's awesomeness :)

  • That's odd, it seems that every game Atrus' accent changes.

  • COOL

  • Riven was awesome, me and my mom were hooked on it back on the PSX. Disc 4 was damaged and couldn't continiu, we rushed back to the store to get a new copy :p

  • Myst is great, i only played Myst III and Myst V(which btw is crap) and im looking for Riven, it looks fun

For the people wandering if Myst runs on Vista, i just got Myst (the first one) to run on Windows 7. Just need to set the compatibility to Win 95 and graphics mode to 256 colors

  • i was like 8 when i first tried this game. Being 19 now i am still at a complete loss. My brain revolves around fps, and ff games. I just cant grasp it. I spend hours running in circles till i finally notice a button =( thanks for the walkthrough this will surely help

  • I play a MYST game with my mother every christmas, it has become a tradition. We love Riven - though we have never finished it.

It creeps me out even now. When I was (Yea about 6) I shut my eyes when I thought we were going to be jumped. Re-encountering my fear after all these years.

Riven is like a dark poetry.

    *narcotic laugh*

  • I misplaced my copy of Riven...man that is so frustrating! I need to get another copy somehow and play it again. I hope it will run on Vista ok.

  • ugg... i am so frustrated... anyone know how to get this (and MYST masterpiece edition) running without uninstalling Quicktime and blowing up Itunes?

  • Ohh By the way i am running Vista... thanks in advance
